MUP Ep 224 – Diamond Campaigns 101

Campus Crier The Campus Crier is where we keep all the mythos related news and info for the podcast, this episode was recorded on August 16, 2021. I want to personally congratulate each of the Alumni of the Storytelling Collective’s Write Your First Adventure Workshop last month. The market has been flooded with over 50+ titles on the MR, Chaosium’s Community Creator Content hub. Ya’ll, I’m so proud of each and every one of you. These scenarios look amazing, the cover arts are BOSS, the Miskatonic Repository Creator’s Circle is buzzing, you’re being featured in Chaosium newsletters, and you’re making your first sales. I’m just– I’m just so proud of you guys. Congrats! Head over to the Miskatonic Repository and make someone’s day by checking out their newest creations!  Annnd speaking of the Miskatonic Repository, Miskatonic Repository Con GM Signups just opened up! This virtual con will be hosted October 15th – October 17th. We have 3 awesome panels and over 16 events already submitted! So, come play some 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu with us! A link to the TTE will be in the show notes… and you can email MisktatonicRepositoryCon@gmail.com to get in touch!  Innsmouth The Missing Child: A Gamebook is a choose your own adventure styled solo game book where you are an investigator brought in to find the whereabouts of a missing child amongst the odd and terrible inhabitants of Innsmouth. It has funded with $23k of a $1300 goal and still has 23 days left at the time of recording. The art looks sparse, but that’s what I would expect from a product of this type. You can get a PDF for as little as $9 and a physical starting at $17. Overall it looks pretty neat, and I’m trying to not back it. Free League has another Kickstarter out for two new products in their Forbidden Lands line, this time a bestiary of sorts called Forbidden Lands: Book of Beasts and a campaign called The Blood March. As we have come to expect from Free League, the art on display is absolutely gorgeous. And this seems to be a no brainer for any fan of the weird fantasy setting. You can get a pdf of both books for $35 or either individual book in print for $35. If you want both in print it will cost you $69. The project has already funded with $285k of a $12k goal, and will have another three days left at the time of this release. Good friend of the show and proprietor of The Old Ways Podcast, Mike Diamond, has officially announced a third campaign for their excellent live play series, but this time with a twist! They are currently accepting GM pitches for a new campaign run by a new Storyteller. So if you have a campaign in mind and have it well thought out put in your submission at the link in the show notes. You can also find Mike on our own Discord, where he is a mod, or over at The Old Ones Discord, or you can just email him at theoldwayspodcast@gmail.com  And finally, it is with great sadness that we have to say a final goodbye to RPG Legend Steve Perrin, who passed away earlier this month. Goodbye Steve, safe travels. https://www.chaosium.com/blogvale-and-farewell-steve-perrin-1946-2021/ The Discord Plug We have our MUP Discord and we are all there! We invite all of our listeners to come and enjoy the community of horror gaming and cute pet pics. A big birthday shout out to Zelda, the pup of patreon backer, Al Smith, who if you’re lucky enough to get a seat at this table, she’ll probably make an appearance. Also, good luck to the kitties, Spaghetti and Meatball, who are currently in foster care with one of our awesome listeners.  MU Discord server invite link: https://discord.gg/vNjEv9D  And thank you beaucoup to Murph for editing this episode. Patreon Plug We have a Patreon! To back us you can click the button on the sidebar of our website, mu-podcast.com or head over to Patreon directly at www.patreon.com/mup! One new backer!  Brolin Graham Just a reminder, we’re offering Patreon Backers a sneak peek into future episode guests! Back us for an opportunity to ask your favorite creators in the TTRPG circuit your questions!  And you can also help out the show by buying some merch from our Teepublic store!  Thanks to our backers so much for supporting the show!! Recent Gaming Bridgett – Pale Rider Playtest 2 MepaCon Man’s Best Friend by Jazmin Ospa Main Topic We create a monster from scratch! Campus Crier First things first. You might think that we have two guests on the show, but you would be mistaken! Bridgett Jefferies has agreed to co-host MUP with us on a trial basis to see how she likes it! So let’s give her a heart welcome! New Comet Games has released their latest Kickstarter, Corsairs of Cthulhu! It’s pirates versus tentacles on the high seas! As of the time of recording they have completely funded with more than 28 days left on the campaign. So to Ben Burns and the crew over at New Comet Games. Congratulations!  Friend of the show and all around brilliant artist Pat Long, aka SpiderQueenLong as she’s known on our Discord server, is one of the creative people behind “ChangedStars a Feminist Scifi roleplaying game set in a more hopeful future with some serious hurdles still ahead.”  The Kickstarter went live, or will go live, on the 27th of April. If you haven’t seen Pat’s amazing inked art then you are in for a treat, it bleeds classic sci-fi. You can pick up a PDF of the game for $15 and $40 will get you a hardback. As always we have links and in this instance, art in the show notes. The Shadow of Cthulhu is an art Kickstarter that is from Bryan Fyffe, an all around amazing artist, that is a friend of Former Keeper Jon 😉 and is a Disney artist. His campaign has a plethora of small and large art pieces of varying medium, from paper, to sculpture, to framed prints. The campaign has already been funded. Another Kickstarter that has already funded but that you might be interested in is The Bleakness. Billed as an “… uniquely immersive horror experience. Players assume the role of pilgrims, struggling to survive on an ancient road fraught with danger and mysteries. The Bleakness is a system, campaign setting, and detailed adventure arc bound in one text [with] gritty survival mechanics and the threat of the unknown [to] create a high-tension game like no other. There is still 1 day left on the Academies of the Arcane Troika! Kickstarter from Melsonian Arts Council. The book “is a comprehensive toolkit—it will work as well with any game where you might need magical schools, students possessing horrifying cosmic powers, and manipulative and petty faculty members.” I’ve backed this, because Troika!, and I think it might be an interesting drop-in to combine with the PowerWord zine that should be coming soon and some of the other little indie rpgs that I have, like Dee Sanction. Cthulhu in the Deep South is a shifting POV historical fiction podcast series that starts in the Antebellum South and continues through the Civil War and into  Reconstruction. They’ve just launched Book 5 which is about a carpetbagger getting mixed up in some cosmic horror. Our own Keeper Murph will be a guest on their interview feed on the 1st, but no idea when that will actually drop as of this recording, since it is in the future, but we are in the past. Timeslip problems… The Discord Plug We have our MUP Discord and we are all there! We invite all of our listeners to come and enjoy the community of Call of Cthulhu and horror gaming fans.  MU Discord server invite link: https://discord.gg/vNjEv9D  And thank you beaucoup to Murph for editing this episode. Patreon We have a Patreon! To back us you can click the button on the sidebar of our website, mu-podcast.com or head over to Patreon directly at www.patreon.com/mup! Thank you backers! We have two new Backers that we need to mention! Arjen Poutsma Al Smith! Al is a phenomenal person and an incredible GM. He’s in a bunch of horror communities and runs games often. So, if you see him running games, you won’t be disappointed to sit at his table.   And you can also help out the show by buying some merch from our Teepublic store!  Thanks so much for backing the show!! It is an article about a gang of “acrobatic book thieves” that pulled off a series of daring heists, and how they were eventually captured by law enforcement officials from across Europe.  The parallels between this and any Tome-driven scenario, such as Bookhounds, is easy to see. Main Topic In preparing for Jon’s final episode, the hosts reached out and asked Discord listeners for questions in an Ask Us Anything. We covered the following questions with more to follow next episode… If you could worship any Great Old One, which would it be? With all of the flavors of Lovecraftian gaming out there, is there a type of game or corner of the HPL universe that would make for innovative/ must play gaming? If you would receive a salary for a year and a reasonable budget for support (e.g. art, layout, tech support, audio equipment),  what gaming-related project would you work on for a year? What are you curious about right now? What is something that is true about gaming that almost no one agrees with you on? There have been some cool releases in the past few years based on settings established in other media.  What are some other IPs that are ripe for a ttrpg adaptation? What episode(s) of MUP are you the most proud of? We wish Jon the greatest of luck and success in his next adventures. Goodbye and goodnight Jon!

Main Topic Keeper Dave’s topic: Amidst the Ancient Trees by Matthew Sanderson and Mike Mason Available in the 7ed Keeper’s Handbook Good Stuff Glaaki and cultists in the remote mountains of Vermont = LOVE IT Want to update for a modern setting, great opportunity for FBI/Marshall/BATF tracking down kidnapper… Or remove the kidnapper element and turn it into a decades-old AWOL search that goes south when the feds run afoul of anti-gov preppers Has the potential to be a really sharp and tight 4-6 hour chase , open with the gun fight with the preppers?   Love the dreams that show up early and then become real when the party reaches the lake Needs Improvement Lots of actors, too many groups: cultists, artists, kidnappers, surveyors Just the vets and the artist colony, maybe preppers Keep the dreams and the jewel that the cultists have nearly removed Update Civil War vets to Vietnam war, hiding out and slowly recruiting artists to help them uncover Glaaki’s gem Update digging at lake to former artist colony just like in Campbell’s story, abandoned houses by the lake The extended chase is fundamentally a railroad and has inherent structural challenges – we could discuss on a whole episode The Final Word Lots of great potential, especially for one of my favorite GOO Include the Tomb Herd so the woods become this super creepy and recursive time loop I want to update for today, I love Glaaki by the lake, and I love the opportunity to update the Inhabitant by the Lake Plan to turn this into a con game that I can run over and over Keeper Jon’s topic: The Code, by Chris Lackey and Lynn Hardy This is a fantastic scenario that allows for lots of roleplaying as the house is explored It includes elements that can promote (unnecessary) player-versus-player conflicts It has a great red herring villain in the time-traveling bug people Keeper Jon encourages Keepers to add a Hound of Tindalos into the scenario… it doesn’t even have to attack anyone… just having it walk through a hallway will freak players out In all likelyhood, the players will want to try to use the time-traveling suit, which is the central item in this scenario… but without an accompanying spell from Yog-Sothoth, you can’t control the suit. Keeper Jon always kills every player that puts on the suit since it either launches them to the infinite end or beginning of time… and thus erases them from history Keeper Murph’s topic: Saturnine Chalice by Matthew Sanderson From the Dead Light and Other Dark Turns book from Chaosium. Make Veronica’s journal with the words fairly easy to find, then add in more marked items that can be mistakenly seen as part of the glyph. This should force them to either try multiples or make them solve the puzzles on several to make sure they get it. Remember that the 4 correct items are all of lead, so make sure that you mention that it is lead when they find it, perhaps the false ones are of wood, silver, gold, etc. You may even add in some extra squares of paper that have been filled out, and are floating around the house, not literally, as a red herring.

Murph saw on Reddit that painter Francois Baranger, who’s been illustrating the Lovecraft books being published by Free League Press, is currently finishing a secret project related to “The Call of Cthulhu,” (by which we assume the story, not the roleplaying game), and then he’ll be working on The Dunwich Horror which should be released in 2022.  DEATH IN SPACE is an upcoming science-fiction tabletop roleplaying game, where players take the roles of explorers and laborers looking for their next big score. MUP Ep 215 – Shadow Over Simpson

This episode, Keepers Murph and Dave speak with the talented and always enjoyable Julian Simpson, writer and director o BBC Radio4’s Shadow Over Innsmouth! The Campus Crier is where we keep all the mythos related news and info for the podcast, this episode was recorded on December 19th, 2020.  In your living room, no one can hear you screaming for joy. A new TV series set in the ALIEN universe is being developed for FX and Hulu by Fargo creator, Noah Hawley.  The funding campaign continues for the Lovecraft Arts & Science center. If you are a fan of this community, please consider donating or purchasing something from their online store. Every little bit helps.  Jon discovered a fan made online comic book, Batman: Eldritch. As the name implies, it blends Batman and the Cthulhu Mythos. It’s a fairly short read. The story’s not bad and the art is pretty cool looking. Very evocative for the subject matter. Check it out.  The Malleus Monstrorum hardcover two-volume slipcase is now available from the Chaosium website! This is a beast, (pun intended)! Chaosium also released a short YouTube video that displays the new slipcase edition of this immense bestiary.  It looks like a production company, Full Moon, is looking to create a television series called Miskatonic U which will center around the university and the town of Arkham, Massachusetts. According to a Screen Rant article, it will be structured like the Stephen King series, Castle Rock. So far, there’s no indication on when this series would launch or who would be carrying it.  Sponsor We want to thank Noble Knight Games for returning to sponsor our show.
