In the final episode of our series exploring what Critical Race Theory (CRT) is, we speak with author, mathematician, and political commentator, Dr. James Lindsay. James has written six books spanning a range of subjects including religion, the philosophy of science and postmodern theory. He is the founder of New Discourses and currently promoting his new book "Cynical Theories: How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identity―and Why This Harms Everybody." Dr. Lindsay offers a viewpoint and opinion on Critical Race Theory that differs from the previous two guests in this series. While many believe that CRT is a legal framework by which to view the racial disparity among minorities, Dr. Lindsay argues that this is a dangerous, and racist, theory that undermines the progress and the vision of the Civil Rights Movement. Many, and I mean many, people think of William Wallace from Braveheart, others think of folks like Oliver North, and even some think of John Wayne, the movie legend, who has brought us films like "Sands of Iwo Jima" or "the Green Berets". But why is it that those are the figures we conjure up, and why are they all white? This week Josh and Will get a chance to speak with author, professor, and all around super woman, Kristin Kobes Du Mez   (Du Mez=‘do’ ‘may’) about her most recent book 'Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation'. They answer some of the aforementioned questions by examining her book and learn more about the role that evangelicals played in crafting this idea of manhood. It's no secret that Donald Trump is notoriously known as Teflon-Don for his savviness to evade civil or criminal liability for the many things he's been accused of, but this week we speak with a person who knows a thing or two about prosecuting Trump and his organization. Mark Silk,  Director, Leonard Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life and Professor of Religion in Public Life, recently wrote an article called, "Why our preferred pronoun for God should be ‘they’" where he explores this topic in detail. We had a chance to chat with him and learn why his article seemed to strike a nerve among those who have commonly considered God's pronoun to be, well, less vague. But what exactly does the constitution have to say about mandates? On this episode, your political host, Will Wright, talks with Constitutional Professor Eric Berger about the constitutionality of vaccine mandates. Then they discuss a Supreme Court case that is often cited to justify mandates, Jacobson v. Massachusets, and lastly Will finally gets his chance to flex his knowledge of OSHA to the professor! Guest Bio:Professor Berger clerked for the Honorable Merrick B. Garland on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He then practiced in Jenner & Block's Washington, D.C. office, where he worked on litigation in several state and federal trial and appellate courts, including the United States Supreme Court. Professor Berger's matters there included cases involving lethal injection, same-sex marriage, the detention of foreign nationals at Guantanamo Bay, and internet obscenity. Professor Berger teaches Constitutional Law I (structure), Constitutional Law II (rights), Constitutional History, Federal Courts, First Amendment, and Statutory Interpretation. He also teaches a class for undergraduates on Legislation and Regulation. He has been voted Professor of the Year by the upperclass law students six times. He has also received the College Distinguished Teaching Award (in 2010), the Law Alumni Council Distinguished Faculty Award (in 2018), and the John H. Binning Award for Excellence (in 2019).
