213 Fueling for the Female Athlete with Kyla Channell and Stevie Lyn Smith

Matt welcomes two powerhouses of nutrition, Kyla Channell and Stevie Lyn Smith, for a deep-dive discussion around nutrition for female athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Both Stevie and Kyla bring with them a wealth of expertise and passion in this particular area of fueling for the female. Stevie Lyn Smith, MS, RDN, CSSD, CDN, is one of the lead dieticians with our partner, InsideTracker. She's an experienced Registered Dietitian, board-certified in Sports Nutrition, with a history of working with both individuals and groups in clinical settings. She is wonderfully skilled in sports nutrition, and weight management, and, through her work at InsideTracker, brings a great backbone of understanding biomarkers as a tool to help people focus and hone in their nutrition needs. Kyla Channell, MS Nutrition & Human Performance, is also the owner and founder of Nutritional Revolution, where she specializes in elite athlete fueling for each unique sport and sex differences between athletes. She is a longtime nutrition partner of Purple Patch and has worked with countless athletes of all levels from beginner to pro. For decades, everything in female athletics has seemed to be a diluted version of approaches and research studies applied to men. Everything from equipment, gear, training, and nutrition has been conducted through the lens of male-dominated research - "Shrink it and pink it," as you might call it. Fortunately, times are changing, and the gap in gendered research is narrowing. In today's discussion, we hope to shed light on the differences between male and female fueling needs and provide actionable steps to improve performance across work, sport, and life. Episode Timestamps 0:00-010:50 Introduction and Matt's Personal Picks Dig into Purple Patch Blog - Lessons from the Pros Huberman Labs Podcast Purple Patch Website and Newsletter 10:50- The Meat and Potatoes - Fueling for the Female Athlete and Fitness Enthusiast Matt, Kyla, and Stevie provide guidance on: A break of the three macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrate) and their role in your health, sport, and life performance Why protein is so important for female athletes When it comes to protein, we do know that during that high hormone phase, the luteal phase between ovulation and the first day of bleeding, there is an increased protein oxidation, so more potentially muscle tissue broken down or utilized during sport. Best sources for protein uptake Great sources of Leucine do include dairy products so that could be your cottage cheese, it might be milk, orGreek yogurt. Whey protein based powders are also very rich in leucine. There are some plant based protein powders and things like that out there that will are doing a better job at getting some higher leucine content in them as well. Consequences of poor protein intake A lot of times athletes want to improve body composition, and they're not going to be able to do that very well if protein is really low. They might be in a caloric deficit at the end of the day, but they're not supporting their lean muscle tissue, which is obviously a big player in our resting metabolic rate. Protein and other nutrient timing in relation to training Why women should stop fearing carbohydrates If you're doing high intensity training, your body really should have some carbs on board. If you're doing these long distance rides or races, if you want to prevent hitting the wall or that bonk, you need to make sure you have adequate glycogen stores or carbohydrates stored within your muscle and delaying that fatigue. How women use carbs differently in perimenopause Pitfalls of carb restriction via keto or paleo diets for female athletes Why women (especially peri-and-post menopausal) require strength training As we age, we do require a greater external stimuli to get muscle protein synthesis or muscle building because we don't have that anabolic estrogen as prominent as it was when we were younger. Hydration needs How you can measure and assess your habits and health habits - including avoiding the common pitfall of under-fueling relative to your training demands. RED-S. The under-eating relative to training demands. Much of the time this is accidental but results in serious performance and health implications. If we don't have enough energy coming in, the body is going to adapt one way or another and it could be menstrual cycle related. It could be bone density. I think, too, with under fueling, there can be some issues with lipid markers. Purple Patch and Episode Resources This episode is sponsored by our collaboration with INSIDE TRACKER. 212 The Impact of Pain on Your Performance with Dr. Tim Deer

As an endurance athlete, it's not uncommon to experience niggles in training and racing - tightness, numbness, discomfort, lack of mobility, and - yes - pain. But, is all pain bad? Does it always mean something is wrong? Pain is an important positive sign to highlight issues that are going on with your body, and there isn't anyone that knows more about pain than Dr. Tim Deer, President and CEO of The Spine & Nerve Centers in Charleston, West Virginia and Chairman and Founder of The American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN). In addition to being a world-renowned physician and researcher, Dr. Tim Deer is also an accomplished endurance athlete with multiple IRONMANS and Ultras under his belt, including Badwater 135, IRONMAN World Championships, the Leadville 100, the Boston Marathon, and more.  Matt and Tim go head-to-toe on the subject of body pain, how to spot key red flags, and what to do to prevent and manage your symptoms. This interview goes well beyond simple injury prevention education. You'll learn: Why do humans experience pain? What is the role of pain in the body? Pain originally was part of the story of humankind as a warning sign to tell us we're getting too hot, too cold, too sharp, you know too, too much trauma to your body. So pain actually in its basic senses is a good thing. It tells us something's going on. - Dr. Tim Deer What is actually happening when we experience pain? When you have pain, if it's coming from the peripheral nervous system, which is a nervous system in your joints in your spine... It'll actually be in a activation of different fibers of nerve that goes back to an area of your spinal cord called the dorsal root ganglion into the spinal cord, and then synapses up to your brain into the thalamus and into the other areas that really have pain perception. So pain is a physiological event. What is the difference between acute, chronic and intermittent pain? How do you know (Is there a guide?) if you should push through your pain? Identifying common pain areas in your body - neck, shoulders, elbows, hips The potential culprits of some of these pain points - bike fit, position, physiology, form, impact, trauma, etc: Potential treatment protocols based on the severity of the injury Discerning valid vs. voodoo treatment protocols? Suggestions on how to maintain stress on the body while recovering from injuries Developing a smart and proper mindset when dealing with pain Self-care and at-home treatment protocols to alleviate, manage, and diminish pain Pain isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if not managed with care and pragmatism, it can be a showstopper. Don't try to suppress, ignore, or beat it...Your role with pain?  Shift that relationship as a signal that you're doing something special. Pain can be one of your biggest teachers. 210 TRI Squad - Bringing Life to Athletes, and Athletes to Life

The last two years have been turbulent and full of forced change. What was normal, suddenly wasn’t and, whether we liked it or not, almost all of us had to evolve and change. We also know that by listening to these podcasts and following Purple Patch, you want to thrive and amplify your performance in your health, work, and life - all while getting faster. It sounds too good to be true, but is it? At Purple Patch, we think not. We are your tent-peg in the perpetual storm of change; a grounding of structured training that has helped many stabilize and maintain a path of health, perspective, and progression. How? Through Tri Squad. Today, Matt revisits the history of Tri Squad, The Why Behind the Programming, and, of course, the results. The Outcomes - both across athletic results, as well as energy, confidence, balance, and presence What is Tri Squad trying to solve and achieve for the time-starved athlete? What does Tri Squad offer, and what role does the Purple Patch team play? By answering these questions, we could begin to design dynamic programming. We knew what we wanted to achieve and solve - and for WHO. We also could appreciate the key elements and strengths that we could bring to the table. This provided CLARITY around the program and that is how the Tri Squad principles started to emerge. The program must be highly flexible (or dynamic as we say) and achievable for even the busiest athletes. It is important to empower the athlete to become autonomous within a network of support. Athletes must be a part of a like-minded community but also secure in the fact they are on the right journey for them. Education and real coaching must be central to the program for success. The program is designed for longevity and long-term performance. The sporting results are great, but the life outcomes are the biggest stories. You don’t have the be chasing qualifications or podiums to draw these biggest benefits. You just have to show up and do your part. Rest assured, we'll deliver the right training and education with the tools for you to integrate into life. Your role? Commit to the journey and embrace the bigger picture. Don’t quit when things get tough. Remember - life and performance is not linear and isn’t easy, but it is essential if you want to thrive. Join us.  Episode Timestamps 0:00-04:45 Squaddie Update - Purple Patch Napa Camp -May 18-22. We have TWO open spots. 208 Develop an IRON Mindset for Work and Life

They say sport is a metaphor for life, so today we apply those lessons of IRONMAN athletes to build a pathway for predictable performance in work and in life. Realize, you don’t need to be an athlete – or even an IRONMAN – to draw the lessons and strategies to apply to your own life. If you want to show up, excel, and thrive, then this is for you. The best IRONMAN athletes develop an IRON MINDSET, but so does anyone chasing high sustainable performance individually or across teams. Today, we build your toolbox of success and lean into an IRON Mindset. You'll discover: The Definition of an IRON Mindset? "A way of being and doing that enhances their performance predictability and sets them up to be highly adaptable in all areas of life, remain focused, and resistant to fragility." The Inescapable Truths about High Performance There is no easy option. The fragile will wilt and the uncommitted will fall away. But, before you panic, if you remain in the game, carve out consistency, and refuse to falter when adversity does strike, you will emerge. The result will be massively satisfying, and the most valuable aspect will be the lessons and experiences of the journey. The Key Elements of an IRON Mindset Defining Your Purpose Taking Assessment Define Your Focus and Craft Your Plan Patience Planning for Obstacles The most successful folks in life are adaptable, especially in the IRONMAN journey. No matter how good your planning, expect the unexpected and realize that serious setbacks, distractions, and roadblocks are inevitable. They are going to happen. Adopting an IRON Mindset isn’t some magical secret recipe that makes life and work performance easy, harmonious, and utopian. On the contrary, nothing worthwhile comes without commitment, hard work, and challenge. This is not about perfection. Developing an IRON Mindset is about creating sustainable performance across work and life. 205 Brad Stulberg - Passion, Performance, and The Practice of Groundedness (Part 1)

Matt welcomes author, speaker, coach, and podcaster, Brad Stulberg for a compelling discussion on the nuances of performance and potential pitfalls of "heroic individualism." Stulberg's latest book, The Practice of Groundedness looks deeply at this character trait through many lenses. (30:00) Heroic Individualism is the ongoing game of one-upsmanship against self and others where the goalpost is always 10 yards down the field, and you think you’ll eventually arrive and be content, but when you get there you realize you’re not.” Questions they discuss include: How can you hold on a little more lightly without sacrificing performance? (31:00) "If you truly feel confident and grounded where you are, that opens you up to perform more from a place of freedom and from a place of love." What are some of the pitfalls that have the potential to hold high-performers back? What is the relationship between grit and the courage to switch things up? (34:20) “Grit is a really good tool for some circumstances, and switching is a really good tool for other circumstances. Wisdom is learning what tools to use when.” How can distraction benefit or hurt my performance? Why is rigid thinking so limiting? What are your thoughts on a "growth mindset?" (39:25) “When you narrowly look at growth mindset as a finite game tool, it’s much less powerful than when you look at it as in infinite game tool." Why should patience be a practiced trait for success? How do I balance the tension of event chasing vs. embracing the journey? This is a conversation for anyone seeking sustainable and successful performance with a long-term lens. (31:45) "The point of our striving should be the striving itself. This is learning to live in the process instead of needing that outcome." Heroic Individualism can certainly take a toll, but these lessons in groundedness will feed your soul and create a healthier, more sustainable model for success.
