Teaching Retrieval Practice, Spacing and Interleaving - Podsie with Joshua Ling

Former 8th Grade middle school teacher Joshua Ling started Podsie because he wanted to support his students in and out of the classroom.  In this podcast with Ebony Ximines-Parke to tell us how this worked. What is Podsie? Podsie combines the research-backed learning strategies of retrieval practice, spacing, and interleaving, customized by the mastery data of each individual student, to enhance learning both inside and outside of the classroom. They want to ensure that the hard work that teachers put into teaching doesn’t go to waste, while ensuring that they are supporting the learning needs of their individual students. How does the learning science come into play? Retrieval Practice Retrieval practice is an incredibly powerful strategy in which students actively draw out previously-taught knowledge from their brains, thus enhancing "diverse forms of learning, including memory, problem solving, and generalization to new situations." When they challenge students to frequently and intentionally retrieve knowledge, they grow in their abilities to retain and quickly access information. The team at Podsie believe that both retention and quick retrieval are essential foundations for students when it comes to "deeper learning" and transferring skills and conventions to different contexts. Traditionally, quizzes and tests are used in the classroom as a form of retrieval practice. At Podsie, they completely combine the research-backed power of frequent, low-stakes retrieval practice with spacing and interleaving to enhance the learning of students. Twitter

Saro McKenna, Co Founder of Alien Worlds

In a time when play to earn is the echo that follows gamers around, Alien Worlds is converting people to mass adoption through strategy and governance. Likewise, the gamers have no idea that they are building something much bigger than mined Trillion on a planet in a galaxy far, far away. Let’s start with the basics. Alien Worlds is a metaverse with seven planets. On metaverses more later. Launched last year, it’s the biggest game on WAX and possibly on blockchain and last month it flip flopped in and out of first and second place in all dApps globally with PancakeSwap. It happened quite quickly and then some. First of all, Alien Worlds was the first game on blockchain to break through 100,000 users, then one million users, then two million. Now it’s surging at 2.5 million users. It is literally limitless. Your host is Jillian Godsil, award winning journalist, broadcaster and author. It’s the FinTech Groundhog Day

Have we truly fulfilled the promise of fintech? How do you look beyond what is easy and serve communities who have long been ignored by traditional financial services, such as migrants? What is best for the greater good? How do we create change at scale? Perhaps the only way to unbake systemic racism within financial services is to change the ingredients and those that are preparing the meal, as well as for whom we are preparing the meal. Everyone deserves a seat at the table. In this week’s One Vision, Theo and Bradley welcome Nina Mohanty back on the show to talk about her new brainchild, Bloom Money, an app that is “built by migrants, for migrants”.
