The Role of the Thymus in Life Extension – a Conversation with Dr. Gregory Fahy - Episode 61

On this episode of Living Beyond 120, Mark and Dr. Gladden welcome Dr. Gregory Fahy, cryobiologist and biogerontologist, back onto the show. They start by discussing how the human body is designed to eventually make itself obsolete, with cell senescence, but the system can be hacked to increase longevity. Dr. Fahy describes the crucial role that the thymus gland plays in immunity. After puberty, the thymus starts to wither and die as we approach our 40s. For humans, this doesn't seem have a massive impact until reaching one's 60s, when the ability to recognize and fight infections starts to steeply decline. Dr. Fahy regrew his own thymus with human growth hormone, so he used this experiment as a baseline for dosage on the TRIM trial with 9 other volunteers. He describes the protocols and challenges of this trial, as well as the incredible results documented with this first study. They also discuss the next trial Dr. Fahy is planning soon, TRIM X, to further examine the success of human growth hormone on regrowing the thymus and the ways it affects the age of the body as a whole. Before wrapping up, Dr. Fahy shares a number of other exciting studies taking place to reverse aging. They discuss how these various treatments could possibly work together in the future, as well as the balance that will need to be struck with these sorts of anti-aging treatments. About the guest: Dr. Fahy earned his B.S. from the University of California at Irvine in 1972 and his Ph.D. from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977 for work on basic aspects of cryobiology. He spent the next 18 years developing methods for preserving whole organs at cryogenic temperatures at the American Red Cross in Maryland. In 1980, he conceived of preserving organs by vitrification. He published the first proof of principle of this concept in Nature in 1985 using mouse embryos as a model system, an event that led to the wide use of vitrification in academic and commercial animal husbandry as well as in human assisted reproduction. n 1995, he won the Grand Prize for Medicine from INPEX for his invention of the first effective computer-operated equipment for perfusing organs with cryoprotective agents. The same year, he left the Red Cross to become Chief Scientist of two biotechnology companies and the Head of the Tissue Cryopreservation Section of the Transfusion and Cryopreservation Research Program at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1998, he became the Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of 21st Century Medicine, where he invented several new principles in cryopreservation that have been extraordinarily effective in practical applications ranging from tissues to whole organs. Dr. Fahy's efforts have recently raised the question of whether human suspended animation might be an attainable goal that could allow the human species to survive in deep time as a result of enabling migration from the earth to other habitats in the cosmos. Dr. Fahy is a sought-after speaker and problem-solver. He is on the Board of Directors of several organizations concerned with cryopreservation or aging, serves on the Editorial Board of Rejuvenation Research, and has served as a reviewer for numerous journals and granting bodies. He has over 20 patents in fields related to cryopreservation, aging, transplantation, metabolic protection, and the reversal of autoimmunity and immunosenescence, and has many publications in the fields of cryobiology, aging, and nanotechnology. He currently serves as Director for Intervene Immune, Inc. Learn more about the projects they are working on and how to become a part of their clinical trials at http://interveneimmune.com/.

Emotional Stress & a Deserving Mindset – a Conversation with Dr. Josh Wagner - Episode 59

This week, Mark and Dr. Gladden kick off the show by discussing Rapamycin, a drug traditionally used as an anti-rejection drug for organ transplant recipients. New studies are showing that it can possibly extend lifespan but can also suppress the immune system. Dr. Gladden shares that he is planning on testing small quantities of this drug on himself and monitoring how his body reacts. Next, they are joined by Dr. Josh Wagner, renowned chiropractor and author of the book You Deserve It, to talk about the damaging effects of mental and emotional stress. He shares that, in many cases, people have trouble finding happiness because they don't truly believe they deserve to be happy. When this happens, they create mental and emotional blocks that keep them from obtaining what they strive for. Dr. Wagner continues with insight into the ways that media tends to lend a hand in creating additional emotional stress. When we start to compare ourselves or our accomplishments with other people's, it steals the joy from our own lives. The group chats about the habit of "unplugging" from the outside world by turning off their phones or disabling notifications to keep social disruptions to a minimal. They conclude with discussing how to overcome feelings of inadequacy in order to better handle emotional and mental stress. By pinpointing the areas in our lives in which we feel undeserving – and then surrounding ourselves with people who also practice deserving mindsets – we can begin the shift out of a mindset of unworthiness.

Longevity, Fasting, & Molecular Hydrogen — A Conversation with Alex Tarnava - Episode 57

On this episode, Mark and Dr. Gladden welcome Alex Tarnava, CEO at NMW and Drink HRW, to chat about a myriad of topics pertaining to health and longevity. They start off by discussing the trend of diets that mimic fasting and what outcome they have on our health. Because fasting "resets" our bodies, it has been shown to have great effect in aiding such things as DNA repair, gut health, and autophagy. Alex gives insight into the correlation between fasting and cancer treatments. He explains how fasting leads to a lack of sugar in the body, which can actually weaken cancer cells, making chemotherapy and other treatments more effective at targeting cancerous cells. Next, the group moves on to discussing molecular hydrogen and the incredible studies that are gaining popularity and notoriety. Molecular hydrogen can help to mitigate the biggest contributors to aging, which is making it appealing to those striving for longevity. It has also been shown to reduce liver fat and improve conditions associated with mitochondrial impairments, diabetes, and metabolic issues. The uses of hydrogen are becoming so renowned that even athletes have begun to utilize it to help their bodies respond better to exercise and increase their overall energy. Special Guest Alex Tarnava Alex has a passion for health, fitness, learning and self-improvement. After a lifetime of sports activity, he was shocked to find he'd developed osteoarthritis while still in his physical prime. Unwilling to give up his way of life, he dosed himself regularly with Naproxen to counter the pain and discomfort he lived with every day. Over time, the drug's effects lessened while the gastro-intestinal side-effects increased. Searching for alternatives, Alex scoured medical journals looking for emerging treatments that would help, reading hundreds of published articles in the process. This was where he happened upon the potential of molecular hydrogen. Skeptical at first, the more he read the more interested he became in its potential. Motivated by pain and the hope he garnered from his research, he began to experiment with ways of replicating the dosage levels being used successfully across the scientific community. After a time, he realized he needed real expertise and sought out Dr. Richard Holland's counsel. After a thrilling ride through discovery, multiple experimentation, and finally success, Drink HRW open cup hydrogen tablets were finally ready for the public. Alex remains committed to bringing relief through Rejuvenation and several other planned products to not just other sufferers, but anyone interested in preventative health and longevity. Together, his team wants to ensure that everyone has the chance to experience the tremendous benefits of daily use of molecular hydrogen in a safe and effective manner. Diabetes and Longevity – a Discussion with Lyle Haugen - Episode 56

On this episode, Mark and Dr. Gladden are joined by Lyle Haugen, a registered nutrition health coach who has been living with Type 1 diabetes. They discuss both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and how they affect the body. They also talk about how other responses in the body affect diabetes. They consider effective ways that people have been managing and even living well with the disease through proper diet, exercise and medication. Lyle discusses his own health regimen that has helped him reverse many of his diabetes-related conditions and get his life back, along with some success he's had with his clients. In order to get to this point, Lyle had to defy the recommendations of his doctors, which seemed to be only focused on managing in the short term rather than getting better. It's very important to understand your own body, and the most common tests done in doctors' offices today won't tell you all of the details. More comprehensive testing is needed to determine if you're on the road to becoming diabetic and what kind of diet your body might need to prevent it. About the guest: Lyle Haugen a Type 1 diabetic and, now, a registered nutrition health coach. He was diagnosed in 1985, a week after surviving an industrial explosion at a natural gas facility. For 25+ years, he followed all the various advice given by my doctors and nutritionist. None of it allowed him to have consistent, controllable and reliable blood sugars. Inevitably, he began to get many of the conditions associated with Type 1, like eye issues, Crohn's/colitis and diabetic gastroparesis. As these conditions mounted, he grew frustrated and angry with the advice he was given. He decided to take control back and figure it out for himself. He trained in nutrition and health coaching, read books, tried everything he could, took meticulous notes and, finally, he figured out a system, protocol and diet that gave him his life back. He now sleeps through the night and has great energy. He's not afraid to travel or experience life. The freedom he's gained by taking back his blood sugar control has been unimaginable. His associated conditions have been getting better and better, and his health is no longer sliding down a slippery slope. With years of diabetes experience and training as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, he's developed a simple yet effective system for all those who live with Type 1. The experiences of his clients and himself demonstrate that balancing those sugars will net improvements in your health, resolve many conditions and help you awaken to a new life. Haugen realized his goal of creating a website specifically for Type 1 diabetics, https://type1simplified.com/. His adult daughter Shanice helped him refine a recipe on the website for energy bars. He currently resides in the beautiful town of Creston, British Columbia.
