Trauma, Prison, and Abolition | Samual N. Brown & Jamilia Land | Ep #061
Text Us Your Feedback! (Likes, Dislikes, Guest/Conversation Recommendations). What is the cost of trauma? How does it show up in our society as deeply rooted racial and social challenges? What can we do?What does our way of handling criminality cost us? How much time have you spent thinking about how trauma, the prison system, and the 13th amendment abolishing slavery are related? This hour long conversation with Samual Nathaniel Brown and Jamilia Land is the most intense episode of the podcast that I have been honored to record. Both Samual and Jamilia share their different experiences growing up Black in America, how they learned to view the people around them, their parents authority, law-enforcement, social systems. We hear about where this led them, the impacts it has had, and the movements it has led them both to be a part of. In the first part of the episode … you’ll hear about the ‘Theory of Emotional Illiteracy Based Criminality’ - what it is, how it came to be, and what we all hope the future might hold for our kids and for society. In the second part of the episode ... you’ll hear a way of thinking about the Civil War, the end (?) of slavery, the 13th Amendment, and the prison system in California and the United States of America. This intense conversation is not from a place of distance … but a look from the inside out … from a man who was an inmate in the California prison system. At the time of this recording, Samual had been free from incarceration for less than 40 days. And from a woman that has been an activist in helping to end violence and champion human rights for all. Listen to this episode only if you’re ready to hear unapologetic voices for change, change in how we raise human beings to be emotionally literate adults, change to the criminal justice system, change to our relationships and how we can heal together, and change to our legal frameworks. In Samual’s own words … ‘This is an opp BetterHelp: Get 10% Off Your First Month Of Therapy The ManKind Podcast has partnered with Betterhelp to make it easier for listeners to access licensed mental health therapists who can aid them in their mental health journey. Young Dumb & Full of... PASSION | Brandon Clift | Ep #060
Text Us Your Feedback! (Likes, Dislikes, Guest/Conversation Recommendations). Brandon Clift is interviewed on the Dare To Dream Podcast, where he shares the many lessons gained from life since discovering men's work. During the fourth round of a sweat lodge during a New Warrior Training Adventure, Brandon realized that his life wasn't working. Despite early success in business and regular exposure to men's work, he realized that he was doing what society "expected" of him instead of following his true calling. That calling came in the form of abandoning the "expected path," and within 12 weeks, he had sold everything that couldn't fit into a suitcase. In the four years since leaving his life in Australia, Brandon has become entrenched in the world of men's work, where he now acts as a conduit and bridge for men looking to find deeper meaning and connection. Key takeaways from this episode: What it means to "be a man" should be unique to the man asking the question. Many live their lives based on the expectations of those around them versus following their true life's calling. There is no "shortcut" to doing your work. Try as hard as you may, there is no escaping the necessity for men to do the deep work. Sage Wisdom - How Spirit Heals The Wound | Les Gaines | Ep #059
Text Us Your Feedback! (Likes, Dislikes, Guest/Conversation Recommendations). Six years ago, while staffing a New Warrior Training Adventure, I met a Man that I know I've known for many lifetimes. His name was Les Gaines, and unfortunately he passed away almost two years ago. I miss this Man dearly and can remember the many conversations we have had that were healing, educational, and uplifting for both of us at various points in our life. Several weeks ago, I saw his wife posted a memory of Les playing with his Daughter, and I got so emotional thinking of his spirit and wisdom, and wanting others to be able to hear his voice and his words. A day after this, I was cleaning out my email inbox and came across a file Les shared with me, and when I opened it, it was a conversation we had four years ago. And I got emotional again after hearing it. After listening to it, I was floored at the wisdom that Les shared about leadership, healing wounds, and laying our "baggage" to rest to fully embrace all that we can be. I knew this was something more people get to listen to, so we decided as a Hosting Team to share this conversation. Key takeaways from this episode: When acting on purpose, be mindful of your associationsBe intentional What does it mean to be a mature ManBless and acknowledge your woundsIf you identify as a BIPOC (i.e. Black/ a Person of Some Obvious African Ancestry, Indigenous, or a Person of Color) Man, and are interesting in being a part of a safe space for BlPOC men to just be and do what we call “the inner work:” the refining of one’s way of living through self-reflection and introspection. Brandon Peele, author of the brand new book, “Purpose Work Nation: Leading Organizations in Service of Our Nation’s Sacred Purpose” which launches on February 22, 2022. Is it possible that the unraveling of narratives we’re seeing around us might be an opportunity to actually manifest some of the visions that the United States is founded on? Is there an opportunity in what seems like chaos … for Equality, Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and unity. e pluribus unum … And how might organizations and companies be the best positioned places to make this happen? And what do the Bald Eagle and the Bison have to do with this?Brandon’s work on building purpose has taken him all over the US speaking and working with audiences at some of the biggest companies in the world. Purpose Work Nation brings forth the research about where we’ve been, where we are now, and where we might choose to go, together. Your support for Brandon’s work will also have a positive impact for the ManKind Project! Brandon is generously donating a portion of the book’s proceeds to the ManKind Project USA.
