I wanted to have Kimberly on the show to discuss fashion history because it's a different kind of "pre-loved" -- we love these clothes we see in museums in a different way from their original owners. We talk about fashion history in a museum context, how a piece of clothing goes from being "vintage" and owned by a person to belonging to a museum collection, and some -- of the many! -- fascinating stories of pieces she's worked with. Pre-Loved Podcast: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena Hey, vintage lovers, I'm Emily Stochl and this is Pre-Loved Podcast -- the show about rad vintage style and guests you'll want to go thrifting with. Thanks for joining us! Last week, we heard from Liz Rickett, co-founder of the OR Foundation, and we had a conversation that I hope brought some nuance to your understanding of the global second-hand industry, including the industry in Accra, Ghana. Today we're joined by four Ghanians: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena. All have different stories to tell in the second-hand sphere. First up, you'll hear from David Adams. David's family has run a second-hand clothing business in Kantamanto Market in Ghana for over thirty years. After finishing his degree, David took the helm of the business in 2014. He told us a bit about his business at Kantamanto, and what his day-to-day as a reseller looks like. Since David's family has been in this industry for so long, I also wanted to get his perspective on how things have changed in the last 30 years. You'll hear all this and more coming up on the show. Then, we have Sammy. Sammy is graduate of Radford University of Fashion, and today he's a fashion designer and member of the Board of Fashion Ghana. His sustainable streetwear brand utilizes upcycled clothing from Kantamanto Market. Finally, we have Yayra and Kwamena of The Revival and Afro District. These two are vintage wizards. They have spent years sourcing gems from Kantamanto for resale, repair, upcycling and styling. Over the last year they have focused their efforts on promoting a culture of upcycling using clothing that cannot be sold in Kantamanto. Let's hear from them now Let's dive right in! Liz comes from a background in the fashion industry, working as a consultant for several fair trade and eco-fashion startups, working in vintage boutiques, and producing sustainable fashion shows. But she was moved to develop her unique path in the fashion industry when she witnessed the undervaluation of designers and their creations at the highest levels of the industry. She saw all around her that the dominant consumer relationship with fashion is one of excess and exploitation, and wanted to manifest alternatives. Through her work with The OR Foundation Liz has traced that undervaluation through to the secondhand clothing trade, specifically in Accra, Ghana where The OR Foundation has concentrated an intensive multi-year research effort into Kantamanto Market, one of the largest secondhand clothing markets in the world. Through this research project called Dead White Man's Clothes, Liz and her collaborators have expanded perspectives across borders and beyond single stories to show the deep complexities of a global trade in secondhand clothes that serves as both an unsung tool of global waste management and the future of sustainable fashion. On today's show, we really dive into Kantamanto, and the industry in Accra, "global recycling," the concept of waste management, colonialism, agency, equity, and more. And be sure to tune in next week, because we will hear more perspectives and voices from Kantamanto, and you don't want to miss it! Let's dive right in!
