Yet Warner Bros wanted - and got - a very different film to 1992's Batman Returns. It went through many writers, had a maverick director, and nearly ended up with Brad Pitt in the lead. Few saw the sizeable success of Joe Pesci-headlined comedy My Cousin Vinny coming, meanwhile.
