Climate Change and The Future of Food with Matt Reynolds, WIRED UK

In this podcast Melanie Boylan speaks with Matt Reynolds about his book The Future of Food, How to Feed the Planet Without Destroying it. We discuss gene sequencing, veganism, education, activism and so much more.  Grab a cuppa and take part in the conversation today. Matt Reynolds is the science editor at WIRED UK, where he edits and commissions stories about the environment, health, space and everything else about how science is  changing the world. He’s particularly interested in the science of food and the impact that our diets have on the environment. His first book, The Future of Food: How to Feed the Planet Without Destroying it was published on September 16, 2021.  Matt was previously a technology reporter at New Scientist. With a global  population estimated to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050, we face a huge  challenge in feeding everyone on the planet. How is that to be achieved? In this brilliantly insightful, one stop guide WIRED journalist Matt Reynolds assesses the limits and drawbacks  of current food production and looks at the ways in which they can be  tackled. He considers the  potential for lab-grown meat to replace inefficient livestock farming.  He talks to the scientists hoping to perfect more productive and  disease-resistant crops. He explores initiatives to  make agriculture less environmentally damaging and to reduce food  waste. And he addresses the fundamental question: how do we feed more  people while using fewer of the Earth's resource. You can find Matt on Twitter

Navigating the present and preparing for tomorrow – with intelligent data

Financial institutions are sitting on top of a lot of data, and so much of that goes unused, whether it is because the data is sitting in disparate systems that do not play well together, or because of the lack of expertise or resources to truly benefit from the power of it. In this episode of One Vision, Theo and Bradley play host to three thought leaders from Curinos –– Sarah Welch, Suraya Randawa, and Rutger van Faassen –– to talk about how financial institutions can harness the power of intelligent data to build digital relationships at scale, and create new competitive advantage for the digital future.

Joshua Galloway - CEO of Lepricon

Galloway has been a gamer since he was a child. His father worked at Litton Industries which made gyroscopes for missile defence systems in the US – which also made microwave ovens – but he brought home the latest PCs. As a result, Galloway and his twin brother spent a lot of time on the PC – as well as fighting off their other four siblings – and were the only kids on the block to have a PC in the home. Gaming and basic coding fascinated them with Galloway now heading up one of the fastest moving blockchain gaming platforms in Lepricon and his brother working in the game development industry. “Games have changed a lot since then,” he admits. “We played games like Olympics which basically consisted of two dots running around a track. Then we got an upgrade to a games console similar to an Atari. “But whatever we had, we often had a family games night. It was in our blood.” Galloway took a job at God Games, part of Rockstar Games and the maker of the popular Grand Theft Auto. He had a choice to go to New York or Hong Kong. “I came for one year and I’m still here 20 years later.” To find out more, tune in for the quick fire round with Joshua. Your host is Jillian Godsil, award winning journalist, broadcaster and author. Her latest book can be found at https://persons-of-interest.io/

The AI equilibrium, Maeve Bleahene, Co-founder and Head of Operations at Peroptyx

Traditionally, the AI and Machine Learning sectors have been a male-dominated industry. Findings from the 2020 World Economic Forum report state that women make up only 26 percent of data and AI positions in the workforce. Yet, 66 percent of respondents in Deloitte’s The State of Women in AI survey reported that having more women working within an organisation can only benefit a business and increase success. Ronan talks to Maeve Bleahene, Co-founder and Head of Operations at Peroptyx about this and more. Maeve talks about her background, what drove her to become an entrepreneur, what does Peroptyx does, and how to get more women to enter the AI and Machine Learning workforce. Maeve also talks about reducing bias in AI, why the human element is an important part of a successful AI strategy, and where she sees AI heading. More about Maeve: Having co-founded and built a successful machine learning company, which recently raised €1.7 million from the ground up,  Maeve is a firm believer that the AI industry requires more female roles and insights. This is something that she is determined to help with at Peroptyx, with three new female hires on the cards before the end of the year which will bring their team to a 50/50 gender ratio.
