Redefining Strength: A Deep Dive into True Masculinity and Faith
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comThis episode, hosted by Josh Burtram and Will Wright, welcomes Professor Nancy Piercy, a distinguished author and scholar, to discuss the complex nature of masculinity in the context of faith and culture. In the episode "Redefining Strength: A Deep Dive into True Masculinity and Faith," Piercy shares her journey from enduring abuse to critically examining feminism, shaping her understanding of masculinity.Piercy delves into the historical shifts in perceptions of masculinity, tracing their evolution since the Industrial Revolution and Darwinian thought. She articulates how these shifts have led to varying, often conflicting views of what it means to be masculine, especially in a secular context versus a faith-based one.Significantly, the conversation sheds light on the stark contrast between 'committed Christian men' and 'nominal Christians.' Piercy references sociological studies to demonstrate how actively practicing Christian men often exhibit more positive familial and marital behaviors than their secular counterparts. This observation challenges prevalent stereotypes about the Christian doctrine of male headship, which is often misinterpreted as oppressive. The podcast also addresses the misconceptions about headship in Christian families. Piercy underscores that true Christian headship, when understood and practiced correctly, fosters loving, respectful, and nurturing family environments, contradicting the allegations of it breeding abuse.Throughout the discussion, Piercy emphasizes the need to appreciate the inherent strengths of masculinity, guided by faith and moral principles. The episode encourages listeners to rethink traditional views of masculinity, advocating for a balanced understanding that values strength and sensitivity, leadership and compassion, in line with Christian teachings. This "Faithful Politics" episode provides a thought-provoking exploration of masculinity, urging a redefinition that combines strength with moral integrity, deeply rooted in faith. Replay: "Building a Bridge" w/Father James Martin
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comThis is an episode we released back in February of 2023. There's been a lot in the news around the Pope Firing an Anti-LGBTQ Texas Bishop. So we thought it would be fitting to replay this amazing conversation we had with Father James Martin! Enjoy the show! From Feb/2023:Let's face it, most people in the LGBTQ+ world know exactly how members of the faith community feel about their lifestyle. So when a prominent Priest in the Catholic faith chooses to extend love, not hate, to this marginalized group you would expect that would be met with praise from other believers. Well unfortunately that's not the story you'll hear on this episode, where Pastor Josh and Will speak with Jesuit Priest, Father James Martin. We start off the episode laying down the foundation of what is Catholicism, structural hierarchy and definition of terms. Will (Political Host) ask Father Martin about the letter he received from Pope Francis regarding the criminality of being gay. This letter came after the most recent AP article stating that the "Pope says homosexuality not a crime. . Then the topic shifts to the long running ministry of Father Martin, that involves his journey to make the Catholic Church more accepting of the LGBTQ+ community, despite loud opposition from both inside and outside the Church. We then talk about child abuse within the Catholic Church and finally end talking about the Super Bowl?Guest Bio:Fr. James Martin, SJ is a Jesuit priest, editor-at-large of America magazine and bestselling author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, and Between Heaven and Mirth.Father Martin has written for many publications, including the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, and he is a regular commentator in the national and international mediaBefore entering the Jesuits in 1988, Father Martin graduated from the Wharton School of Business and worked for General Electric for six years. Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn this enlightening episode of Faithful Politics, hosts Josh Bertram and Will Wright engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Scott McKnight, a renowned New Testament scholar. Titled "Decoding Revelation: A Modern Take on Ancient Wisdom," the episode delves into the complexities and contemporary relevance of the Book of Revelation.Dr. McKnight sheds light on Revelation's historical context, emphasizing its original intent as a narrative of justice and the defeat of evil, rather than a manual for speculative end-time theories. He clarifies common misinterpretations, particularly dispelling notions of identifying modern-day figures as antichrists or beasts. Instead, he encourages readers to view Revelation as a template for discerning the presence of 'Babylon' or corrupt power in both ecclesiastical and secular realms. The discussion pivots to how Revelation's imagery, particularly of Babylon, resonates with modern issues of political corruption and moral decay, drawing parallels between ancient Rome and contemporary societies. Dr. McKnight underlines the importance of wisdom, witness, and worship in understanding and applying the teachings of Revelation to modern Christian life.Furthermore, the episode touches upon the broader role of the Bible in shaping moral decisions and the church's responsibility in contemporary society. Dr. McKnight addresses the need for Christians to adopt a comprehensive and faithful approach to biblical teachings, steering clear of distortions and cultural influences that diverge from the core Christian message. This episode is a compelling blend of historical insights, theological exploration, and practical guidance, offering listeners a fresh perspective on one of the Bible's most mystifying books. It's an essential listen for those seeking to navigate the complex relationship between faith, politics, and modern society through the lens of ancient wisdom.
