ep 239: Clutter Clinic: Closets

Hi friends! Last week we kicked off our Clutter Clinic Series talking about garages- if you haven’t listened, I encourage you to go back and check it out. We gave a TON of practical tips to help you tackle one of the largest areas of the home.Today we are continuing with our series with the ever-popular CLOSETS!  I’m talking about 5 different types of closets including:Linen closetsHall ClosetsGuest Room ClosetsKids ClosetsMaster ClosetsBefore we get into it, let’s look at some statistics that may surprise you:97% of surveyed realtors believe that homeowners covet closet space more than basement and attic storage space. (Braun Research Survey)61% of people who have a hard time finding anything in their closet end up buying new clothes. (OnePoll Survey)1 in 6 people have resorted to taking dirty clothes out of their laundry hamper when they are unable to find anything to wear. (OnePoll Survey)1 in 4 Americans describe their closets as being disorganized. (OnePoll Survey)It’s estimated that 80% of clothes are worn 20% of the time. (National Association of Professional Organizers Study)Now for the good news, most closet disorganization is easily fixable, but like most areas of disorganization, the key to lasting change is to get to the root of the problem.  The two most common reasons for closet disorganization stems from either:Consumption (i.e. too much stuff)Lack of storage  The truth is that even with the proper storage, our daily habits play a crucial role in maintaining an organized space. Let’s look at how the 5 Clutter Pitfalls can manifest in our closets:Procrastination: I’ll get to it later…Otherwise known as the “closed door syndrome”(out of sight, out of mind).Indecision: I don’t know what to do with it, so I’ll stick it in the closet.Guilt/Fear: I feel guilty getting rid of “X” so I’ll shove it in the back of the closet.Overwhelm: I’m ready to tackle the closet, but not sure where to begin or what to do next  (ie: strategy).Time: I’d get to it if only I had the time (a common response from folks with calendar clutter).Below are some of my tried and true closet tips to help you along the way:PURGE FIRST: Using our ESP (empty, sort purge  method), make sure that you get rid of anything you don’t use, need or wear.ASSESS INVENTORY: Sort items into 4 piles:  KEEP (in current space), DONATE, RECYCLE (or trash) , & RELOCATE (to somewhere else in the house).FACTOR YOUR SPACE TO INVENTORY RATIO: Avoid having more stuff than you do space.Linen Closets:No more than 2 sets of sheets per person.Avg of 4 towels per personUse baskets to keep things organizedHall Closets:Cycle seasonally if you canPurge at least once a yearMake things accessible and easy (think hooks, pullout bins, baskets)Guest Room Closets:Define the purpose (Avoid making it the junk drawer)Purge annuallyKeep white space (allowing room for things to cycle in and out throughout the year)Kids Closets:Install adjustable or modular systems that grow with your kidsMake items accessible for themAvoid storing memorabilia (ie baby’s first shoes)  and “grow clothes” (aka: hand-me-downs)  in their closetMaster Closets:Balance your space to inventory ratio (how much stuff do I have in relation to my space)Design the space per your habits (ie: do I prefer to fold or hang?)*download our free checklistIdentify your patterns (Take the closet quiz below):1. Do you currently have more than 5 items in your closet that still have tags?   Yes  No2. Do you have items in your closet that no longer fit you?  Yes  No3. Do you have items in your closet that you know you will no longer wear? (i.e.: shoes that hurt, a dress you wore to a wedding, etc.)  Yes  No4. Is there a particular clothing area that is your downfall? (i.e.: shoes, purses, jeans, etc.) If so, please list:    ___________________________________________________________________ 5. If there were one thing you could change about your current closet, what would it be? ______________________________________________________________________ I hope you found this episode helpful. ep 237: Digital Organizing with Jaclyn Strauss

Hi Friends! Imagine a world where you have all of your information in one central place, safely, and simply…I’m talking passwords, medical records, phone numbers, you name it! And best of all,  you can access it anywhere you are? Our guest today did more than just imagine it-she created it.  Joining me today is Jaclyn Strauss, founder of My Macro Memoir-a digital memory assistant for all of life’s information.Jaclyn is a CPA for a fortune 100 company, who is active in her community and involved in all the day to day happenings within her family-especially her 2 adorable kiddos.Tired of being the “go to” source for information in her family, and wasting time retrieving the same info over and over (think school forms, medical records, etc), Jaclyn knew there had to be a smarter way.“My Macro Memoir was born out of a need that I personally had as a mom of 2 children, a busy working professional who had stuff here, there and everywhere.” Through a series of Yes or No prompts, My Macro Memoir acts as a personal memory assistant so you aren’t left wondering “where’s my stuff?”You can add as much or as little information as possible, and it’s broken down into 7 simple sections.During our conversation, Jaclyn and I talk about Prioritizing Important vs UrgentHow we need to slow down before we speed upWhy this is a cross-generational toolJaclyn has built an incredible online community of users, free workshops, and coaches to help people get started.Make sure to check out the links below to learn more or to connect with Jaclyn. Are you a Professional Organizer, or thinking about becoming one? We would love to talk to you about our SBO Partner Program!  Click here to get started!Connect with JaclynWEBSITE | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAMLINKEDIN | YOUTUBE30 DAY FREE TRIAL OFFER#whyimemoirJaclyn’s Book RecommendationWHO MOVED MY CHEESE?Please support us!FOLLOW TOL to have new episodes downloaded each week!REVIEW. ep 235: Work Life Integration with Emily Hay

Hi Friends! Years ago I intentionally started using the word “integration” in place of “balance” when describing the very delicate juggling act of motherhood, personal time, and my professional life.Over the years I’ve talked to countless women who are in a transitional period and not sure what to do: “I just had a baby and don’t want to go back to an office full-time” “ I’d love to run my own business, but don’t know where to start”“My kids are in school and I’m looking for something flexible and will challenge me”These are just a few of the comments I hear from people just like you.  My entire team at SBO (with the exception of Podcast Producer, Don) is made up of moms, and has been from the start. Today’s guest shares that same philosophy. Joining me today is Emily Hay, founder of Hay There Social Media-a boutique marketing agency where she helps women launch their own social media businesses so they too can live and work flexibly and intentionally with what she’s dubbed “Work+Life Integration Nation”.™”During our conversation we talked about:How integration differs from balanceLessons she’s learned since becoming a motherPractical advice for anyone who is feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to startAs a fellow Work-Life Integrator,  I’d love for anyone struggling with trying to achieve “balance” to listen to this episode.Sometimes life isn’t about either/or, it can be filled with both/and. Make sure to check out the links below for everything we talked about during our conversation. Are you a Professional Organizer, or thinking about becoming one? We would love to talk to you about our SBO Partner Program!  Click here to get started!Connect with EmilyWEBSITE | INSTAGRAM | FACEBOOK | TWITTER | LINKEDINEmily’s Book RecommendationFAIR PLAYPlease support us!FOLLOW TOL to have new episodes downloaded each week!REVIEW. ep 234: Single Black Motherhood with Kim Willams

Hi Friends! We are kicking off June with my new friend, Kim Williams.  Among her many accomplishments, Kim is an MBA graduate, full-time working mom, podcaster, and community builder. If she sounds like a rock star, it’s because she is.I was introduced to Kim a few months ago and was inspired by her story. After searching to find single black moms that were podcasting and not finding any that were current, she decided to fill the gap by creating a podcast and building a community that not only supports each other online but also offline.Kim is passionate about educating single moms so that they can live the life they desire without feeling alone on the journey of Single Motherhood, which can become so isolating.Because of the platform, moms all around the world (single and married) have been able to change the way they think, implement strategies to improve their life and the life of their children, and make connections with other moms.During our conversation we talked about:Why women are reluctant to ask for help, but so willing to give itWhat it’s like raising a spunky 8-year old as a single mother wearing all the hatsMoving to a new state during a pandemic without an in-person support systemKim talks about resilience, determination, and the power of community. She opens up about the struggles of being a single mother, as well as the most rewarding parts.I loved our conversation and encourage everyone to check out her podcast, Experiencing Motherhood, Single and Black.Make sure to check out the links below for everything we talked about on the show. Are you a Professional Organizer, or thinking about becoming one? We would love to talk to you about our SBO Partner Program!  Click here to get started!Take a Sneak Peak at our Enneagram & Clutter Digital CourseEnter promo code TOL30 at checkout to receive 30%!Connect with KimWEBSITE | INSTAGRAM | PODCASTKim’s Book RecommendationBELIEVE BIGGERPlease support us!SUBSCRIBE to TOL to have new episodes downloaded each week!REVIEW. It started as a lunch and learn event that turned into a series on different topics:Clutter Clinic: KitchensClutter Clinic: GaragesClutter Clinic: ClosetsClutter Clinic: Paper ControlClutter Clinic: Digital DetoxIn 2018, I turned the Clutter Clinic into a teachable model for other Professional Organizers. It helps them expand their business offerings from on-site organizing and virtual organizing, to include paid speaking engagements. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s the importance of being able to diversify service offerings and share knowledge in more ways than one. Make sure to check out the links below for everything we spoke about in this episode. Are you a Professional Organizer, or thinking about becoming one? We would love to talk to you about our SBO Partner Program!  Click here to get started!Take a Sneak Peak at our Enneagram & Clutter Digital CourseEnter promo code TOL30 at checkout to receive 30%!Connect with CourtneyWEBSITE | INSTAGRAMCourtney’s Book RecommendationsYOUR SECOND ACT | IT’S ALL TOO MUCHPlease support us!SUBSCRIBE to TOL to have new episodes downloaded each week!REVIEW.
