Circadian physiology with Prof Karyn Esser

Prof Esser talks about what we know with regards to what impacts the circadian rhythm (and what even is it?) and how important regulating both our master clock and the peripheral clocks for our overall health outcomes. We discuss how exercise impacts our circadian biology, and if there is a ‘better’ time of day to do exercise. We also talk about the impact of the circadian rhythm on metabolising different nutrients and what we do or don’t know about the impact of the circadian rhythm on the absorption of pharmaceuticals and supplements. We also talk about sex differences. This is a great conversation and I think you’re going to love it.Dr Esser is a Professor of Physiology and Associate Director of the Myology Institute at the University of Florida. Her lab has been working in the area of skeletal muscle adaptation for over 20 years. Initially research was focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that underlie adult skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise. However, in 2002 they were using an early generation microarray assay and discovered that genes important for circadian rhythms were also at work in skeletal muscle. Since that early observation, her lab has pioneered research on the role of circadian rhythms and the circadian clock mechanism in skeletal muscle. Currently our lab is focused on; 1) basic science experiments to define the genomic network downstream of the clock that modulates muscle health. 2) learning how age changes the clock function in skeletal muscle and other tissues; and 3) learning how exercise works with the circadian clock to help promote tissue and systemic healthDr Karyn Esser can be found here https://www.linkedin.com/in/karyn-esser-a187333 Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenSave 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk off your first order

We discuss the bi-directional relationship between the gut and our exercise patterns, what sex differences might exist, and the relative usefulness of probiotics and prebiotics for helping optimise our gut health. It’s an exciting time for research in this area, with so much we don’t know. Dr Campbell is an expert in what we DO know. Dr Sara Campbell is an ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR and the GRADUATE PROGRAM DIRECTOR  in KINESIOLOGY AND APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY at Rutgers University, with a specialist research area in metabolism, the gut and the impact of exercise on the gut.Sara can be found here: https://kines.rutgers.edu/departmental-info/faculty-biographies/317-faculty/full-time-faculty/788-sara-campbell  Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenSave 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk off your first order

Rick Johnson MD - Why nature wants us to be fat

Mikki and Rick talk about how he developed an interest in fructose, how fructose impacts blood pressure and what types of foods and drinks are most detrimental (i.e. do we have to avoid fruit?).  They also talk about Rick’s new book Nature Wants us to be Fat, and the importance of the ‘survival switch’ and how the modern environment has turned something that kept us alive for thousands of years into something that now drives metabolic disease. Dr. Richard Johnson was formerly the chief of the Renal Division and Hypertension at the University of Colorado for nine years. He’s a physician that is trained in internal medicine, infectious disease, and nephrology. Along with having an active clinical practice, he is a widely cited NIH-funded scientist who has lectured in over 40 countries and has authored three books, The Sugar Fix, The Fat Switch, and the new Nature Wants Us to Be Fat. Dr. Johnson has a special interest in the role of sugar and especially fructose and its byproduct uric acid in driving metabolic and kidney disorders. Dr Richard Johnson: https://drrichardjohnson.com/Nature Wants Us to be Fat https://www.amazon.com/Nature-Wants-Fat-Prevent-Reverse-ebook/dp/B097XMY9VG Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenSave 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk off your first order

Prof Mike Murphy - Creator of Coenzyme q10 supplement, MitoQ

This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to Mike Murphy, Professor of Mitochondrial Redox Biology and co-creator of Mito Q, a coQ10 supplement  that is specifically designed to target the mitochondria and offset free radical damage created through oxidative stress and improve health-related outcomes related to mitochondrial dysfunction. Of which there are many! Despite the science-based nature of the topic, Mike is great at distilling down information that we can all understand, and we discuss the latest research that links mitochondria to our health and wellbeing, and some tactics to help improve our cellular health.Mike Murphy studied chemistry at Trinity College, Dublin (1980-4) and obtained a PhD in Biochemistry from Peterhouse, University of Cambridge (1984-7), carrying out research in the group of Martin Brand on mechanisms of mitochondrial proton pumping. Mike then carried out postdoctoral work at Columbia University (1988), followed by working as a VSO teacher in Zimbabawe (1989) and as a Lecturer in Biochemistry at Trinity College, Dublin (1990-2). He then moved to the Biochemistry Department at the University of Otago, New Zealand (1992-2001), to set up his own research group, moving up to the level of Associate Professor.  During this time he spent sabbatical visits in the lab of Jeff Schatz in Basel and that of Victor Darley-Usmar in Birmingham, Alabama.  Mike joined the MRC MBU to establish an independent research group to study mitochondrial dysfunction in 2001. He was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand (Hon FRSNZ) in 2012 and was awarded the Keilin Memorial Lecture and Medal in 2016. Mike has been a Wellcome Trust Investigator since 2016. He was appointed Professor of Mitochondrial Redox Biology (Cambridge University) in 2018.  Mike was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci) in 2019. Mike can be found here: https://www.mrc-mbu.cam.ac.uk/research-groups/murphy-groupMitoQ: https://www.mitoq.com/ Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenSave 20% on all Nuzest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk off your first order
