Deuteronomy 29:2a, 9, 12-18 (NIV)Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do. You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God, a covenant the LORD is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today. You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here.You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold. Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to us all through Jesus Christ.” 2. Jesus followed the covenant perfectly and fulfilled the curse of the covenant by his death. Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | March 17, 2024 Exodus 34:6-7 (NIV)And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; …” Romans 3:25-26 (NIV)God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Hebrews 10:10-14 (NIV) “The man who has faith is the man who is no longer looking at himself, and no longer looking to himself. He no longer looks at anything he once was. He does not look at what he is now. He does not look at what he hopes to be … He looks entirely to the Lord Jesus Christ and his finished work, and he rests on that alone.”— Martyn Lloyd-Jones 1 John 4:16-19 (NIV)And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.We love because he first loved us. Reflection Questions: What was something that stuck out to you from the sermon? Do you tend to view God as more loving/compassionate or more just/wrathful? Explain. Why do you think that is? How does the cross of Jesus show us the fullness of God’s LOVE and the fullness of His JUSTICE? We receive justification by faith. How do you define faith? How can faith actually become a “work” of righteousness to us? How would you paraphrase the quote(above) by Martyn Lloyd-Jones? It is the OBJECT of our faith and not the AMOUNT of our faith that save us. Agree or disagree? Explain. If we are justified freely (without cost or cause) what is our motivation to obey and follow Jesus? Why is fear of punishment or judgment not the motivation Jesus wants from us? Read 1 John 4:16-19 (above). Christianity is not at it’s core message a religion. It is a gospel (good news). It is not what we DO for God but what God has DONE for us. Good news is meant to be shared. What motivates you to share the good news with people in your world? What hinders you from sharing the good news with others? How can you overcome these barriers? Who will you invite to be part of our Easter gatherings where we celebrate the good news of Jesus? Bob Schwahn | Lead Pastor | March 10, 2024   Romans 1:17 (NIV) For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”   Romans 3:20 (NIV) Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.   BUT NOW… BUT (conjunction): Used to introduce a phrase contrasting what has already been mentioned.   Romans 3:21-24 (NIV) But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.   IMPUTE: To ascribe something to someone by virtue of a similar quality in another…   Philippians 3:4-7 (NIV) though I myself have reasons for such confidence.  If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the law, faultless. Lewis, Mere Christianity   Reflection Questions: What accomplishments in this life are you especially proud of?  What would you want to put on your “life resume”?What are examples in our culture of the worldview that believes our resume/performance record is what validates or justifies our existence?How can this resume/performance worldview leak into our view of God and how we relate to Him?If you were to die tonight and stand before God and He were to ask you, ‘Why should I let you into heaven?”  What would you say? How does the answer to this question clarify what we believe about what God expects from us? Explain.   The word BUT is a word of contrast. What is being contrasted in Romans 3:21 from what Paul has been saying up to that point?  What makes this transition so important and meaningful?In Philippians (above) Paul talks about his outstanding “resume”.  Why would Paul call those very good resume items “loss” or “worthless”?  How does an understanding of the Gospel (good news) cause us to regard our resume as worthless? Romans 3:24 (NIV) and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.   Define justified/justification.   Define Grace.   How does free justification by grace remove both fear of condemnation and pride in our resume?  If we experience fear of condemnation or pride in our moral record, how does that show we don’t understand or aren’t experiencing the gospel?Read 1 John 4:16-19 (above). Why is fear of condemnation not a proper motivation to follow Jesus and obey Him?  Should we try to motivate people to follow and obey Jesus out of fear of condemnation?  Why do you think many people try to do this?How would your life change if you were living out of a deep understanding of the gospel?  How has your life changed? For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin. The Evidence: Romans 3:10-18 (NIV)As it is written:“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands;there is no one who seeks God. (Ecclesiastes 7:20)All have turned away,they have together become worthless;there is no one who does good,not even one.” (Psalms 14:1-3 & 53:1-3)“Their throats are open graves;their tongues practice deceit.” (Psalm 5:9)“The poison of vipers is on their lips.” (Psalm 140:3) “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” (Psalm 10:7)“Their feet are swift to shed blood; (Proverbs 1:16) ruin and misery mark their ways,and the way of peace they do not know.” (Isaiah 59:7-8)“There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Psalm 36:1) The Verdict: Romans 3:19-20 (NIV)Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. “The essence of sin is man substituting himself for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for man. Man asserts himself against God and puts himself where only God deserves to be; God sacrifices himself for man and puts himself where only man deserves to be. Man claims prerogatives that belong to God alone; God accepts penalties that belong to man alone.” — John Stott, Romans: Good News for the World   Reflection Questions: 1. What was something that captured your attention from the sermon? 2. According to Romans 2:1 & 3:1, it appears the Jewish Christians at times felt superior to the Gentiles. What does Paul identify in 3:9 that they have in common with them? How does this shape your perspective of others and yourself? 3. In Romans 3:10-18, Paul strings several Old Testament verses like a pearl necklace. How do these verses describe humanity’s mindset, direction, words, and actions? What is the main point that Paul is making in these verses? 4. If the letter to the Romans closed at verse 20, how would you feel about yourself and God Has there been a time when you truly sensed your sin and need for God? 5. Augustine wrote, “So anyone who thinks that he has understood the divine scriptures or any part of them but cannot by his understanding build up this double love of God and neighbor, has not yet succeeded in understanding them.” How is Romans 3:9-20 designed to increase your love for God and others? 6. Romans 6:13, in the New Living Translation, reads, “Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So, use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.” How could you use your “whole body” to bring God glory this week? Romans 2:17-24 (NIV)Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” Our list keeping has the potential to turn people away from God Romans 2:25-27 (NIV)Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. Matthew 23:25-28 (NIV) Romans 2:28-29 (NIV)A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God. Colossians 2:6-7, 13-15 (NIV) Do I trust in Christianity or Christ? “If you want to chart your progress on the spiritual journey, test the quality of your closest relationships- namely, by love and the fruit of the Spirit. Would the people who know you best say you are becoming more loving, joyful, and at peace? More patient and less frustrated? Kinder, gentler, softening with time, and pervaded by goodness? Faithful, especially in hard times, and self controlled?”— John Mark Comer, Practicing the Way Does my life look more like fandom or apprenticeship?Are my actions a safety net or outpouring of a changed heart?Do I do things for God or for others? Matthew 7:21-23 (NIV)“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’   Reflection Questions: 1. What are you relying on to bring you acceptance, confidence and purpose in life? 2. In Romans 2, Paul highlights the three big “no-no” sins for the Jews. What are three of our cultural equivalents for Christians? How might we be guilty of the same thing? 3. In what ways has your heart changed since following Jesus? What are tangible expressions of that in your daily life? 4. Those outside of faith in Jesus often cite hypocrisy from Christians as reason to reject God. Is your life attractive to others or off putting? Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance? Us versus Us: The Untold Story of Religion and the LGBT Community. The Navigators.   How the world perceives Christianity: anti-homosexual 91%judgmental 87%hypocritical 85 %— Kinnaman, David; Lyons, Gabe. unChristian (p. 27). Baker Publishing Group. When we look at the list of sins listed in Romans 1:24-32, why do you think the church has tended to make the issue of same sex relationships such a focus over other sins listed there?What examples do you see in the life and ministry of Jesus where he crosses relational and cultural lines in order to show a posture of love and value of people that may not share his biblical or moral position on an issue? How is this a model for us on how to posture our lives toward people in our culture? What would our lives look like if were modeling the posture of Jesus? Be specific.4. Tozer Exodus 34:5-7 Romans 1:18 Romans 1:24-32 God Gave Them Over… Romans 1:v.24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity…v.26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts…v.28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind… Romans 1:32 “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, in the end, "Thy will be done." All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. Reflection Questions: Why is our view of God so important? How can we develop inaccurate or caricature views of who God is? How do we develop accurate views of who God is?Do you tend to see God as more of a God of love (grace) or a God of judgment and wrath (truth)?How do we define the wrath of God? What do you think of when you hear that God is a God of wrath?Why is understanding God’s wrath important to understanding and experiencing the gospel as beautiful and as good news? Read Romans 1:24-285. How is God giving us over to our own desires a form of punishment and experience of his wrath?6. How have you experienced the consequences of going your own way and not living out God’s plan and purpose for people? 7. How is the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15 a picture of God giving people over to their sinful desires? How is the wrath of God revealed in this story? How is the gospel revealed in this story? 8. If the intention of God’s plan and purpose is for people to thrive and flourish, why would obedience always be in your best interest? Even when obedience is challenging and counter intuitive? 9. When we look at Paul’s list of vices that are evidence that people live outside of God’s design, where do you see yourself? Why is it important to see that we are included in that list? Why are we tempted to want to see others in that list and not ourself? Read Isaiah 53:4-610. When we understand the wrath of God toward sin and evil we understand what was accomplished on the cross of Christ. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Romans 1:18-20 (NIV)The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Psalm 19:1-4 (NIV)The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice[b] goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Romans 1:21-23 (NIV)For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. How do you identify your idols? Reflection Questions: What comes to mind when you think about God’s wrath? How has God revealed Himself through creation? What do you see in nature that points to a Creator? What evidence to you see in culture that people suppress the truth about the existence of God? How do people live as if there is no God? How do you see evidence of people worshipping creation rather than the Creator?Paul describes God’s wrath against godlessness (not loving God with our heart and life) and wickedness (not loving our neighbor – people made in God’s image). How do you see godlessness and wickedness in your life? Is it hard to use those words to describe you and your life? Explain. If we define idolatry as taking a good thing and making it a God thing (or an ultimate thing)… How do you see evidence of idolatry in our culture? In the church? In your life? Why can it be difficult to identify idols in our life? Questions to identify potential idols in our life… What do I worry about most?What, if I failed or lost it, would cause me to feel that I did not even want to live?What keeps me going?What do I rely on or comfort myself with when things go bad or get difficult?What do I think most easily about?What does my mind go to when I am free to daydream?What preoccupies me?What prayer, unanswered, would make me seriously think about turning away from God?What makes me feel the most self-worth?What am I proudest of?What do I really want and expect out of life?What would really make me happy?Where does my money, time, and energy flow freely and easily?
