This week Brittany of "The Pet Girl" joined us via zoom, generously giving her time and expertise on the current state of prong collar bans in the state of Queensland Australia We also discussed Brittany's extensive past as a dog trainer, and how she is always on the search to further her own development as a dog industry professional From Brittany's website:   "If you asked me 6 years ago what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I had absolutely no idea; I just knew that animals HAD to be a part of it.    As a long time dog owner, I had always taken a responsible approach to my dogs’ health and wellbeing, opting for a more natural approach to their lifestyle and more specifically their diets.   I found that I was always asking questions beyond the norm and I quickly realised that a lot of the questions I was asking, nobody really knew the answers to. Panos answers a question from Nellie in regards to what to do when she is playing fetch with her dog when another dog approaches and her dog causing a scene. There are a few remedies to this situation, prevention being the best cure. But the most important thing is, when your rewarding your dog with the ball, you should not allow anyone to take that reinforcement away. It is a 2 player game (you and your dog). If your dog is fussy, it is most likely caused by you and usually because you love your dog so much. Panos sees fussy dogs regularly and shares some advice to help get your dog eating his food again. Dogs are not grazing animals and should not have access to food all day long. Stop feeding from scraps at dinner time etc. Provide windows of opportunity for your dog to understand there is a time and place when food is available and after a set time the opportunity will go away. A good dog trainer knows the next 10-15 moves in what they are trying to achieve with their dog. This is the concept of "beginning with the end in mind". Fundamentals may seem "boring" sometimes, but they are all setups for the next stages of training. Excellence is mastery of the basics! This is an old saying which refers to the fact that people can ultimately never be forced to actually follow through with anything they are recommended to do, even if they asked for the advice in the first place. As professional dog trainers we are often asked by pet owners to come in and give our paid opinions on a wide range of behavioural topics relating to dogs. We always try to put our clients' and their dogs' best interests at the forefront when we are giving advice. However this doesn't guarantee the advice will be received as was intentioned, nor that the client will follow through with the training after the dog trainer has left.
