S02E05: Hubble Constant and Skylab: The Latest in Astronomy News
Today’s Space, Astronomy, and Science News Podcast Astronomy Daily the Podcast - Episode May 15, 2023 European spacecraft, Jupiter IC moons explorer (JUICE), successfully freed a 16-meter radar antenna, which had been jammed for a month, and will use it to investigate Jupiter's moons Callisto, Europa, and Ganymede. NASA's Lunar Flashlight mission, which aimed to hunt for ice in the lunar south pole, failed to reach its intended orbit and is now orbiting the sun. Russian cosmonauts successfully completed a five-hour and 14-minute spacewalk outside the International Space Station to activate a radiator and conduct other maintenance activities. Astronomers have captured images of a star named ZTF SLRN 2020 consuming one of its planets, causing the star to brighten 100 times its normal level. This confirmed the long-standing assumption that stars swallow their planets, and the process has been illuminated. Steve Dunkley and digital assistant Hallie also briefly discuss the Hollywood movie Red Planet and its portrayal of space janitors. Steve returns after recovering from COVID-19. S02E02: SpaceX vs the Environment, Cosmic Radiation on Planes, and China's Lunar Exploration Plans
Today’s Space, Astronomy, and Science News Podcast In this episode of Astronomy Daily, host Steve Dunkley and digital reporter Halley discuss various space-related news stories. The first news is about a study conducted by scientists from the University of Helsinki that measured cosmic radiation levels on board several aircraft on various flights. The results showed that exposure levels vary greatly depending on route, altitude and solar activity. The researchers recommended that airlines provide their crews with radiation monitoring tools and ensure that passengers are aware of the risks. In other news, environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against SpaceX and the Federal Aviation Administration over the company's launch activities at its Texas facility. The lawsuit alleges that the FAA violated federal law by granting SpaceX a launch license without conducting a thorough environmental review of the potential impacts of its activities on the surrounding wildlife and natural habitat. The case is ongoing in federal court. China has also announced its plan to send its astronauts, also known as "taikonauts," to explore the Moon, with the hopes of landing someone on it by the year 2030. China's lunar exploration program is part of their larger space ambitions, which include plans for a space station in Earth orbit and a mission to Mars in the 2030s. The episode also discusses the Jansky Very Large Array, a radio telescope array in New Mexico that is being used for a wide-ranging and continuous search for techno signatures, signals that would betray or give away the existence of an accomplished technological society. S02E01: Lunar Landings, Cybersecurity, and Repurposing Satellites
In this Astronomy Daily podcast episode, new host Tim Gibbs (AstroTim) is joined by Halley to discuss the latest news in space exploration. Private companies like Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, Mast and Space Systems, Blue Origin, and SpaceX are planning multiple missions to the Moon, some to deliver scientific instruments and payloads, while others will transport humans in the future. SpaceX's Starship rocket prototype achieved launch successfully, but it exploded during its seperation attempt. Thales has successfully demonstrated its ability to protect a demonstration satellite from cyberattacks, highlighting the need for increased cybersecurity measures in space. Astria has launched a new satellite tasking capability in partnership with major satellite imagery providers, enabling customers to request and receive tasking of high-resolution satellite imagery within hours, offering more efficient and cost-effective access to high-resolution satellite imagery. Researchers at USC are collaborating with the software company Tangram Flex to replace the software components within legacy satellites to repurpose them, which could result in cost savings and less space debris. Voyager Two, launched in 1977, has begun using a small reservoir of backup power to keep its five science instruments operating, enabling the mission to postpone shutting down the science instruments until 2026.
