Doechii's Beauty Team On Pushing Creative Boundaries
If Doechii’s Paris Fashion Week looks had you obsessed, this episode is for you! I had the pleasure of talking with her makeup artist Chelsea Uchenna and hairstylist Malcolm Marquez about their collaboration with the icon in the making. Despite growing up on opposite sides of the world, both artists had innate creative sensibilities, decided early on that they would have careers in beauty, and were inspired by iconic queer and trans communities. In their respective interviews, Chelsea and Malcolm discuss how they came to be part of Doechii’s team and how they help one another push their creative boundaries. They also dish on the behind-the-scenes chaos that resulted in one of the most iconic series of Paris Fashion Week looks ever. While each interview revealed unique differences in their approaches to beauty, they both underscored how important mutual respect is when visionaries collaborate. Tune in as we discuss:Chelsea’s tips for creating flawless dark-skinned glamHow drag queen’s beauty and stage makeup influences themThe engineering process behind Doechii’s connected braids Why we need to see dark-skinned Black women pushing their creative boundaries with color and styleTheir beauty ethos of showing things that aren’t meant to be seenProducts Mentioned:MakeupFresh Oil Infused TonerCharlotte Tilbury Glow TonerKiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Hydrating Serum | All Day Moisturizer | Kiehl’s Avocado Eye CreamDanessa Myricks Universal Blurring Balm | Water Powder SerumFenty Lip BalmLancome Teint Idole FoundationPat McGrath ConcealerHairghd Unplugged Flat IronNeat Crowns Braided WigsRate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on Apple Thanks for all the love and support. Beauty and DEI: Where Do We Go From Here
In this episode of Naked Beauty, I dive into the ongoing battle for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as it relates to beauty. This conversation is multifaceted, so I knew we had to talk with some industry experts who have been championing inclusion throughout their whole careers. I talked with my mother, Jerry Devard, to gain her insights from a corporate viewpoint, as well as Sir John, global artist and advocate for multicultural beauty, and Kendra Bracken Ferguson, a venture capitalist committed to supporting black founders. Together, we explore the rollback of DEI initiatives, the significance of mental health as we live through unprecedented times, and actionable steps for supporting black-owned brands and businesses.Shop this episode on ShopMyShelfLearn more about BEAMRate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on AppleThanks for all the love and support. Six Things I Learned When I Gave Up Social Media
Hi beauties! It feels so good to be back from maternity leave. So much has changed since our last episode of 2024 – my daughter Jade has made her arrival and we’re all adjusting to being a family of four. When I went on maternity leave, I chose to take a 6-week break from social media so I could really soak in this chapter in our family’s life. I learned so much in my time away from social media, and I wanted to kick off the first episode of 2025 on the six biggest benefits I experienced from being offline. After a career spent on the internet, it was amazing to see what being offline did to my sense of creativity, my ability to engage with more long-form media, and my relationship to time. I’m excited to be back on Instagram and TikTok with some new limits, but most of all I’m excited to be back behind the mic.Support Austin and John, who lost their home in the LA fires Shop my recommendations from this episode Find Naked Beauty at Credo Rate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on Apple Thanks for all the love and support. A Deep Dive on Beauty Copywriting with Writers from Dieux, Sol de Janeiro, and Glossier
In today’s episode of Naked Beauty, I spoke to three writers from top beauty brands: Glossier, Dieux, and Sol de Janeiro for a deep dive into all things beauty copywriting. In the crowded landscape of beauty, tone, and voice are key ways for brands to break through the noise.
