Episode 36: Our Favorite Books for Babies + A Bookish Baby Shower for (Return) Guest Mary Heim

We've got another "first" for the podcast this week! We are talking to our first return guest! You met Mary Heim in Episode 24 when she recorded with Meredith. Now, she's back to chat with both of us and we're so excited. Again. ;-) You'll hear a "bookish moment of the week" from each of us: an upcoming bookish holiday (now just past), finishing the second book in a series, and an audiobook binge. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We've got two current reads from each host and Meredith and Mary seem to almost coordinate their picks (we never discuss beforehand, so this is all coincidental), while Kaytee takes each round off to left field. For our deep dive this week, we surprise Mary with a virtual bookish baby shower. This deep dive focuses in on the board books and other titles for ages 0-2 and is the first in a series. We'll do subsequent chats about favorite books for 2-4 year olds and 5-8 year olds as well. So many great titles in this section! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we'd like to press into every reader's hands. This week Meredith and Kaytee are pressing more picture books, while Mary chooses a lovely essay collection she goes back to again and again. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. Episode 35: So many interesting novels + how we decide which books to keep and which books to donate

Meredith and Kaytee return to their microphones (albeit, one is in a different location than normal) to talk all things reading and great books. You'll hear a "bookish moment of the week" from each of us: choosing road trip audiobooks and a new Little Free Library update! Next, we discuss our current reads for the week: there's no rhyme or reason to our picks this week but almost all of them are wonderful. Which is my favorite thing. For our deep dive this week, we chat about books we buy and books we borrow and books we keep. How do we decide which books deserve a place on the physical TBR shelf (rather than the library hold list)? How do we decide which ones to let go of (and where to put them) when we've read them? As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we'd like to press into every reader's hands. This week's picks are a great beach read option and a lovely autobiography. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you'd like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don't scroll down! . . . . . 7:02 - A River In Darkness by Masaji Ishikawa 10:57 - Uprooted by Naomi Novik 12:41 - Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik 13:12 - A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum 17:20 - Eventown by Corey Ann Haydu 21:48 - Mainline Candle Company 22:09 - Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah 24:33 - Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens 25:19 - Tilly and The Book Wanderers (Pages & Co., #1) by Anna James 26:19 - Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Episode 34: Engrossing Non-fiction + How We Rate our Books (and an Unplanned Rant about Bookstagram)

Kaytee and Meredith are back in your earbuds for some more great book chat this week! You'll hear a "bookish moment of the week" from each of us: Meredith's Little Free Library update and Kaytee's piano lesson reading. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week: there's a lot of interesting non-fiction in this week's selections, as well as a number of titles that friends and family had pressed into our hands a few episodes ago! For our deep dive this week, we are focusing on book ratings. What does 1-star mean to you and what does 5-star mean to you? We also take an unexpected detour into the bookstagram world and the way that "bookstagrammers" follow-up on their book posts. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we'd like to press into every reader's hands. We've got a title that has Amazon all confused and one that serves as a companion to a previous book press. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you'd like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don't scroll down! . . . . . 1:09 - Lost Boy by Christina Henry 1:46 - Episode 19 with Meredith's brother Scott 6:33 - Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley 9:33 - Episode 29 with Anna Hithersay 9:35 - White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo 13:11 - The Trial of Lizzie Borden by Cara Robertson 16:20 - Garlic and Sapphires by Ruth Reichl 17:28 - Currently Reading Challenge for 2019! 17:57 - Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain 20:14 - Medium Raw by Anthony Bourdain 21:00 - Big Nate: In A Class By Himself by Lincoln Peirce 23:27 - A Gift From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindburgh 32:51 - The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton 34:28 - The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides 34:31 - He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly 43:10 - North and South by John Jakes 43:15 - North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell 47:46 - Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson 48:18 - The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton *Please note that all book titles linked above are Amazon affiliate links. We're back to regularly scheduled programming around here and happy to welcome so many new listeners! You'll hear a "bookish moment of the week" from each of us: a TV-show experience that only happened because of bookish friendships, and a win in the "raising readers" world, one of our favorite places to report about! Next, we discuss our current reads for the week: brand new titles, buzzed about books and ones we think need more play in the book world. For our deep dive this week, we are focusing on Brick books for the Currently Reading challenge. We qualify these as books over 700 (or maybe 650) pages, and we've got a lot of them for you to choose from. Episode 29: Choosing Great Library Books + Special Guest Co-Host Anna Hithersay

Kaytee is recording with a special guest co-host this week, Anna Hithersay of The Post Party podcast. Anna is a homeschool mom and was a librarian in a former life, so I think you'll love our deep dive into choosing great books for your kids (and yourself) at the library. You'll hear a "bookish moment of the week" from each of the us: a bookish tattoo and a raising readers moment. Next, we discuss our current reads. This week has some thriller, some fairy tale, some romance, some middle grade. Basically, we took quite a few left turns. Our deep dive this week is a conversation with Anna about choosing quality books from the library when the selection is so overwhelming. We also talk about "twaddle" and authors that are sure bets. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we'd like to press into every reader's hands. A sweeping story of the South and a tiny classic that's sweet and lovely. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode.
