You Can’t Flex On Me Luv, I’m Proud of You ft. Kimberly Drew
Over the past 7 years, writer and curator Kimberly Drew has unabashedly made a name for herself within the world of art and fashion. She’s already interviewed icons like Lupita Nyong'o, and Tina Lawson. She’s served bold looks on the runways of Chromat, and Collina Strada. Looking back on her career, Drew notes that “if I had come in with less love [for art], I wouldn’t have been as successful.” That love first began in her hometown of Orange, New Jersey- a community that Kimberly describes as “culturally rich”. It then carried her to Smith College, where she studied African American Studies and Art History. Finally, it brought her to THE Thelma Golden (AKA “Beyonce of the art world”) at the Studio Museum in Harlem. From there, Drew went on to create the extremely successful Tumblr blog, Black Contemporary Art, which is solely dedicated to highlighting black artists and landed a dream role managing social for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, before going out to do her own thing full-time. Listen to this episode, and you’ll realize why the witty and enlightened Ms.Drew is adored by so many. Grown Women Talk ft Angela Yee
This episode was surreal for me because I’ve listened to Angela Yee on the radio for over a decade. When it comes to representing hip hop and the culture, Yee has been, and continues to be one of the best radio hosts in the game. Growing up, Yee was a self-proclaimed “terror” who loved to be “out with her girls” but talking to people and giving advice was something that came naturally to her. After graduating from Wesleyan University with an English degree, Yee brought that talent to Eminem’s Shade 45 radio station. Within a few years, she landed her own morning show and in 2010 she became a part of The Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM, a show that has facilitated some of the best conversations around music and pop culture of all time. When Yee isn’t with her hosts Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy, she is hosting her own podcast, Lip Service, investing in real estate running her juice bar, & more. We talk about making time for yourself, running, juicing, how to have self-confidence & so much more. Thank you Angela for sharing your story with me. A Mississippi Beauty Queen & PR Boss ft. Savannah Engel
If there’s one thing that PR queen Savannah Engel has mastered, it’s the art of conversation. “Throw me into a room with 300 people I don’t know,” Engel says, “give me two hours, and I will know every single person there, and be their best friend.” You might argue that the key to such confidence lies in Savannah’s undeniable Southern charm. Her roots in the Mississippi Delta, combined with her mother’s fashionable influence made for a keen eye and impeccable communication skills. That being said, fashion PR wasn’t always the plan. In fact, while studying at Southern Methodist University (SMU), Engel had a deep passion for refugee studies and legal work. It wasn’t until she landed an internship in New York with Michael Kors that everything changed. From there, Engel went on to work for Barney’s and First Access Entertainment. Then, in 2017, she finally founded her own firm, Savannah Engel PR. In a matter of only two years, Engel has taken on clients such as Markarian, Pyer Moss, Cherry LA, Missoni, and many more. All in all, she’s a boss, and she’s a force to be reckoned with. Part of Something Way Bigger ft. Akili King
If you’re wondering what the new guard of beauty editorial looks like, look no further than Akili King. The 23-year old Chicago native and NYU Gallatin graduate has published a book of her own poems (titled AWAKENING), and worked for brands like The FADER, Milk Makeup, and Fashion Fair. All that being said, her current position as the Beauty Editorial Assistant at Vogue is “still pretty surreal” because, how could it not be?! Between making a name for herself within the beauty industry, modelling, DJ-ing, and practicing yoga, Akili is undoubtedly one to watch.Links to Products/Resources Mentioned: HAIR: Soultanicals Fro Despair, Rahua Cream Wax, DevaCurl Supercurl Coconut Curl Styler, Oribe Moisture & Control Line, Pattern Beauty Hydration Shampoo, Pattern Beauty Heavy ConditionerMAKEUP: Boy De Chanel Eyebrow Pencil, Sappho Essential Foundation, Milk Makeup High Volume Kush Mascara SKINCARE: Klur Face Mask, Caudalie Deep Cleansing Exfoliator, Epara Skincare, Caudalie Facial, Heyday Facials, Dermasaa (Samantha Mims) Facials, Silk Eye Mask, Gel Eye Mask, RESOURCES: Naked Beauty Amazon Store, AWAKENING, Michelle Phan (The Cut), AndreasChoice Drome, Kirby Jean-Raymond (Medium), @v93ooFollow Akili on IG: @akili_ Stay in touch with me: @brookedevard Join the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanet Rate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on Hosted on Acast. Feed Your Face Ft April Gargiulo, Founder of Vintner's Daughter
“What I was cleaning my house with was cleaner than what I was putting on my face. I had my head in the sand like a lot of people.” — my guest, April Gargiulo, on the genesis of her natural, performance-driven skincare line: Vintner’s Daughter//April and I discuss how her background in Napa Valley’s wine making process, allowed her to see this gap in the skincare market – she took this knowledge and molded it into a product to help people around the world achieve their best skin. The coveted Vintner's Daughter serum and essence transforms skin and hearing the backstory behind the 22 natural ingredients, it's all clear why this works as well as it does. April never compromises quality for profit, which is what makes her totally unique in today's beauty industry.April’s journey with skincare dates back to developing cystic acne in high school and giving every luxury product a try. After some time she started to develop her first product (the process was rocky pitching one SKU) but she stuck to her North Star and successfully created products that continue to sell out within days of being restocked. I LOVED talking to April and getting to know what has inspired this game-changing, plant-powered skincare and I know you will too.Products/Resources Mentioned: Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum, Vintner’s Daughter Active Treatment Essence, Alpyn Creamy Bubbling Cleanser, NuFace (electrical stimulation of facial muscles), Face Gym , Endermologie Body Treatment (Spa Radiance) Infiorie solid fragrance, Brother Vellies (April's shoe obsession), CAP Beauty , Onda BeautyStay in touch with me: @brookedevardFollow April & Vintner's Daughter Join the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanetRate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on Apple Thanks for all the love and support. Listen To This Before Your Next Manicure - Leftovers Ft Sylvie Macmillan
“Try colors you wouldn’t normally wear. It’s not permanent, it’s not a tattoo. And you might realize that actually, that green or that yellow goes with your clothes so much better than the red or nude does.” - Sylvie Macmillan on how to step out of comfort zones & try new colors for your nails. I had to share some extras from my conversation in London with super-talented nail technician Sylvie Macmillan. We talk about the debilitating effect of too many options at the nail salon, SNS dipping powder (and how hygienic it may or may not be), holographic nails, matte nails, and choosing a color and sticking to it with conviction!
