Episode 63: Places You've Never Been

Send Wilk a text with your feedback!Twenty Nine years ago I moved out of my parents for the first time. It's so hard to believe it was that long ago, but harder to believe all I've seen and done over those 29 years. The years have passed and many things have changed, but much of what I learned about life in my late teens and early twenties came as the result of working for my dear friends Rick and his wife Jean at their restaurant RJ's Bar & Grill in Okoboji, IA.This week Rick re-posted a quote from Anthony Bourdain (posted by The Ritz, another bar/restaurant in the Okoboji Lakes area) that really stood out to me. The quote really hit home for a number of reasons and brought back many memories. Check out this episode for the details of that quote and many of the great memories and thoughts it stirred up for me.Life is not just about living, life is about living fully. Too many have forgotten what it means to step out of their comfort zone, to do what they might not normally do, or to have that conversation with a stranger you may have nothing in common with just to see what makes them tick. Make it happen!Previous DTH episodes mentioned in this episodeEpisode 48: Bridging the DivideEpisode 58: Comfort Zone to Courage ZoneWhat have you done today to make your life a better life? Episode 62: Hush Little Baby

Send Wilk a text with your feedback!"Don't buy your kids all the things you wished you had, teach your kids all the things you wish you'd known" ~author unknownIt's not the things you give or buy for your children that will make the difference, it's the lessons we teach and the time we spend that will be what matters. This Father's day weekend I was reflecting on a number of things and a few different things stood out. I lost my father 11 years ago, but I was fortunate and blessed enough to have him in my life up until my mid 30s. Many children are not fortunate enough to have a father in their life at all. This is one of the major problems we face as a society. Much more of an issue than most of the nonsense we're lead to believe are the great problems we face today.Being a father has been the greatest gift and honor of my lifetime and reading to my daughter daily is one of my great joys. I recently had a conversation with my wife about a book my daughter has me read to her all the time, several times a week in fact. The book is a different version of the classic lullaby "Hush Little Baby". This wonderful book was written by Sylvia Long. My daughter loves it and in this episode I speak about a very powerful lesson Sylvia Long has conveyed in her version of this classic.Related/Mentioned Episodes of the Derate The Hate PodcastEpisode 42: 10 Lessons I will pass on to my childrenEpisode 44: Faith, Family and Education with Kendall QuallsEpisode 54: Raising Emotionally Intelligent Children with Stephanie The world is a better place if we are better people. Episode 61: Intentions Alignment and Rapid Manifestation with Ellie Shoja

Send Wilk a text with your feedback! They say referrals are one of the greatest forms of compliment and I am incredibly grateful this week that one of our former guests, Jonathan Troen introduced me to this week's guest, Ellie Shoja. Jonathan was my guest in DTH Episode 59 talking about his movement,  Self-Love Revolution. Ellie is another of so many great guests that I have been honored to have on the podcast lately speaking about her journey from trauma to triumph.Who is Ellie Shoja?Ellie Shoja is a serial entrepreneur, award winning author, co-founder of Peace Unleashed, TEDx speaker, and the co-host of the Unleash Your Peace podcast. Ellie has been is best known for being a Mindset Expert, Motivational Speaker, and  described as a “Modern-day Rumi”  whose passion for uplifting and empowering others is at the core of the Peace Unleashed philosophy. For those who aren’t familiar with Rumi, the 12th century Persian Poet and Master Sufi, this in itself is worth checking out. As a first generation immigrant & the daughter of an international con man, Ellie moved several times per year, often with her family being on the run and living in refugee camps in Germany before immigrating to the United States at the age of 15. By the age of 12, Ellie was suffering from severe nervous tics, anger and mood disorders, and suicidal ideation. What began as a personal healing journey turned into an 18-year deep dive into various modalities of psychology, philosophy, and spirituality. Ellie founded Peace Unleashed in order to share the inner peace strategies, tools, and processes that helped her become one of the most grounded and peaceful people living today. Episode 60: Critical Race Theory is Hateful Nonsense

Send Wilk a text with your feedback! "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."  ~Martin Luther King Jr.There is very little doubt in my mind that Dr. King would be spinning in his grave when it comes to the topic of "Critical Race Theory". There is way too much good in this world to let the loudest, most hateful and most divisive voices win the day. Critical Race Theory is just that, hateful and divisive nonsense.Do you want your children automatically labeled as a victim or oppressed because they are a child of color? Do you want your child automatically labeled as a racist because they are white? That is how Critical Race Theory works, we shall no longer judge a person by the content of their character, but by the color of their skin. It does not matter how old you are, where you come from, what good or bad you've done in your life, nothing matters but the color of your skin...I've been blessed on this podcast to have had the opportunity to speak with some really great guests. One of the guests I had in recent months is Kendall Qualls of TakeChargeMN.  Kendall is a former congressional candidate who found great success in business and in the military. He also happens to be a black man who lived in the ghettos of Harlem and trailer parks in Oklahoma as a child. He knows what it means to come from poverty, know what the American dream is and knows that anyone can achieve it, no matter the color of your skin. Kendall has been in the news lately speaking about CRT and the nonsense used by those who wish to keep us divided. Please  check out episode 44 where Kendall and I discuss Faith, Family & Education.Another notable guest I've had the pleasure of speaking with is Dr. Elana Fischbein who is taking the fight against CRT to the front lines with her organization, NoLeftTurn.us. Episode 57: Bringing the Veteran Dad Home with Ben Killoy

Send Wilk a text with your feedback! As a father you often have to wonder, or may find yourself questioning, am I on the right path, am I doing what's right for my family, am I leaving the legacy a good father should? These questions are often a lot harder to answer for our military veterans for any number of reasons.  This week's guest,  Ben Killoy is a US Marine Corps veteran on a mission,  a mission to master leadership principles and use his passion for leadership to help dads understand who they are, develop their skills to overcome adversity, and to own their life choices to enable them to truly come home to their families.  This is done through his weekly Military Veteran Dad podcast and his daily The Business of Fatherhood podcast.Who is Ben Killoy? Ben Killoy is a U.S. Marine Veteran turned blogger, life coach, speaker, and podcaster whose mission is to bring Military Veteran Dads home to their families. He resides in Janesville, WI, with his wife and three beautiful kids. Ben went through what most transitioning veterans go through, the feeling of needing to redefine their identity outside of the structure of the military and rediscovering your passion and purpose for life. A seminar changed it all for him and allowed him to discover his passion for leadership and helping other veterans and Dads be the best parents they can. Since that seminar he has been on a mission to master leadership principles and use his passion for leadership to help dads understand who they are, develop their skills to overcome adversity, and to own their life choices to enable them to truly come home to their families. Ben’s podcast combines his own insights into his unique experiences with the military and fatherhood, along with interviews and discussions with other thought-leaders from around the world. The fact that Ben’s insights are based on his personal experiences, and the experiences of the other veterans he interviews gives credibility to his understandings. Sharing both his successes and failures brings a more heart centered approach to his podcast, enabling a deeper connection to his audience. Ben is available for speaking engagements, both online and in person, and is more than happyThe world is a better place if we are better people. That begins with each of us as individuals. Episode 56: Sparking Change to Better the World

Send Wilk a text with your feedback! Here at the Derate the Hate podcast, we're all about BETTERING THE WORLD ONE ATTITUDE AT A TIME. In doing so I'm always looking for inspiring and intriguing guests that are looking to do the same. I truly found a kindred spirit when I heard about and reached out to this week's guest, Rick Ornelas.Who is Rick Ornelas?Rick Ornelas is an author and Positive Change Expert who teaches men and women to unlock their amazing potential to create an incredible future and change the world around them. He’s the author of 12 Hours of Heaven; Lessons for a Better World and founder of I Spark Change, a global movement and online community of those who seek to make the world a better place one act at a time.Rick wasn’t always interested in helping others on a global scale despite being pushed repeatedly in that direction by near-death experiences, family tragedies, and deaths. It wasn’t until the ever-worsening times of 2020 when he was laid off, quarantined, and desperate that he finally got the wake-up call. His awakening came in the form of divine inspiration and an awe-inspiring spiritual connection when he least expected it. He went from hopeless, to writing a best-selling book in under three months while envisioning and creating an incredible future. This fulfilled the dream he had been ignoring for years: to build a community of amazing souls to spread positivity, hope, and love while creating a ripple effect throughout the world. The I Spark Change community has grown at a phenomenal rate of over 800% in just a few months. Rick has been featured on multiple media outlets, including national & international television and radio discussing similar topics. Episode 55: Not My Truth, Not Your Truth, There is only THE TRUTH

Send Wilk a text with your feedback!Have you ever heard someone say, that's "My Truth" or "That's his/her Truth"? I don't know how it started, but here's another life tip from Wilk... There is no my truth, your truth, his truth or her truth, THERE IS ONLY THE TRUTH.In this week's episode I had to  bring up an article/video from the Daily Wire I saw of a professor at a college in southern California that was berating one of her students for a report he did where he called police heroes. She equates modern police to slave catchers in early American history. I only brought it up, because I saw on line where someone had defended her hatred by saying "that is her truth". There is no such thing as "her truth", there is only her hate filled perception of reality, big difference. Listen to this episode and let me know what you think. Maybe she'd benefit from episode 52 where I discuss the Reticular Activating System and the Perpetual Victim Mentality. If she would listen with an open mind I'm certain she'd benefit greatly as would anyone...Our good deed, feel good story this week comes out of Tempe, AZ where a group of big hearted, compassionate cops helped brighten the day of 4 year-old Gerald Philbrook after a heartless thief stole the toy tractor him and his father restored. You'll want to grab a tissue or two and check out this story from the Good News Network. As I do every week, I ask you, “what have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place?” The world is a better place if we are better people, and that begins with each of us leading a better life.
