Ep 167: The Cost of Control, Finding Freedom, and Building Stronger Relationships with Sharon Hodde Miller

Are you gripping the reins too tightly? Have you ever felt the need to control every aspect of your life, only to realize that control is just an illusion?Today I speak to Sharon Hodde Miller, Pastor, Speaker, Author, and PhD about the often-unacknowledged desire for control. Together, we explore the seductive nature of control, how it often creates illusions of security, and the hidden costs of clinging to it.Some takeaways from our conversation are: Control is an Illusion: We might think we have more control than we actually do, but true control is often fleeting. Exploring the limitations of our influence can be a liberating step. Surrender & Agency: Letting go of control doesn't mean giving up agency. It’s about finding the sweet spot between healthy boundaries and trust, recognizing that relinquishing control can lead to greater peace and flexibility. Cost of Control: Clinging to control can manifest in anxiety, stress, and unhealthy relationships. Sharon highlights the benefits of surrendering control and embracing the power of trust in fostering healthy connections. We also discuss the theological and cultural roots of our obsession with control. Sharon offers practical advice for exercising agency instead of constant control. She also challenges us to embrace the benefits of surrendering control in our personal lives and relationships.Let us know how you are letting go of control by tagging us at @sharonhmiller and me @biancaolthoff.XO,BRESOURCES/LINKSGuestSharon Hodde MillerBook: The Cost of Control: Why We Crave It, the Anxiety It Gives Us, and the Real Power God PromisesQuoteThe most free we ever were was not in the absence of boundaries, but because of them.Takeaways Control promises security and peace, but it ultimately betrays us, causing anxiety, complexity, and division. The desire for control has theological roots in the story of Adam and Eve and cultural roots in a society that constantly promises control. Letting go of control is important because it costs us more than it gains us. Instead of control, God gives us agency and influence to exercise within the boundaries He has set. Restoring boundaries, such as limiting phone usage, can help us exercise agency and let go of control. Surrendering control can strengthen relationships and build trust. ⋇Convoy of Hope - Empowering Women and Girls Together Donate here⋇Bianca’s new book Grit Don't Quit: Developing Resilience And Faith When Giving Up Isn't An Option⋇The Grit Don’t Quit Bible Study is now available.⋇So grateful to our sponsors! This episode is sponsored by Dwell! Ep 165: Conquering The Critic Within, Speaking Truth With Confidence, and Using Insecurity as Fuel with Bianca Juarez Olthoff

Have you ever had feelings of insecurity and inadequacy? Ever felt like an imposter when surrounded by big names?Friends, today I get real about feeling like a fraud. That’s why I delve into the concept of imposter syndrome and that nagging inner voice that questions our abilities and worthiness. Some of the insights that I want you to walk away with are how to: Overcome insecurity and use it as a tool for growth Recognize your inner saboteur and challenge its negativity Use feelings of insecurity as a springboard for action, not self-deprecation I’ve had to battle with self-doubt and the voices in my head that whisper I’m not good enough. I want us to use self-doubt as a tool for growth, not a weapon of self-destruction. Ask yourself ‘If not me, then who? If not now, then when?’Unleash your Godfidence to find your voice; The world needs your message! Let us know how you are taming your inner saboteur by tagging me @biancaolthoff.XO,BRESOURCES/LINKSQuoteThe beauty of that voice of insecurity is an earnest recognition that I'm not everything. But the dark side of that voice is when we let that voice convince us that we're nothing.Takeaways Imposter syndrome is common and can make us doubt our abilities and feel like frauds. The voice of insecurity can be used as a tool for self-reflection and growth. Humility is a choice and allows us to recognize our limitations while still using our gifts. We should remind ourselves that we are called to fulfill a purpose and use our voices. Asking 'If not me, then who? If not now, then when?' can help overcome self-doubt and take action.
