Episode 54 - Bob Lee Murder Suspect Arrested, Clarence Thomas's benefactor, Trump humiliates Tucker, and TradCathLeaks
The one where we discuss the Bob Lee murder in San Francisco, Harlan Crow's shady real estate deals, Trump's humiliation of Tucker Carlson, and the "TradCath" intel leak suspect Jack Teixeira.Find this episode on your favorite podcast player here:https://pod.link/1647010767Here are some of the sources and articles we used to create this episode:SF officials slam Elon Musk, others, for spreading rampant crime narrative“District Attorney Brooke Jenkins blasted “reckless and irresponsible statements” that made incorrect assumptions about the Cash App co-founder Lee’s killing, which she said “serve to mislead the world in their perceptions of San Francisco and also negatively impact the pursuit of justice.”Fare thee well, Christopher Rufo; We hardly got to know you”“In Rufo-speak, “clean[ing] up our streets and parks” translates to increased sweeps that brutalize our unhoused neighbors, which is the kind of “law and order” rhetoric used by the likes of Nixon and Reagan to militarize America’s police force since the 1970s. Of those actually attempting to materially help our unhoused neighbors, Rufo says “nothing is more important than their own display of compassion,” and has peppered his writings and speeches with criticisms of Seattle’s “activist class.” Rufo derides what he views as “virtue signalling,” a right-wing talking point peddled by Breitbart to garner sympathy for the police and further foster hatred toward Seattle’s homeless community. He says he wants to “break up the homeless industrial complex,” another right-wing talking point that translates to defunding nonprofits currently offering services. Rufo’s campaign tag, “compassion with results,” left open the option of “reinstitutionalizating” the dangerously mentally ill, an argument for a return to the days of callous sanitariums.”Clarence Thomas and the Billionaire“These trips appeared nowhere on Thomas’ financial disclosures. His failure to report the flights appears to violate a law passed after Watergate that requires justices, judges, members of Congress and federal officials to disclose most gifts, two ethics law experts said. He also should have disclosed his trips on the yacht, these experts said.Thomas did not respond to a detailed list of questions.”Billionaire Harlan Crow Bought Property From Clarence Thomas. The Justice Didn’t Disclose the Deal.“A federal disclosure law passed after Watergate requires justices and other officials to disclose the details of most real estate sales over $1,000. Thomas never disclosed his sale of the Savannah properties. That appears to be a violation of the law, four ethics law experts told ProPublica. The disclosure form Thomas filed for that year also had a space to report the identity of the buyer in any private transaction, such as a real estate deal. That space is blank.“He needed to report his interest in the sale,” said Virginia Canter, a former government ethics lawyer now at the watchdog group CREW. “Given the role Crow has played in subsidizing the lifestyle of Thomas and his wife, you have to wonder if this was an effort to put cash in their pockets.”Thomas did not respond to detailed questions for this story.”Suspect charged in case involving leaked classified military documents“pA friend of Teixeira described his motives to The Washington Post as wanting to share — and show off — the secrets he knew to a small circle of online friends who bonded over video games.Teixeira served in a junior position, but he had access to an internal Defense Department computer network for top-secret information, called the Joint Worldwide Intelligence Communications System, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter. That access would have allowed him to read and potentially print documents classified at the same level as many of the leaked files.Teixeira told members of the group Thug Shaker Central on the Discord instant-messaging platform that he worked as a technology support staffer for the Massachusetts Air National Guard and at a base on Cape Cod, and this was how he was able to access classified documents, one member of the Discord server told The Post. Members of the group came together initially because of their shared interest in guns and military gear, the member said.”Press Pushes ‘Mass of Contradictions’ Storyline about Far-Right Radical Teixeira“Here’s a new article from the Post on Jack Teixeira which contains a series of assumptions I can only call disturbing. The headline reads, “He’s from a patriotic family — and allegedly leaked U.S. secrets.” In the vein of that headline, the article presents Teixeira as a bundle of contradictions. He didn’t want to hurt America. He was a patriotic guy from a patriotic, military family, etc.And yet the guy described in numerous interviews with young men or boys from his server community is a textbook far-right radical, the type who often commits acts of violence, though as yet we have no evidence of that from Teixeira. He was very into guns; he was viciously racist and antisemitic; he worshipped at the cult of Ruby Ridge and Waco and anti-government activism.”This is our current events recap program, where we offer our takes on what’s going on at the bleeding edge of the information war. Feel free to let us know what you think, suggest topics, etc. at didnothingwrongpod@protonmail.com, or in our group chat using the Substack app. Thanks for listening,Jay and Griff This is a public episode. Episode 53 - Taibbi and Musk break up, RFK Jr is running, and Greg Abbott wants to pardon Daniel Perry.
The one where we talk about the end of the bromance between Elon Musk and Matt Taibbi, RFK Jr's presidential bid, and Greg Abbott bending the knee to the shrill chorus of right-wing influencers.Find this episode on your favorite podcast player here:https://pod.link/1647010767Here are some of the sources and articles we used to create this episode:Mehdi Hasan debates Matt TaibbiThis does not go well for Taibbi. The Tech Dirt article we cited:“There remains no there there. It’s less than a Potemkin village. There isn’t even a façade. This is the Emperor’s New Clothes for a modern era. Taibbi is pointing to a naked emperor and insisting that he’s clothed in all sorts of royal finery, whereas anyone who actually looks at the emperor sees he’s naked.”RFK Jr. advanced the idea that the 2004 election was stolen“Republicans prevented more than 350,000 voters in Ohio from casting ballots or having their votes counted -- enough to have put John Kerry in the White House. BY ROBERT F. KENNEDY JR.”RFK Jr. Is Our Brother and Uncle. He’s Tragically Wrong About Vaccines.“We love Robert F. Kennedy Jr., but he is part of a misinformation campaign that’s having heartbreaking—and deadly—consequences.By KATHLEEN KENNEDY TOWNSEND, JOSEPH P. KENNEDY II and MAEVE KENNEDY MCKEAN”Joseph Flynn pushing a Trump/RFK ticketSteve Bannon spent "months" recruiting anti-vaxxer RFK Jr. to run against Biden as "chaos agent"“Former chief Trump strategist Steve Bannon spent "months" encouraging anti-vaxxer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to run against President Joe Biden in the 2024 election, according to a report from CBS News. People familiar with the matter told the outlet that Bannon hoped Kennedy could serve as a "useful chaos agent" in the election while also spreading "anti-vaccine sentiment around the country," according to CBS News' Robert Costa.”RFK Jr. and some frens.Gov. Greg Abbott announces he will push to pardon Daniel Perry after murder conviction“The unprecedented effort, which Abbott announced to his 1 million followers on Twitter, came as Abbott faced growing calls from national conservative figures such as Fox News host Tucker Carlson and Kyle Rittenhouse, who was acquitted in the shooting deaths of two Wisconsin protesters in 2020, to act to urgently undo the conviction. “Abbott calls for pardon of Daniel Perry after guilty murder verdict“Former Travis County assistant district attorney Rick Cofer said the Governor’s move is premature and has interrupted normal justice proceedings.“Daniel Perry hasn’t even been sentenced yet. He’s not even at this moment, eligible for a pardon from the Governor, even to apply for a pardon, requires final certified copies of judgment and sentence,” Cofer said.”Buses from Texas drop off more than 100 migrants in a bitterly cold Washington, D.C., on Christmas Eve“More than 100 migrants bused from Texas arrived at Vice President Kamala Harris’ residence in Washington, D.C., on Christmas Eve — enduring freezing temperatures in the state’s latest instance of sending migrants to cities led by Democrats. The Washington Post reported Sunday that volunteers who greeted the migrants received word that Gov. Greg Abbott had sent about 110 to 130 men, women and children on three buses that arrived at the Naval Observatory on Saturday night. Videos shared on social media show many of them clutching blankets over their shoulders in the 18-degree weather after the two-day trip.Abbott, a Republican, began sending migrants who arrived at the Texas-Mexico border to other cities in April as a way to antagonize the Biden administration. When the first bus sent to Harris’ residence arrived in September, Abbott went on NBC’s “Meet the Press” saying, “She’s the border czar, and we felt that if she won’t come down to see the border, if President [Joe] Biden will not come down and see the border, we will make sure they see it firsthand”This is our current events recap program, where we offer our takes on what’s going on at the bleeding edge of the information war. Episode 52 - Ricky Vaughn goes down with Michael Edison Hayden
The one where we are joined by Michael Edison Hayden, Senior Reporter with the SPLC, as we discuss Douglass Mackey's a/k/a Ricky Vaughn's conviction, Microchip's testimony, and the failed Manhattan NYYRC protest.Find this episode on your favorite podcast player here: https://pod.link/1647010767/episode/935d0aacd69f3b5b0c4ac328ebf36338Here are some of the sources and articles we used to assemble this episode:'ALT-RIGHT' DISINFORMATION KING FACES TRIAL“On Twitter in 2016, Twitter users interested in politics commonly stumbled across Mackey’s Ricky Vaughn account. He posted rapidly and at a high volume. Archives show that Mackey averaged over 100 tweets and retweets per day between 2014 and 2016. He mixed more benign news articles with more sinister fare, including links to the neo-Nazi site Daily Stormer and racist and antisemitic memes.”DOUGLASS MACKEY VERDICT SINKS 'SHITPOSTING' DEFENSE“The jury’s verdict carries potentially profound implications for the hard-right, anti-democracy movement that rose around the political career of former President Donald Trump. Not only does it set more clearly visible boundaries around what is legal when sowing disinformation online, prosecutors may have also created inroads to bring about charges similar to those filed against other radical-right activists who engaged in coordinated efforts to shape the outcome of elections. As for Mackey, the verdict rejected claims he made about his intentions in 2016. Following the Department of Justice issuing charges against him in January 2021, Mackey and his supporters repeatedly portrayed his actions as “shitposting,” an internet term of art for publishing inflammatory content that is protected by the First Amendment.”JUDGE UNSEALS DETAILS ON COOPERATING WITNESS IN DOUGLASS MACKEY CASE“Unsurprisingly, the government provides no details about how long this cooperation has been going on — but it presumably started before Mackey was arrested in 2021. Which is likely to make a lot of right wingers awfully nervous.”JACK POSOBIEC INTERVIEWED A PRO-HITLER DISINFORMATION POSTER ON ONE AMERICA NEWS NETWORK“Posobiec has an apparent personal connection to Microchip that goes beyond interviewing him on OANN. Posobiec referred to what he claimed was the creator of QAnon as his friend in a tweet he published on March 8, 2019. He made the claim six months after he produced the segment reporting that Microchip created QAnon with another person. Posobiec and Microchip both promoted fake antifa Twitter accounts as part of a disinformation campaign intended to discredit the leftist protest movement, Buzzfeed reported in March 2017.“Well seeing as QAnon was started by two guys that are friends of mine, wouldn't that make sense?” he wrote in response to a comment that he “speaks the same language” as QAnon.”TRUMP PROTEST: SMALL GROUP OF FORMER PRESIDENT'S SUPPORTERS, FOES FACE OFF AHEAD OF COURT APPEARANCEDuring Tuesday's pro-Trump rally in lower Manhattan, hosted by the New York Young Republican Club, Greene fired back at Adams, saying, "While you allow crime in your streets, and you sent your henchmen down here ... Democrats are the party of violence."Speaking through a megaphone, Greene told Trump supporters, "I am here to protest and use my voice and take a stand.""Every American should take a stand.," Greene said. "This is what happens to communists' countries. Not the United States of America. We have to take a stand against the injustice, the corruption and the communist Democrats."At one point, members of the New York Young Republicans Club began chanting "USA! USA!"This is our current events recap program, where we offer our takes on what’s going on at the bleeding edge of the information war.
