Heliodora and the Early History of Women Astrologers

In episode 402 Demetra George joins the podcast to talk about the recent discovery of the earliest named astrologer from the Hellenistic tradition who was a woman, Heliodora, and the early history of women practitioners of astrology. Heliodora was an astrologer who lived in the city of Terenuthis in Egypt around the 2nd or 3rd century CE. Her tombstone was recently discovered by archeologists, who published a paper in 2021 which noted that she is the earliest known woman in the Greco-Roman tradition that is known by name to have been a practicing astrologer. During the course of the episode we talk about what is known about Heliodora and the location and time period in which she lived, and we also discuss other historical women that may have had some connection with astrology and astronomy. For more information about Demetra see her website: DemetraGeorge.com This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Bibliography   Roger S. Bagnall, Cathy L. Firmicus Maternus’ Mathesis, with Benjamin Dykes

In episode 401 Dr. Benjamin Dykes joins the podcast to talk about his new translation of the astrological work of the 4th century astrologer Firmicus Maternus. Firmicus was a lawyer and astrologer from the 4th century who wrote one of the longest surviving texts on astrology that has survived from antiquity, which is titled Mathesis. Firmicus' work is unique because it was written in Latin, and it preserves a lot of material from earlier Greek sources that did not survive into modern times, such as the works of Asclepius or Nechepso and Petosiris. The text also contains huge amounts of delineation material, where Firmicus explains how to interpret different placements in a person's birth chart. During the course of the interview we discuss Firmicus' life and work, Ben's motivation for translating this book, and some of the interesting features of the Mathesis. You can get a copy of Ben's new translation of Firmicus here: Firmicus Maternus Mathesis This episode is available in both audio and video versions below. Astrology and the Emergence of Artificial Intelligence

In episode 400 astrologers Chris Brennan and Nick Dagan Best talk about the emergence of artificial general intelligence through the lens of astrology, and discuss if and when it may occur. Usually when I reach major milestones every 100 episodes I'll do a retrospective looking back, but this time I wanted to look forward into the future and see if we could predict where some of the trends are headed with artificial intelligence over the next couple of decades. We focus in particular on the question of if researchers will be successful in developing what is called artificial general intelligence, which is like sentient human level intelligence in a machine, and if so when. I've been meaning to do an episode on some of the new trends in AI ever since things started accelerating in December with the release of ChatGPT, and because of that I wanted to document some of the recent developments that have happened since then towards the beginning of this episode, and how they have overlapped with things like Pluto's ingress into Aquarius in March. After that we get into talking about some of the broader philosophical issues that are being discussed surrounding AI in the world today, like AI alignment, and the implications of creating a new sentience species on Earth. Eventually later in the episode we look ahead at some major transits in the future over the next 20 years while Pluto is transiting through Aquarius, and try to anticipate when some of the most important turning points in this technology will take place. This episode builds on a previous episode I did with Kent Bye in December 2021 titled Artificial Intelligence and Astrology. Calculating Astrology Charts by Hand

In episode 396 astrologers Catherine Urban and Patrick Watson join the podcast to discuss calculating astrological charts by hand, without the use of a computer. In the episode we discuss how this is the first generation of astrologers in history who don't need to know how to calculate charts in order to practice astrology, what some of the advantages are of learning how to do it manually, and some related digressions about astrological certification. This isn't a full tutorial on how to calculate charts by hand, but instead it is more of a general discussion about the topic, although we do talk about what books you need in order to calculate charts manually and what each of them does. Hillary Clinton’s Birth Certificate Released

In episode 394 astrologers Chris Brennan, Patrick Watson, and Nick Dagan Best discuss the recent release of Hillary Clinton's birth certificate, and whether it finally lays to rest a longstanding controversy in the astrological community over her true birth time. Hillary Clinton's birth time has been the subject of interest among astrologers since at least the 1990s when she became First Lady of the United States, after her husband Bill Clinton was elected President in 1992. The topic has long had an air of mystery surrounding it though, because there have been multiple conflicting birth times floating around, and much debate among astrologers over what the correct birth chart is for Hillary. The mystery and debates surrounding this issue culminated in 2016 when Hillary ran for President against Donald Trump, and many astrologers based their predictions about the outcome of the election on different proposed times for Clinton, despite the uncertainties surrounding them. Much of this was documented previously in episodes 90, 91, and 93 of The Astrology Podcast, titled 2016 US Presidential Election Birth Data Issues, Hillary Clinton's Birth Time Revisited, and Post-2016 Election Analysis and Reflections. This month some of those questions were finally resolved when Hillary reached a certain age where her birth certificate became a matter of public record, and astrologers obtained an original copy that contains her birth time. The birth certificate was posted on AstroDatabank on March 2, 2023 by data collector Viktor E: https://www.astro.com/astro-databank/Clinton,_Hillary While in some ways the recorded birth time resolves a number of longstanding debates, although it may also raise other questions, as we discuss in the episode.
