In this episode, hosts Mohannad, Prasanth, and Jason interview Teri Sippel Schmidt and Dr. Raym Geis about the Clinical Data Informatics initiative at SIIM. At its heart Clinical Data Informatics focuses on the use of tools such as Machine Learning algorithms, systems engineering, and medical imaging in sophisticated ways to derive insights and drive decision making for both clinical and business cases. Our guests introduce the series of videos developed in collaboration with SIIM. The discussion looks at the unique intersection of these disciplines and the need for a deep and broad understanding to create robust processes. Since January 2022, the team has provided educational videos from a curated group of CDI faculty to better understand the fundamentals of medical practice, imaging data, and data science. Teri Sippel Schmidt is an Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins Medicine and Marquette University. She serves on multiple boards at SIIM. She is a frequent guest of the podcast and has been very active in the Hackathon Competition at the annual conference, serving as both team leader and mentor to aspiring imaging informaticists. Raym Geis MD is a radiologist (semi-retired), interested in radiology data, standards, MLOps, and ethics of new data science approaches for medical imaging. He serves as Senior Scientist at the ACR Data Science Institute, Adjunct Associate Professor of Radiology at National Jewish Health, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He is a member of the ACR Data Science Institute Advisory Group and the Canadian Association of Radiologists' Artificial Intelligence Working Group, co-originator of the RSNA/SIIM National Imaging Informatics Curriculum and Course (NIIC-RAD). He was previously Chair of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) and Vice-Chair of the ACR Informatics Commission and is a Fellow of both societies. In this episode, hosts Mohannad and Prasanth interview Brad Genereaux about his chapter on Standards and Interoperability in the new edition of PII. Going beyond the #alphabetsoup of the important standards that govern the imaging informatics world, the discussion covers a brief history of the development of standards, such as DICOM, HL7, IHE, and looks at how they shape the landscape of the Imaging Enterprise. Indeed, awareness of these standards is even essential in deciding whether to adopt them, particularly when looking through the lens of deployment, maintenance and support, and eventual upgrade paths for the enterprise. In addition to developing richly integrated enterprises, standards play a crucial role in ensuring data portability. Brad highlights the working groups and their interactions with the community to maintain and improve these standards. In this episode, hosts @mohannadhussain and Prasanth chat with @sylviadevlin about downtime procedures. Whether planned or unplanned, there are many steps that can be taken to mitigate these (mostly) unavoidable events. While most agree that effective planning, monitoring, and communication/follow-up are key to successful execution, the nuances of how to optimize these can be challenging for even an experienced CIIP. System fortification for maximum uptime and seamless failover, detailed scripts for individual systems and processes, and templates for end-user communication are just a few of the topics covered in this deep dive. Sylvia Devlin has worked in medical imaging for more than half her life and there is no stopping her now. She started as one of the Radiology Department front desk clerk's after graduating high school while going to medical radiography school. After graduating, Sylvia enjoyed working in various imaging areas but always had a keen interest in pursuing information systems and PACS. Sylvia earned her understudies in Information Systems followed by a Master's in Informatics Administration. Today Sylvia is a diplomate of the American Board of Imaging Informatics, earning her CIIP in 2010. PIIRT Chapter 7 - Data Storage Jay Crawford In this episode, hosts Mohannad and Prasanth interview Jay Crawford about data storage technologies discussed in Chapter 7 of the second edition of PIIRT. These core concepts are critical for understanding not only issues of business continuity and disaster recovery, but also system performance, latency, and resource provisioning. The discussion covers storage standards and technologies such as RAID, as well as the change in storage utilization with advent of evolving storage media architectures going from magnetooptical, spinning platter, solid state, and tape archives. In particular, the transition from storage silos to enterprise imaging coincided with an explosion of storage needs for the next generation scanners, modalities such as Tomosynthesis, cardiology, pathology, dermatology, clinical research, comprising unique business with disparate storage needs, and datatypes, where the Vendor Neutral Archive pardigm has become the de facto standard. Jay Crawford is the Chief Imaging Informatics Officer at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is a Biomedical Engineer, with subsequent Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Health Administration with emphasis on Information Technology and Leadership. Chris is active in the open-source community and created the CornerstoneJS open-source project which is used by thousands of developers worldwide. He contributed to the DICOMweb specification and continues to work towards improving its performance for web-based viewing Jason Hostetter is a radiologist and web developer from Baltimore MD. Jason has been building websites for almost 20 years and has been active in the imaging informatics community and SIIM since residency. Jason is the founder and developer of Pacsbin, a cloud radiology teaching file platform used by institutions and educators all over the world. Simon Rascovsky is a Radiologist, Biomedical Engineer, and entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in imaging informatics. He has worked as advanced imaging research director and Imaging IT leader for several top healthcare institutions in his home country, Colombia, where he founded two teleradiology SaaS and clinical services companies. Pathology Standards and Hackathon In this episode, host Mohannad chats with Jason Klotzer and Markus Herrmann about pathology imaging standards. The team discusses the unique perspective of digital pathology and how the specialty has adopted DICOM standards to meet the needs of the pathologist's imaging workflow, as well as a hackathon sponsored by the DPA and DICOM Workgroup 26. Jason Klotzer is a customer engineer working for the Healthcare vertical of Google Cloud, and he is based out of Austin, TX and has worked in the medical imaging space for more than 15 years. He has architected several PACS and VNA systems, specializing in visualization of medical images for diagnostic reading, recently focusing on the needs of AI/ML and analytics in medical imaging. Markus Herrmann serves as Director of Computational Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Assistant Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on the development of novel quantitative imaging biomarkers and computer-aided diagnostic tests combining microscopy imaging, computer vision, and mathematical modeling. Markus is active in national and international efforts to advance the standardization and adoption of digital and computational pathology, including the DICOM Working Group 26 Pathology, the IHE Pathology and Laboratory Medicine domain, the Pathology Innovation Collaborative Community, the Digital and Computational Pathology Committee of the College of American Pathologists, and the Regulatory and Standards Task Force of the Digital Pathology Association.
