On this week's Silicon Valley Insider host Keith Koo speaks with Dr. Mike Fenn, PhD who is the Director of Healthcare and Lifesciences at Harvard Innovation Labs. Mike goes into detail of what Harvard Innovation Labs is all about and how the ecosystem works including how startups apply for the program and how corporate partners engage with these startups.
Keith and Mike also talk about where innovation in healthcare and lifesciences is headed in 2019 in beyond with many exciting breakthroughs that are expected on the horizon.
On this week's pivot, Keith and Mike discuss pivots in healhcare with Mike giving some real world examples on what he has personally experienced as an entrepreneur and startup advisor.
About Mike Fenn:
Dr. Michael Fenn is the new Director of Healthcare and Life Sciences at Harvard Innovation Labs and recent transplant from the beaches of sunny central Florida. He is particularly passionate about helping academic-entrepreneurs, and bridging the gap between academic research and the venture world, having worked extensively in both. His entrepreneurial activities have resulted in early-stage startups achieving venture capital and angel investment, as well as success with SBIR proposals, intellectual property development, technology transfer, and navigating FDA regulatory pathways. Dr. Fenn was formerly an Assistant Professor and cofounding member of the Florida Institute of Technology’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, as well as the Director of the Center for Medical Materials and Biophotonics. Dr. Fenn has a diverse research background with experience in the areas of biomaterials, nanomaterials, tissue engineering, biophotonics, 3D bio-printing, and machine learning, with applications in, medical devices, in-vitro diagnostics, and drug delivery. He has published over 20 scientific papers, co-authored one textbook, and presented at over 50 international conferences, as well as served as Principal Investigator on NIH funded research.

Encore: The AI Delusion with author Professor Gary Smith of Pomona College

On this week's Silicon Valley Insider, host Keith Koo re-airs a very popular show with special guest Gary Smith who is the Fletcher Jones Professor of Economics at Pomona College in Claremont, Ca. Gary was also a professor at Yale and has written over 80 academic papers and 13 books and with his most recent being "The AI Delusion". With all the news regarding "Artificial Intelligence" and how this technology is rapidly advancing, Gary and Keith have a rational dialog on what AI currently is and where it is headed.
Keith and Gary talk about why Gary wrote his book and why AI is not yet ready to take over the world. AI is good for very specific tasks but not yet ready for task that involve critical thinking or human judgment. Gary is noted for a term he uses frequently "torturing data" in reference to finding causation in any data set whether valid or not. As a reminder, "correlation is not causation".

For the Cyber-Tip of the week, Keith talks about what to do if you had files lost from the Windows 10 upgrade.
In next week's show, Keith will intereview Jotham Ty who is the Founder and CEO of Gappify a Silcion Valley startup developing accounting "bots". Instead of training entry level accountants, Joatham is training people to develop accounting bots. Tune in next week to about Gappify.
