Ukraine, Russia, and Just War Theory [Ep.82]

In this episode, Logos dives into a sensitive yet profound discussion. With tensions between Ukraine and Russia elevating, questions naturally arise in many people's minds: Shouldn't countries be more aggressive towards Russia? Is war justifiable? Is war morally permissible? Is not pacifism the solution to the rising tensions? These questions prompt us to enter into a discussion within the realm of moral theology. Throughout the life of the ancient Church, justification for war wasn't much of a question. The Church has had the criterion we discuss in this episode, but modern warfare has made the idea of a 'just war' much more complex. Yes, the Church would say that war can be justified, but it needs to be qualified and "fleshed out," as it were. As a starting point, however, one ought to understand the principles by which the Church assesses such situations as the spiritual mother of the world; this discussion lays out said the criterion for "Just War" and discusses and applies some of the criteria to the current situation developing Europe amongst Ukraine and Russia. Again, it is complex, and rather than get into the politics or social impacts; we simply try to lay out the Church's moral guidelines when discussing such sensitive topics. In the guidelines, we can always find consolation. Enjoy this episode! Like and subscribe! Michel Foucault - Truth, Power, and Sexuality [Ep.81]

Guys, on this week's episode, Logos takes on a hugely influential thinker of our times: Michel Foucault. Many people have not been exposed to Foucault by name, but they have been exposed to the language of 'Oppressor' Vs. 'Oppressed,' Institutionalized oppressors, Human de-constructivism, the need for a sexual revolution, the phrase "knowledge is power," and the sorts. Foucault's philosophical spirit is indispensable to understanding our world today. Whether one agrees or disagrees with everything our culture proposes as socially beneficial, politically stable, or culturally acceptable, figures like Foucault are essential to understand the 'power' (to use Foucault's language) behind modern man's thought process. In one sense, his 'discourse' is employed all around us today. We are not experts on Foucault, but we seek to give our audience a general scope of some of his works and basic ideas. To be abundantly clear, we are neither disciples nor promotors of Foucault. Still, we see him as a person whose hermeneutic provides a gateway by which the common person can engage with the forces possessing our friends and family. For the audio recording of this episode and more like them, check us out on our website, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, TikTok, Instagram, and Patreon! Website: logos-podcast.comYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCqauK7TPfOwe80B-ckOeelQSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3PCPWBvNcAbptX17PzlC2x?si=KYvG1NLjRii1a7Rvj5NQsQApple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/logos/id1560191231Patreon: http://patreon.com/logospodcastInstagram: @logos.podTIkTok: @logospodcastSome of the sources used in this episode:[Primary sources of The Order Of Things, The Archaeology Of Knowledge, The Discourse On Language, and The History Of Sexuality]http://commons.princeton.edu/shakespeares-language/wp-content/uploads/sites/41/2017/09/Foucault-The-Discourse-on-Language.pdfhttp://individual.utoronto.ca/bmclean/hermeneutics/foucault_suppl/DOL_outline.htmhttps://plato.stanford.edu/entries/foucault/https://www.vox.com/features/2019/11/11/18273141/postmodernism-donald-trump-lyotard-baudrillardhttps://youtu.be/BBJTeNTZtGUhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i63_kAw3WmE&t=320shttps://youtu.be/Py_4NBfCDnUSupport the show

Beer, Whiskey, and Jesus Christ [Ep.80]

In this episode, Logos takes on a simple, yet, at times, uncanny conversation. We discuss whether drinking is a sin and some of the "whoops and poops" (pros and cons) of drinking. Weaved into the conversation is virtue ethics as well as some history of the Church's relationship with the 'good drink' of ancient and modern times. As we prepared for this episode, we found a lot of interesting facts with such historicity. If you stick around until the end, we give you ingredients to make the "cocktail" of the day, as the book Drinking With The Saints recommends. Sit/stand, pour yourself a glass of your favorite drink, and enjoy this episode!Support the show

Exorcisms and Witchcraft (w/ an Exorcist) [Ep.79]

In this episode, Logos podcast takes on a profound topic. As Halloween approaches, we found it fitting to pry into the culture's fascination with the 'dark side', with things like Oujia Boards, 'spiritual crystals,' American Horror Story, Tom Brady's Wife, Jeffrey Dahmer, and the sorts. I’m doing so, naturally converging into thinks like Exorcisms, Cult Vs. Occult, Angels and Demons, and Witchcraft. But, ending, always ending, on a note of Hope in the name of Jesus Christ. To ease and inform the conversation, however, we bring in a special guest: Fr. Brett Brennan. Fr. Brett is an experienced priest, an author of a few books, an exorcist, a spiritual director, and a psychologist. But above all, he is a southern man! How great thou art. Fr. Brett helps us 'break into' man's curiosity for the "dark side." Guys, you are not going to want to miss this episode! Enjoy and, as always, God Bless. Support the show

Sturgill Simpson: Psychedelics and Christianity [Ep. 78]

In this episode, Logos takes on a reflective attitude on a popular, now older, but still relevant song: Turtles All The Way Down. This song was composed by Sturgill Simpson and is very contemplative. But, we also feel that it is a good song to discuss and analyze. By doing so, we can abstract the good and critique the bad. We do not condone the actions of Sturgill in this song (particular usage of drugs),  but it does talk about Psychedelics, Love, God, the devil, and "reptile aliens".  So, we discuss these matters too. We enjoyed recording this episode a lot, we hope you enjoy listening to it!Check us out and support us on our website, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, TikTok, Instagram, and/or Patreon! Website: logos-podcast.comYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UCqauK7TPfOwe80B-ckOeelQSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3PCPWBvNcAbptX17PzlC2x?si=KYvG1NLjRii1a7Rvj5NQsQApple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/logos/id1560191231Patreon: http://patreon.com/logospodcastInstagram: @logos.podTIkTok: @logospodcastSupport the show

The Inquisition and Galileo (W/ Medieval Historian) [Ep. 77]

In this episode, we discuss a big historical thing in the Church: The Inquisition. We discuss what the popular idea of it is, what it is, and what it is not. This discussion is necessary in a world where the vast majority of the Church's life is informed by people outside of it. Our guest, Dr. Eric Graff, brings in a qualified perspective to the subject matter. Dr. Graff has received several degrees, one of which is a Doctorate from the University of Toronto, Canada and another a licentiate from the Pontifical Academy of Medieval Studies. Dr. Graff is a medieval historian and such was deemed more qualified to be brought into this episode to discuss the inquisition as well as some of its famous association with Galileo. Guys, enjoy this episode. We did. God Bless and support us on any of our platforms! We are now on Patreon, consider giving and sharing our content. Support the show

Your Life Has Purpose [Ep. 76]

In this episode, Logos seeks to draw you into conversation about the meaning of life. Is there meaning? If so, where is it found? If not, what does that mean? Another question: What happens when the modern sciences no longer answer the deep questions of man? The answer seems simple: follow the religious instinct which leads you to creation's Creator. After all, man is a religious being. Tune into this episode and listen to our conversation. We hope it draws you into closer union with Jesus Christ, the person who defines, guides, and loves all things. God Bless!Support the show

Shia LaBeouf: Reaction to Conversion [Ep. 73]

In Word on Fire's most recent episode, Bishop Barron brought on famous (or infamous) actor Shia LaBeouf to discuss his recent conversion to Catholicism and his soon to be released movie about Padre Pio, a famous saint of the Catholic Church. Logos takes the time to talk about some of the interview's "whoops and poops", positives and negatives. It is hard to be critical with someone coming into the Church, but it is always good to have a level head with these things. Anyways, enjoy our conversation about it. Thanks be to God for another man entering the communion with Our Lord through His Church. Let’s pray for Shia! Support the show
