FTX Goes Bankrupt and Gets Hacked
"FTX has been hacked. FTX apps are malware. Delete them. Chat is open. Don't go on FTX site as it might download Trojans." That message from an FTX administrator was pinned on its official Telegram channel by FTX General Counsel Ryne Miller on Friday, mere hours after the crypto exchange filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. CoinDesk initially reported “mysterious outflows exceeding $600 million.” CNN says it was just $473 million, the New York Times $515 million. Early on Monday, Binance founder and CEO Chanpgeng Zhao announced his company "is forming an industry recovery fund, to help projects who are otherwise strong, but in a liquidity crisis." Paul Guerra and co-host Santiago Velez, a co-founder and the R&D division lead at Block Digital, welcome CoinFund president Christopher Perkins – who was at Lehman Brothers when it collapsed in 2008 – and StarkWare co-founder and president Eli Ben-Sasson to assess the still-accumulating fallout from the FTX debacle and to chart potential paths forward. What We Know About the Binance-FTX Bombshell
It's only been 24 hours since the Binance-is-buying-FTX bombshell dropped, but there’s already a lot to unpack and analyze – notably, that “is” is doing a lot of work, as CZ’s agreement to rescue SBF is, in legal terms, a “non-binding” letter of intent. Jim Bianco, the founder and president of Bianco Research, and Alex Valaitils, the founder of W3T and Web3 Pills newsletter, join Marco Olivera and Elaine Ly to talk about the ripple effects of this seismic event, including the many variables that remain unsettled. Binance Agrees to Acquire FTX
“We have come to an agreement on a strategic transaction with Binance for FTX.com,” tweeted FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried at 11:03 a.m. ET, thus containing what threatened to be the crypto industry’s greatest meltdown. That agreement, however, means Binance will acquire FTX and “help cover the liquidity crunch,” as CZ put it in his tweet announcing the ceasefire. As the dust settles, Ash Bennington and Marco Olivera welcome Jack Niewold, the founder of the Crypto Pragmatist newsletter, to talk about where FTX, Binance, and the industry go from here. Later, Jason Schwartz, a tax partner and the co-head of digital assets at law firm Fried Frank, joins Ash and Marco to discuss the broader implications of LBRY’s landmark case against the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Binance Squares Off With FTX
When it comes to crypto, this battle is as heavy as it gets. Last week's CoinDesk report that questioned the financial health of Alameda Research, the trading arm of FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto empire, prompted Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao to announce the exchange will sell its entire holdings of FTX's native token, FTT. And now we’ve seen a cycle of thinly veiled, passive-aggressive tweets between SBF and CZ, as the FTX boss attempts to ease concerns about the health of his companies. At the top of today’s Real Vision Crypto Daily Briefing, Nico Brugge and Ash Bennington provide additional color for this gripping, market-moving story. Nico and Ash also talk about a report that Binance helped Iranian firms trade crypto despite U.S. sanctions and OpenSea's take on NFT creator royalties. Later, political strategist Bobby Kaple joins the conversation to talk about crypto’s impact on Tuesday’s midterm elections in the U.S. Learn more about your ad choices.
