Kerry Mead: It wasn’t depression, it was ADHD

Episode 21 with Kerry Mead."It's almost like you attract other neurodiverse people to you when you are neurodiverse."Kerry is a music obsessive, book obsessive social butterfly and escaper of responsibilities. Kerry is a full-time single parent and registered carer to her oldest child who is autistic. When she isn’t busy with all of that Kerry is a writer and music editor. She writes about parenting and neurodiversity, politics, relationships, and all the other stuff too.I reached out to Kerry after stumbling upon a really powerful essay she wrote for The Everyday magazine in the UK. The article was entitled “I Don’t Have Depression, I Have Attention Deficit Disorder: The Frequent Misdiagnosis of Womxn”I was really struck by the piece, I so related to her experience, especially as a woman who was misdiagnosed with chronic depression and anxiety for more than 20 years prior to my own ADHD diagnosis. We talk about being mothers and the struggles we’ve faced with domestic duties and guilt and feelings of being a failure. Kerry has a son with autism and a daughter with ADHD, and we talk about how easy it is for mothers to put the work in when it comes to our kids, but not necessarily for ourselves.Kerry is also from the UK and we talk a bit about the National Health Service (NHS) and some of the current hurdles to getting a diagnosis right now, the wait list can be years for some people.Website: Kerrymead.netTwitter: @Kerry_689 - - - - -Finally ... you've found your people! Maaya Hitomi: The spectrum of neurodivergent experiences

Episode 20 with Maaya Hitomi."If there is anything that defies labels more than autism, I don't know what that is."Maaya is an ADHD Coach and Academic Strategist who supports ADHD, autistic, and otherwise neurodivergent clients to build strategies for better coping. In Maaya’s coaching and consulting practice Structured Success, she builds upon her Master’s training in Psychology, her experience as a coach, and her lived experience as a neurodivergent person. Being ADHD, autistic, and dyslexic herself, Maaya credits her own academic and professional success to the coping strategies that she learned along the way. Focusing on collaboratively building the individualized coping strategies to support her clients, Maaya helps her clients make the healthier thing to do the easiest thing to do.Maaya is my first guest who was actually assigned male at birth, and we talk about her journey over the years to finally get a diagnosis, as well as differences between the internalized experiences and externalized experiences of ADHD across race and gender lines. We also talk about the importance of recognizing and honoring the vast spectrum of neurodiverse identities. I want to thank Maaya especially for her patience with me during this interview — I feel like I learned so much about terminology and identity. I also learned exactly why we no longer hear about or use the term Asbergers.Structured Success CAMP ADHD videoWebsite: Structured SuccessInstagram: @structuredsucc - - - - -Finally ... you've found your people! Annabel Louise Walker: Immaturity and working with neurodiverse children

Episode 19 with Annabel Louise Walker."I don't view it as a deficit; I view it as a difference. I believe it's difficult, but only because we live in a neurotypical world."Annabel was diagnosed with ADHD during lockdown, and since then she has made it her mission to inspire other ADHDers to see the positives of living with a ‘galaxy brain’ and to educate people about what it is like living with ADHD. She runs her own tutoring and coaching business, helping many children with ADHD and dyslexia, and has always been an avid amateur writer and artist. Soon after her diagnosis, she even wrote a children’s book about ADHD called “Hadie & Adah,” in which she highlights the positives of ADHD for kids.We talk about what chronic immaturity looks like in girls and women with ADHD (because a lot of us share this trait) — and we also talk about emphasizing the positives, as well as the benefits of dancing, chocolate and cheese.Annabel has a lot of energy, so sit back, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride!Website: ADHD GalaxyInstagram: @adhdgalaxy - - - - -Finally ... you've found your people! Taucha Post: Yoga and Post-it® Notes

Episode 18 with Taucha Post."Whenever my boss asked to see me in his office, I would think, ‘That's it. I'm done. I've been found out. Better pack up my desk.’"Taucha is a certified yoga teacher and registered speech therapist who teaches yoga to empower fellow ADHDers through breath, movement, and the occasional f-bomb. Taucha was diagnosed 3 years ago at the of 31, after listening to an episode of The Current on ADHD symptoms in women. Since then she has spent a lot of time figuring out what the heck that means to her.Because we’re both instructors, we do talk a LOT about yoga and the philosophies behind the practice and why they’re so beneficial to ADHD brains. But we also dissect the differences between your public persona and your private persona when you have ADHD, and the sheer exhaustion of keeping up appearances of normalcy and competence when deep down you feel like a hot mess and a terrible person.Website: ADHDyoga.ca Instagram: @adhd.yoga   - - - - -Finally ... you've found your people! Yakini Pierce: ADHD families and cultivating positivity

Episode 16 with Yakini Pierce."I don't know if ADHD is connected to being an empath, but I just feel people. I feel their happiness, I feel their pain."Yakini is a mom with ADHD who has two children, both with ADHD. She has an MBA and degrees in engineering and mass communications, but her strong passion is advocating for parents that have children with ADHD, parents and adults in general that have ADHD through her ADHD Love platform. It was through advocating on her kids’ behalf that Yakini began to realize that she personally identified with a lot of their ADHD traits — both in her childhood and in adulthood — and ultimately she sought a diagnosis for herself.Yakini also noticed that some of the online ADHD parenting communities she had joined were rife with stigma and negativity and even shame about their kids diagnoses, so she set out to foster a more positive, warm and empathetic community for parents with ADHD and parents of kids with ADHD. We also talk about how many of the smartest, most thoughtful and perceptive voices in the front lines of the ADHD community belong to Black women!Website: ADHD Love 2020Instagram: @adhdlove2020 - - - - -Finally ... you've found your people! Elizabeth Brink: Growing up with ADHD

Episode 14 with Elizabeth Brink.“It’s a lifelong process of seeing yourself in the past — even from just last week — and realizing, 'Yeah, that was the ADHD.’"Elizabeth is an ADHD coach who helps women with ADHD get unstuck. Her clients are building skills to live with less shame while managing ALL the things of life, work, and family. She’s also trained and mentored by some of the ADHD coaching greats: Nancy Ratey, Linda Roggli, and Denslow Brown.Elizabeth lives Kansas City, MO, with her husband and two young children. You can find Coach Elizabeth online at Thriving Sister Coaching and supporting women with ADHD in The ADHD Enclave.Elizabeth was diagnosed in 4th grade at age 9, and she’s my first guest who was diagnosed in childhood. That said, her experience as an adult is similar to many of the other women I’ve interviewed because the diagnosis did not mean much and was kind of forgotten until she reached her 30s, and especially later when she became a mother. We talk a lot about motherhood and how much women with ADHD struggle through the baby and toddler years and why that is — from the overwhelming responsibilities and lack of structure to the sheer noise and chaos of those little creatures.Website: Thriving Sister CoachingInstagram: @coachelizabethbrink - - - - -Finally ... you've found your people! Emily Prokop: Analysis paralysis and intermittent fasting

Episode 13 with Emily Prokop."I absolutely love my hyper focus as long as I can harness it."Emily is a speaker, author, podcaster, and journalist. She’s been podcasting since 2015 and a podcast listener even longer. She has two podcasts: The Story Behind, which was nominated for a Webby Award in 2019 and has since turned into a best-selling book, and Hate to Weight where she and her cohost discuss their weight loss journeys together. In addition to all this, Emily became a podcast editor and consultant in 2017, and helps podcasters start their shows and continue podcasting. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, two kids, and two cats.Emily was diagnosed 7 years ago at the age of 30, and we talk about the symptoms she had as a girl that went unnoticed. We also talk about the tendency to “over study” which leads to analysis paralysis, as well as the importance of structures and systems to harness all those idea gnats that are constantly buzzing around your head.Emily shares how she got into podcasting (spoiler alert: it was a hyperfocus) and it will come as no surprise that most podcasters she has encountered and worked with also have ADHD.TRIGGER WARNING: We talk about her weight loss journey, intermittent fasting, and scale numbers are mentioned. Alejandra Kottke: Impulsivity and the importance of sunshine for the ADHD brain

Episode 12 with Alejandra Kottke.“You buy all the ingredients to make spaghetti and you come home and you realize you don't have the pots and pans to make it. You need to make sure that you have the pots and pans before you can go to the grocery store and buy all the ingredients!"Alejandra lives in Northern Illinois with her husband and their 4 sons. Her brick and mortar tanning business closed in 2020 thanks to COVID and she pivoted to working one-on-one with clients as a master certified spray tan artist.Alejandra has only been diagnosed a couple of months when we spoke, and so much of her inner journey since then is SO relatable, so if you’ve just been diagnosed hold onto your pants because you’re really going to relate to this interview SO much — she has a real gift for articulating the emotional roller coaster we all ride after discovering we have ADHD.We also talk about how she got into the business of tanning and how, since sunlight is supposed to be very helpful for the ADHD brain, it kinda makes sense that she really loved tanning. This leads to us talking about impulsivity, starting a business on a whim, following our guts, the logic behind why people with ADHD are chronic procrastinators and why we thrive with strict deadlines — so, lots of great insights into entrepreneurship and the highs and lows of starting a business when you have ADHD.I’ve discussed Jessi Romero’s ADHD Female Entrepreneurs Facebook group with past guests, and I always forget to include a link in the show notes, but I’ve finally done it this week.
