95 Youth Development in Sport - Performance Anxiety, Specialization, and the Journey

In this episode, which is a sequel to our original Episode 47 on "Childhood Development in Sport," Matt explores three critical components of development in kids in sport: Performance anxiety Sport specialization The journey through the teenage years, especially around puberty The biggest improvements and performance gains are always going to emerge from overcoming and navigating adversity and challenge. It's all a part of the childhood journey and, as parents and coaches, it's our role to not only set up kids for their best performances, but also develop their longterm love of being active, and provide them opportunity to utilize the lessons that sport provides and apply them to all other areas of their life. 94 Purple Patch Best Of - Highlights of Elite Behavior, Effective Communication, Proper Feedback and Identifying Talent

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday here in the United States, we're taking the week off and featuring a few "Best of" segments from recent episodes. The common themes throughout? Elite behavior, effective communication, proper feedback and identifying talent. The heart of this episode is built upon personal growth and development, so as you listen back to some of these segments, do so with the lens that employing some of these key principles (as both leader and athlete) will establish trust and enable a real coaching relationship to flourish. This look-back is also a must-listen for the coaches (and the business leaders!) This is not only the time for you to assist athletes in season planning and helping them set up the approach for the season, but it is also a time for deep reflection and a postmortem on your own approach. It is only with an ongoing search for growth, improvements, and evolution that you can continue to improve. If your plan is to simply repeat your approach for this year — you are regressing, not growing — no matter what your prior success is.We say evolve or die — and it isn't just for athletes. If you think you have it all figured out, then it is time to retire or go and do something else. Instead, reflect, review, ask for the gift of honest feedback, ask questions, seek advice. It isn't weakness — it is strength.Evolve or die. Copyright 2019 All Rights Reserved

93 Sarah Gott and Sandy Holbrook James

Two Purple Patch athletes, Sandy Holbrook James and Sarah Gott, share their journeys of integrating multisport into their time-starved lives and how they both transformed from recreational athletes to Kona Qualifiers! They get intimate and vulnerable speaking about how they balance their training schedules with respective careers, spouses, children's activities, and family obligations. In the course of working with a 1:1 Purple Patch coach, both have gotten faster, stronger, happier and, ultimately, more relaxed. They literally enjoy the sport more, which, in a seemingly unconventional way, led to a Kona qualification for both this year! This message is empowering for all, but especially for women who struggle with "fitting it all in." Through camps, coaching, and consistency, both Sandy and Sarah have both overcome preconceived notions that they even had of themselves and have used that motivation to succeed in triathlon far beyond what they could've imagined even just a few years ago. Their words of advice will, no doubt, ring true for time-starved and family-oriented athletes everywhere, but especially women nearing that arbitrary "middle-age" mark who may assume their best days are behind. 89 The Pain and the Beauty of Sport

Matt explores the question, 'What Happened?' at this year's IRONMAN World Championships. Performance predictability and all other signs pointed to a magical day on the Big Island for Sarah Piampiano, a fierce competitor who is coming off her best year of almost a decade in professional racing. Unfortunately, the day was far from magical. What lessons did coach and athlete draw from the day, and what lessons can you take from this high-profile example? There are no guarantees in sport, which is what makes it so beautiful and painful at the same time. Copyright 2019 All Rights Reserved

88 Effective Feedback Part 2 - Give, Receive, and Grow in a Shared Mission

In Episode 86, Matt defined Effective Feedback and the context of where it fits into the performance cycle. . In Part 2 of this series on Effective Feedback, we provide the framework, structure, and flow of both giving and receiving effective feedback in real-life scenarios. Feedback is powerful and will elicit a reaction. It can be positive or negative depending on the tone or the environment in which it is delivered. For the Manager or Coach, delivering effective feedback includes an understanding of proper timing, clarity, intention, and delivery of the message. The Receiver or Learner also plays a vital role in the feedback loop. She must be vulnerable, eager to improve, and appreciative of the fact that proper feedback is not an indication of failure. . Ultimately, EFFECTIVE Feedback builds trust and is a chance for growth, a gateway to improvement, and a performance-enhancing tool - IF properly utilized. In this episode, you'll find out how to communicate feedback effectively so that both parties are consistent and confident in their shared mission to evolve and improve. .
