This week I’m sharing a personal story about my 18 yr old daughter dealing with college pressure and the strategy I used to help her. My bestie, Allison, said hearing this story really helped her in supporting her daughter so I thought I’d share it with you guys too. This week’s convo is about parenting hypocrisy. Recently, a mom shared with me all the “aha’s” she and her husband were having re: their expectations for their kids and the realization that they weren’t holding themselves to the same standard. As I like to say, “Model the behavior you seek”, and this mom was able to have a truly self-aware moment. More frequently than she’d probably care to admit, she was not modeling the calm reasonable behavior she expected from her kids. What about you? It takes confidence to cop to your own hypocrisy...AND it feels like a relief to finally loosen the perfectionist chains that often enslave us. Being a human is messy business and no one is perfect. Our convo this week includes a clip from my Mastermind where I discuss a 1968 study done in a school called the Pygmalion Effect. The Pygmalion effect is the phenomenon whereby others' expectations of a person affect the person's performance. The bottom line is that what we think and say about a child has the ability to greatly impact their future success. So remember, your words have power...when you speak unkindly about your kids, it represents what you’re really thinking or worried about and those thoughts can hinder their performance and their life. Think better thoughts. Say useful words. Find a new narrative. Encourage and support your kids. And if your kids aren’t “doing well”, get curious and figure out why. I’m leveling in a big way on the podcast this week about what’s really going on with your strong-willed kid. In this episode, I’m sharing an audio of me coaching a mom in the Mastermind whose 17month old was starting to display aggression towards her. I role play in this clip how to focus on the skill-building rather than the mistake or misbehavior. Remember, what we focus on grows. We want to uncover the root of the behavior to effectively teach new skills rather than putting the emphasis on the problem and accidentally reinforcing the negative behavior. Enjoy!
