159. Rachel Hollis & The Rose-Colored Glass Ceiling: Part 1

A Rachel Hollis deep dive. In this episode, Kate dives into the recent controversy surrounding the self-help empire of Rachel Hollis, who is a wildly successful motivational speaker, podcast host, CEO of Rise (and formerly HollisCo), among other things, but is probably most well-known for being the author of NYT best sellers "Girl, Wash Your Face" and "Girl, Stop Apologizing." Kate starts with analysis of the troubling dialogue and caption of her now-deleted video and also now-deleted first apology last week. Then, she discusses the problem with "made for more" culture, especially in the context of the RISE conference and support of the MLM industry that preys on vulnerable people via her prosperity gospel-adjacent business coaching. Then Kate talks through her journey with what she's found troubling about Hollis' content, detailing how she thinks it fits in the broader 2010s self-help zeitgeist of #girlboss culture, and shares her journey in how these movements have shaped her view of feminism and empowerment. In the second episode, Kate will read more listener-submitted emails, wanting to give her take so she can open up the floor to give her yours. Warm Vanilla Sugar High

This week, Kate snorkels through a variety of topics, with the core theme being overlooked and/or forgotten internet drama. She discusses Cinnamon Toast Crunch gate, sexism in Consumer Packaged Goods, talks about the role of cancel culture in the Bible, meanders through music with her favorite SAT words, talks about how you know influencers have 'made it,' then dives into one of her favorite internet communities: Candle Culture. From funny/forgotten candle rant youtubers, to her perceptions of Bath & Body Works vs. Yankee Candle vs. Dyptique, to the impact of COVID on the candle industry, aggressive reviews, pretentious descriptions and more -- it's safe to say Kate spends a lot of time *waxing* poetic in this candle-forward episode. She also talks about one of her favorite stories that yielded an exciting period of internet mystery and drama surrounding an epic pop star catfish. Overall, fun, lighthearted, and hopefully fast moving-- Enjoy! Trauma-rama

This week, Kate salutes one of the most iconic magazine series of our time: Seventeen's Trauma-rama. First, she discusses Meghan & Harry's upcoming interview, then does a brief Are You Afraid of the Dark detour, followed by reading from old Seventeen & YM magazines she bought off of eBay from their juiciest embarrassing stories sections. Following that, she reads crowd-sourced 'things that are embarrassing for no reason' anecdotes from listeners and discusses the discomfort of, well, just generally existing. Enjoy! Twinkle, Twinkle, S0cc3rA11Star

This week, Kate does a continuation of last week's episode (Pussycat Dull) since more listeners submitted their tales of cringeworthy attempts to make their crush jealous. They somehow keep getting better. In between stories many of Kate's own anecdotes and insights are shared, from her being cast as a Valley Girl to a broader discussion of sexism in how women are judged for the way they speak. There's also discussions of things like the 00s 'mean girl' culture, a revisiting of Why Men Love Bitches, an argument for not striving for effortlessness, and an update on Childless Millennial, to name a few.
