Plus this week photographer Aaron Turner takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ Aaron Turner was born in 1990 and is a photographer and educator currently based in Arkansas, U.S.A who uses photography to pursue personal stories of people of colour, in Arkansas and Mississippi Deltas. He also uses a view camera to create still life studies on the topics of race, history, blackness as material, and the role of the black artist. In 2014 Aaron founded a curatorial project titled Photographers of Color to aggregate the historical and contemporary work made by artists of colour working in lens-based media. He is currently developing the Center for Photographers of Color within the School of Art at the University of Arkansas in the form of a Post MFA Research Fellowship appointment with teaching duties.  Aaron received his M.A. from Ohio University and an M.F.A from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University and participated in the 2018 Light Work Artists-in-Residence at Syracuse University. Plus this week photographer Rhodri Jones takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ Rhodri Jones, was born in Gwynedd, Wales in 1963, and has been based near Bologna, Italy since 2000. His interest in photography began in the mid 80s and in 1989 he moved to Nicaragua and started to work as a professional photographer with the Sandinista Press Agency (ANN) and in El Salvador with FENASTRES union and local human rights organisations. Rhodri returned to Europe in 1991 and has worked as a self-taught professional photographer ever since on both personal and commissioned projects around the world since 1989 and has had six books of his work published; Made in China (2002), Return/Yn ôl (2006), Hinterland (2010), Scambi Ferroviari (2011), Cosi E’ (2015) and Marconi Express (2019). Described by Magnum photographer, Philip Jones Griffiths as “a Welsh poet with a camera”, Rhodri has exhibited in China, Ireland, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the UK and USA. His images and stories have been distributed by Panos Pictures since 1992, and seen in multiple leading magazines, newspapers, publishers worldwide. His work is held in several public and private collections. She was born in 1971 in New Brunswick, New Jersey and raised in Toms River, New Jersey. She received her BFA from the Pratt Institute in 2010 and her MFA from Yale University in 2017. She was awarded the Juncture Fellowship in 2016 from the Orville H. Schell, Jr. Center for International Human Rights/Yale Law School for her Roma project and in 2020 a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. Danna has worked on photographic projects for Yale University, the ACLU, and the New Yorker, The New York Times and The New York Times Magazine among others. In episode 113 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering emotional connection, the importance of heroes in our creative lives and ask's "What is the reality of earning a living as a commissioned analogue photographer?" Plus this week photographer Nicholas J. R. White takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ Nick Wynne was Born in 1971 in Parkgate Wirral in the North West of England. His father was a builder who ran a small firm with his mother and he moved house a lot as a child as his family would buy land build a house, sell and repeat. Nick ran away from his private high school, ended up in a comprehensive school and failed all of his exams except for art. An art teacher in high school introduced him photography and showed him how to make prints on an old enlarger. Nick went onto art collage in Wallasey near Liverpool out of desperation and completed a diploma and a two year BTEC in photography where he was introduced to the photographer Tom Wood. In 1989 Nick travelled to Romania by car and photographed Romanian and Hungarian gypsies before going onto Wolverhampton University to study photography under photographer Nick Hedges but left after a few weeks. He went alone to the United States and hitched from New Jersey before buying a car and travelling to photograph in Arizona State Penitentiary, sleeping rough on petrol station forecourts, he was escorted out of town in New Jersey for vagrancy and spent a day in 'The Pen'. Returning to the UK in 1990/1 Nick applied to Gwent Collage Newport led by photographer Daniel Meadows and left at the end of the course without collecting his certificate or proof he'd ever been there! In 1992/3 he worked on building sites as a labourer, got married and had a child, with three more children following in quick succession. In 1995 he moved to Birkenhead and having bought and sold many properties has returned to Neston, Wirral. Nick has no website but posts his work both new and old on Twitter and Instagram with great passion and regularity. He owns and runs a small fencing firm consisting of himself and one labourer. In addition to his personal work, Nicholas also takes on commercial and editorial assignments for clients including TIME, Bloomberg Businessweek, Financial Times Weekend, and the Telegraph Magazine. He has won a number of awards including the Magenta Foundation Flash Forward,2019, Landscape Photographer of the Year, 2018, British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain Winner, 2018, and Royal Photographic Society Environmental Bursary, Under 30’s Winner, 2017. Plus this week photographer Mandy Barker takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ Mandy Barker is an award-winning photographer whose work involving marine plastic debris over the past 10 years has received global recognition. Working with scientists she aims to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the world's oceans. Her work has been published in the National Geographic Magazine, TIME Magazine, The Guardian, The Financial Times, The New Scientist, amongst others and used to illustrate key scientific research papers. Barker was shortlisted for the Prix Pictet Award SPACE 2017, and nominated for the Magnum Foundation Fund and Deutsche Borse Foundation Photography Prize 2020. In 2012 she was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Environmental Bursary and in 2018 she was a recipient of the 2018 National Geographic Society Grant for Research and Exploration. Her first book Beyond Drifting: Imperfectly Known Animals was selected as one of the Ten Best Photography Books of 2017, by the Smithsonian and  her book Altered Ocean was chosen by The Royal Photographic Society as one of their Top 10 Photobooks of 2019. Also, in 2019 Barker collaborated with Stanford University with the launch of the virtual reality experience, Ripple: the unintended life of plastics in the sea. In this special episode UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on the past week of images coming out of the United States documenting police violence, the protests following the death of George Floyd and the support for Back Lives Matter. Plus photographer Micaiah Carter takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ The 23-year-old Brooklyn-based photographer Micaiah Carter has barely been out of college a year yet he has already photographed Serena Williams for the cover of Adweek, Ciara for King Kong magazine, Afropunk portraits for Vogue, and advertising campaigns for Nike, Converse and the fashion label Thom Browne. Micaiah is currently working on his first monograph, 95 48, whose title refers to his and his father’s birthdates and which takes as its inspiration photographs of his father and his friends during the 1970s. Just months after graduating from Parsons School of Design, Carter’s work was shown at the Brooklyn Museum as part of the exhibition Black History, Black Future, a collaboration with Adidas. Carter has in three short years photographed numerous influential artists including painter, Kehinde Wiley, film maker, Spike Lee and actress, Taraji P. Henson. In episode 110 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering the photographic image as proof of history, creating an archive, and the potential repetition of portrait photography. Plus this week photographer Witold Krassowski takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer’s the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?’ Born in 1956 Witold Krassowski studied linguistics at the University of Warsaw and the Sorbonne, he received his doctorate in photography in 2009 at the Radio and Television Faculty of the University of Silesia in Katowice and three years later he received his post-doctoral degree. After receiving his final diploma his photographic hobby became his career. The situation at the time in Poland at that time was in major transition as communism was crumbling, and the Solidarność movement was created. For several years Krassowski was busy running and learning, documenting a country in a state change and turmoil. Disgusted with the state of the Polish economy, he moved to London in 1988. There he became involved with the Independent Magazine, where the photo editor Colin Jacobson offered him some assignments and suggested he join the Network Photographers agency. Krassowski has worked as a photo-reporter in Afghanistan, the UK, Mongolia, and India, but most of his creative output comes from Poland. His work has been published in various titles including Liberation, Tempo, Stern, Der Spiegel, The Observer, The Independent, The New Yorker, Forbes and Fortune, among others. He was the recipient of the World Press Photo Award in 1991 and 2003. Since 2009, he has published four books including Powidoki Z Polski: After Images of Poland and exhibited at the Freightdoors Gallery, California, USA; The Photographers Gallery, London, UK; Noorderlicht Photofestival, Holland and Perpignan Photo Festival, France.
