Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Mark Taylor
Do you feel the education system is sucking the life out of you and the pupils you serve? I think many of us wish we could click our fingers and make it fit for purpose. A place of growth with shared learning that empowers pupils to be their best selves, so they can create a world they want to inhabit now and in the future.
While a magic wand or a visionary politician might sound like the answer I believe change is already happening. Educators are changing futures one conversation at a time. New technology and the environments where we learn are beginning to look different both in and out of the classroom. I hope you are seeing this first hand and are excited about what you can share with your pupils. We are having conversations, sharing organisations and communities that are supporting education in a way that you may have not experienced.
Educational change will come from us all working in way that supports the best interests of each of our pupils, personalised learning. Governments and policy makers will follow when they see fully how it can be different. So let us teach, coach, mentor and create an environment that fuels every child with feedback, inspiration, resilience and empowerment. The Education on Fire community is shining the torch, so no matter where you are in the world or how you are supporting children this podcast is here for you.
‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.’

125: Empathy Week with Ed Kirwan
The world needs more Empathy– but teaching it is not enoughEmpathy Week 2020 is an invitation for 200,000 young people to put empathy into action and create a better world. Together, we are building the #EmpathyGeneration.Ed Kirwan is an educator, filmmaker and photographer who works to challenge the status quo of social issues and lead people into tangible action. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Bath and worked as a research scientist for a year before he moved into secondary education where he taught science in North London. In the 2 years since, Ed finished a Masters degree in 'Leadership' from UCL:IOE before going on to highlight the issue of homelessness in the UK., educating the general public on ways they can help through powerful visual storytelling. Ed now runs a community that brings homelessness organisations together in the UK, acting as a key networker for the sector and between grassroots organisations and larger national charities. In addition to his work around homelessness, during the past two years, Ed has volunteered and worked in Uganda and India on international development projects and also documented the Homeless World Cup in Mexico in 2018 and Cardiff in 2019.It is ultimately his experiences in the classroom, at the Homeless World Cup and working alongside Slum Soccer in India that led Ed to create Empathy Week 2020. A free secondary school resource, it invites young people to put empathy into action and create a better world by empowering them to make change in their own communities. Ed believes teaching empathy alone is not enough and that students need to be given the freedom, time and space to develop the leadership and empathic skills that are so vital in everyone's career and life. As a dedicated basketball player, he also recognises the importance of sport in character development and has therefore focused on the theme of 'Sporting Change' for this year's Empathy Week.Ed now continues to work on Empathy Week, enabling its impact to spread across the UK as well as continuing to grow his own production company Both Buckets, which has a long term goal of showing that businesses can exist earning a profit whilst 'doing good' at the same time - fulfilling a life of filling both buckets.www.empathy-week.comInstagram - @empathyweekFacebook - @empathyweekTwitter - @TheEmpathyWeekTwitter/Instagram/Facebook - @edkirwanShow Sponsor The National Association for Primary Education speaks for young children and all who live and work with them. We continue our journey in creating an Education on Fire community. On todays show Mark gives details of how he will share the wisdom from the Learning on Fire Podcast as we start to merge both shows. We continue our journey in creating an Education on Fire community. On todays show I give details of how I will share the wisdom from the Learning on Fire Podcast as we start to merge both shows. Our focus is joining together to support children to live their best authentic lives. Understanding who we are and how we see the world around us is very important. Therefore surrounding ourselves with people who can be a positive influence is very important and yet we must realise that schools are part of a system that - like it or hate it - can be less than positive for many children who have to be part of it.Navigating this and being true to ourselves is the key to the future of a thriving planet.‘Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire’.Join us around the campfire and help guide Education on Fire to positively affect the way children feel about life, learning and their future.

118: Get 2 Learn Music with Chris Livingstone
We continue our Primary Music on Fire specials with the opportunity to learn about one of our members Chris Livingstone. We discuss the courses Chris has developed for Get 2 Learn Music and explain how you can sign up for our upcoming webinar where you can get a look inside his rhythm courses. Primary Music on Fire members will receive a discount on any purchases from the webinar.Chris Livingstone has been teaching music for over 20 years. In 2008 he began teaching whole class music in UK schools as part of the first access music program (aka wider opps). As he travelled to many schools delivering music he noticed that the regular class teachers who assisted him in delivering music would realise that they could deliver the fundamentals of music themselves even without specialist instrumental knowledge providing they had great visual resources lesson plans and the right support. This led him to develop courses to help all teachers to deliver the fundamentals of music regardless of their teaching background or specialism.Sign up here to receive a FREE Primary Music on Fire rhythm game download and get on the email waiting list for the webinar.https://www.educationonfire.com/primary-music/Websitehttps://gtlm-school-of-music.teachable.com www.get2learnmusic.com/freeSocial MediaFacebook - get2learnmusicShow Sponsor The National Association for Primary Education speaks for young children and all who live and work with them.
