Building a Car from Scratch and innovating for the future with Katie Kilroy, Formula Trinity

In todays podcast Melanie Boylan meets Katie Kilroy, a third year Mechanical Engineering student at Trinity College Dublin. She's the Head of Marketing of Formula Trinity; a chassis engineer for the internal combustion team as well as researcher for the control engineering department for the autonomous team. She's always up for new challenges and the chance to learn something new and it’s probably why She's on three departments. In her spare time Katie is developing android apps for people with dementia and volunteering tutoring secondary school students as a Committee member of Volunteer Tuition Program in Trinity. Katie joined the team three years ago, as a chassis engineer. The chassis is like the skeleton of the car and she was in charge of designing the tabs which are used to attach all the components to the chassis. This involved communicating and collaborating with multiple departments and teams which has helped her get where she is in Formula Trinity. This year, she's heavily involved with the CAD (Computer Aided Design) and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) of the chassis structure and she is in charge of testing the front impact attenuator. She was asked to join the Business and Operations team to help out with social media. Five months later she is now the Head of Marketing having run a successful “Femuary” campaign to promote women in motorsports alongside two of our other members; Katherine Hardgrave and Sabrina Steinberga. With another upcoming social media campaign “Ai-pril” headed by Katherine, with a talk on Women in Ai on April 7th.  About Formula Trinity:  http://formulatrinity.com/ Formula Trinity is a student lead team made up of current Trinity College students, competing in the UK competition of Formula SAE. The Team Captain Arnie Sasnauskas founded the team in 2017 after his 1st year of engineering here at Trinity, with the help of the Head of Engineering David Simonian and Deputy Head of Engineering William Dunne. The aim of the competition is to design and build a car throughout the academic year, you then race it at the Formula Student UK competition at Silverstone in July. The team gives Trinity students the platform to put the theory they learn in lectures to practice and gain real life experience as a member of an engineering, business, or autonomous team. The team motto is “Building careers, one race car at a time”. Being on the team is voluntary, they all put hours of work in during spare time to ensure they complete the car and rely on generosity from sponsors to fund the construction of the car. Since 2017, they have grown to over 80 members and have become the top performing team in Ireland, achieving 2nd place in the 2019 Class 2 in the Formula Student UK competition. They have accomplished this through bringing together talented students from first years to masters and multiple disciplines such as engineering, computer science, business, law and many others. They are a team of equal opportunity constantly promoting gender equality and women in STEM. The team made up of three main sections: Internal Combustion, Autonomous and Business & Operations, with each having broken down into departments. The internal combustion section has 7 departments ranging from aerodynamics and powertrain to suspension and electronics. Zen and the art of apple growing, with Andy Brennan, founder of Aaron Burr Cider, one of the world's most expensive ciders

We catch up with Andy Brennan, whose book Uncultivated, Wild Apples, Real Cider, and the Complicated Art of Making a Living, we recently reviewed. More about Aaron Burr Cider “The Cidery”, which produces Aaron Burr Cider in Wurtsboro, New York, is a small homestead farm dating back to the early 1800s. Our tenure (and you can read more more about us here) on this land began in 2006 with the planting of a cider-orchard. Cider-apples are different from eating-apples in the same way wine-grapes are different from table-grapes. You wouldn’t want to make wine from big, tasty fresh-eating grapes, and the same applies with cider. We use our apples and other locally grown and foraged apples for one mission: to re-create “true cider”, the rightful table wine of our land. This focus is founded on the belief that early Americans drank history’s best cider. Reestablishing this involves a lost holism -from farming to art, from the market to policies –cider is an identity. There is much from our recent past which must be undone but luckily the descendants of early cider apples do still exist in the wild. We believe their ability to survive the 20th century provides American cider, cider-orchards, and cider businesses the much-needed paragon for the future. About Andy Brennan Andy Brennan owns Aaron Burr Cider in New York’s Catskills region. His career started as a freelance artist, working in the fields of photography, design, and architecture. Since its founding in 2011, Aaron Burr Cider has become well known among cider enthusiasts for its natural approach to cider making, using wild apples and yeasts. As a prominent figure in the growing US cider movement, Andy has been featured in print media and on television, radio, and podcasts. He regularly speaks about natural apple growing and cider production at museums, trade events, festivals, restaurants, and anywhere local food enthusiasts are found. You can buy the book Uncultivated here

Experience is not a "thing" you do, it's everything you do, Victoria Taylor

Understanding what experience to give to your customers is one thing, but there's valuable relationships we also have with our staff and suppliers as well.  In this podcast Melanie Boylan spoke to Victoria Taylor about her long background in this field and about her upcoming book and future projects.  Links t Victoria below: Who is Victoria Taylor? Victoria Taylor is an experience consultant and international speaker, who puts different in experience. Her purpose is to help brands become experience leaders . Victoria get brands to ‘Raise-the-Bar’ in experience by thinking different, creating different and doing different. She can consult on audience, employee, customer and brand experience, working with boutique businesses, fortune 100 brands and everything in between. She is a proven customer experience leader who brings together the digital and physical worlds, transforming experience at every moment and interaction someone has with a brand. She tells all her clients this: They need to Make People Matter. Make people matter and your brand will matter to them. "I'm far from finished yet and my mission to Raise-the-Bar in experience continues, one day at a time, one brand at a time, one experience at a time." Victoria Taylor. Book Bio: 'Points Of Entry: Unlocking People Experience' was written with one purpose in mind. To help brands to recognise that every person is important to them. I realised that a lot of the conversation around experience focused on customer experience or, when someone is already a customer of a brand. 'Points Of Entry : Unlocking People Experience' looks at the 'pre-experience' BEFORE someone becomes a customer and it uncovers the potential entry points that a person has into a business. I define a Point of Entry as a place where anyone can gain ‘entry’ to your business, gain insight, have a conversation, or experience your brand for the first time if they don't know you, or engage with and experience your business regularly if they do know you. The experience you create at each entry point will either be the beginning of a solid business relationship (for those who don’t know you), a great experience (for existing customers and those that do know you) or the end of the road on all counts! Entry points are everywhere and when I counted up my own, I had over 70 of them. It made me realise how many opportunities there were for brands to build great experiences with people who were not yet customers. Experiences at every moment and every interaction. But in order to create an experience, knowledge is crucial. This book helps readers to understand 1.) Why entry points are important for EVERY brand today. 2.) Why 'moments' are key to creating experiences. 3.) How you can apply Entry Point Theory to your business with examples. 4.) How you get started in actioning it. We are all in the experience business first and foremost, second to that comes the product or service we offer, but experience happens long before someone becomes a customer, I hope this book will become the guide to realising the potential of people experience When you Make People Matter, your brand will matter to them.
