206 Brad Stulberg - Meet Yourself Where You Are (Part 2)

Matt welcomes author, speaker, coach, and podcaster, Brad Stulberg for Part 2 of their discussion around Stulberg's latest book, The Practice of Groundedness Topics include: Meeting yourself where you are and taking realistic action in that current space. (14:20) "It's hard to accept where you're at, but if you don't, you never grow because you'll be starting on a fragile foundation that will break." (16:15) "We all want to grow and be better. It's compounded by the fact that the place where many people go to compare themselves is a bunch of airbrushed bullshit." How to ingrain patience and love of the process to your children. (17:45) "Do what you can to keep it fun and try to mold a growth and process mindset." How to be a "good enough" parent. (27:00) "The 'good enough' parent creates a holding space for the kid to develop and if the kid steps out of that space, nudges them back into it." How to apply the 'good enough' principle to your own goals. (27:30) "Adopting a 'good enough' approach to your own pursuits is, 'How do I create the environment for me to thrive without holding too tightly and also without being too loose?" Insights on solo quest vs. leveraging community in any endeavor. (24:15) "You might lose some specificity, but you gain so much more." This is a conversation for anyone seeking sustainable and successful performance with a long-term healthy lens. 205 Brad Stulberg - Passion, Performance, and The Practice of Groundedness (Part 1)

Matt welcomes author, speaker, coach, and podcaster, Brad Stulberg for a compelling discussion on the nuances of performance and potential pitfalls of "heroic individualism." Stulberg's latest book, The Practice of Groundedness looks deeply at this character trait through many lenses. (30:00) Heroic Individualism is the ongoing game of one-upsmanship against self and others where the goalpost is always 10 yards down the field, and you think you'll eventually arrive and be content, but when you get there you realize you're not." Questions they discuss include: How can you hold on a little more lightly without sacrificing performance? (31:00) "If you truly feel confident and grounded where you are, that opens you up to perform more from a place of freedom and from a place of love." What are some of the pitfalls that have the potential to hold high-performers back? What is the relationship between grit and the courage to switch things up? (34:20) "Grit is a really good tool for some circumstances, and switching is a really good tool for other circumstances. Wisdom is learning what tools to use when." How can distraction benefit or hurt my performance? Why is rigid thinking so limiting? What are your thoughts on a "growth mindset?" (39:25) "When you narrowly look at growth mindset as a finite game tool, it's much less powerful than when you look at it as in infinite game tool." Why should patience be a practiced trait for success? How do I balance the tension of event chasing vs. embracing the journey? This is a conversation for anyone seeking sustainable and successful performance with a long-term lens. (31:45) "The point of our striving should be the striving itself. This is learning to live in the process instead of needing that outcome." Heroic Individualism can certainly take a toll, but these lessons in groundedness will feed your soul and create a healthier, more sustainable model for success. 204 Navigate Out of Illness and Get Back to Training

Athletes will get hit with illness. It is a part of the fabric of the journey of performance. (16:50) "In fact, the truth is, a smart coach will plan for sickness and injuries, no different than a contingency plan when you're making a budget." But how do you emerge from being under the weather in an effective way that will provide minimal downtime? Coach Matt Dixon provides that framework and counsel on managing sickness and emerging back to full-steam ahead. There are no gimmicks, no magic potions, and no quick fixes; just a practical guide to managing and emerging through sickness as a performance enthusiast. First of all, it's important to do your best to prevent major illness from happening by nailing the basics - prioritizing cleanliness, emphasizing good sleep, plenty of hydration, solid nutrition, and managing life stressors. (20:10) "The accumulation of too much stress is going to leave your body with lower defenses." (25:54) "When sickness arises, you ability to positively adapt to a training schedule is - unarguably - severely limited or even eliminated." Knowing this, your goal is to return to the mission as quickly as possible, with minimal interruption. You can't ignore it and plow on because 'that's what your plan said.' Remember, life is not a spreadsheet. You must adapt and navigate because, (28:34)"The key to success is the consistency of effective training." Returning from illness requires patience, pragmatism, and logic, but it also requires a little guidance. In this episode, you'll learn: Depending on the type of symptoms (head vs. chest congestion), when is it ok to train? How long should I rest and do nothing? What is the timeline to return to training? How long should I wait to "hit it hard" and get back on plan? Should I try to make up for lost time? What about supplements and vitamins? If you want to avoid, reduce risk, and defend against illness, start building those healthy habits and an approach that creates physical resilience and a long-term platform of health. 202 Thinking of Doing a Training Camp? Here are Five Components of a Successful Camp Experience

You head off to a beautiful destination with bike, wetsuit, and running shoes packed and ready to go where you will spend multiple days in a lush destination without the distraction of work, family, and other life priorities. You are officially immersed in solid training with days and nights filled with multisport activity, food, and camaraderie. Are you at a classic training camp, or are you having a training experience? Should you return from a camp feeling accomplished, but completely exhausted and overcooked? In fact, What should you look for coming out of this week and how can you judge whether it was a "success" or not? Today, Matt outlines your pathway to a successful training camp experience - one that leaves you feeling invigorated and sets you up for a successful season. He discusses: The difference between a training camp and a training experience or getaway with some buddies The value of a camp and why you should consider attending one to support your training Five components of a successful training camp How to judge the success of the camp, especially as you navigate through your season A training camp doesn't guarantee or produce magic results. It is the successful application of the lessons you learn and implement that produce that magic. Educate and execute. Then come home and implement. That is your pathway to training camp success. 201 Reimagine Your Run to Get the Results You Want

If you are a 'repeat offender' with running niggles and injuries... If you are frustrated with a plateau of results... Or, if perhaps you are simply intimidated by running and believe it just isn't a sport for you, then today's show can change everything - for the good. Matt outlines a clear path to demystify and rewrite your approach to run training that will reduce injury risk, amplify the fun, and forge a path to the results you want. In order to rewrite the narrative around run training, Matt first describes the challenges of the single-sport approach to running, including: High-risk of injury Limited levers to pull if you are sidelined It is tough to nail the BEST value training sessions As a result, many runners slug through their miles with poor form, ever-increasing cost, a miserable attitude, higher trauma, and greater injury risk. No wonder folks become disenchanted and lose confidence in the process. Part two of the episode outline the solution - A Reimagined Multisport Approach to Running: The four components of a successful multisport approach to running Keys to putting the four components into action Be warned: To embrace and adopt this approach will require bravery and the courage to do it differently than the books, go against the grain of common perceptions, and even against the well-meaning voices of your more experienced friends who are likely to poo-poo the approach. This isn't a quick hit. It is going to take patience, but you will improve, enjoy the journey more, and be in a better position to stay healthy. Let's do it, team. Fitness. Is. Broken. Way to start off the new year on a high note, right? It's true, though, and most of us are acutely aware. We are frustrated, challenged, and confused with how best to pursue fitness, performance, and a platform of health. You can ignore the fitness nuts and health gurus - you know the ones – that post the promoted wonderful life that they capture while failing to actually live it? Yeah, those folks. Today's episode will set you up with a solid pathway to success and rewrite the script on how to improve with no quick fixes, voodoo supplements, or fad diets. Matt discusses: What is wrong with the health and fitness market? Why the evangelism and short-term strategies of the fitness industries are actually making us more unhealthy What you need and want, perhaps without realizing, in your journey to health, energy, and improvement The KEY components of what every successful performance/fitness and health program needs for success. When you understand and employ the key components of a successful performer, you won't create a quick fix and you likely won't be in a "before and after" picture for 6 -week abs. But you WILL have: A much better chance of enjoying yourself with a commitment to life A sense of logic, control, understanding around your performance journey More predictable and stable energy Most importantly, you will stick with it and you will thrive. 198 Rest is Action

Successful athletes and performance enthusiasts tend to be intrinsically motivated and the hard work, such as tough training sessions, big miles, or breakthrough days provides instant gratification and validation. It is a massive reward to complete a tough training camp. It feels good to produce your best running splits. You get energized from accomplishing something you may believe improbable. It is why we often say 'Hard work is the easy thing.' Of course, it's not easy, but it is the thing that creates an appreciation of progress, improvement, and confidence-building. So where does recovery fit in, especially if we don't get that feeling of "instant gratification?" Most of us understand the role and importance of recovery, but few are really good at embracing it. In fact, most driven athletes don't even like it because it doesn't always breed confidence - at least in the short term. Today, Matt outlines the importance of recovery and why, believe it or not, REST IS ACTION. What is the role of recovery in your training? What does rest actually accomplish? Why is recovery a long-term investment in your performance? How should you incorporate active rest in your training, especially now in the post-season/holiday break? And, when and how should you re-engage with regular structure? Pulling back from hard work and integrating some easy days is not easy. It is even tougher when you see or hear about your peers or competition out there working hard while you, as they say, laze about. Rest is action. It isn't passive, lazy, or simply designed to recharge the batteries. It takes big-picture planning, pragmatism, and a commitment to the longer-term journey. THIS is why it takes courage. 0:00-03:38 Welcome, Episode Introduction, and a word from our sponsor, Inside Tracker - use code PURPLEPATCHPRO25 for 25% in the InsideTracker Store. 03:38-08:30 Squaddie Update - Exclusive Run Squad and Bike Squad Launching in January to first 50 athletes.
