Expert Investor: Matt Leibowitz - What's Hot, What's Not in America
Home country bias (where you only buy stocks in your home market) is an important trap to avoid. Australian investors in particular need to break out of the ASX bubble. The opportunity set is just so much larger overseas (Australia represents ~2% of the global share market). So in this episode we set out to understand what stocks are being bought and sold in the world's largest share market - the USA. To help us with this, we were joined by the founder of Stake, Matt Leibowitz. Stake offers brokerage-free trading of US markets for Australians, which means he has great insight into what Australians are buying overseas. So we picked his brains on what stocks are hot in the US and broke down why. In this episode you will learn: • What we got wrong on leveraged ETF's in our last episode • How Matt stays on top of the volume of information out there about different companies • Matt's trading philosophy • About the obscure trucking company that over-65's are buying • The company that was the #1 most bought stock for the past month • Whether all the hype around Beyond Meat has led to Australians buying the stock • How Australians can access Berkshire Hathaway Class A shares If you are interested in signing up to Stake, head to https://hellostake.com/ and use the code 'EQUITYMATES' to let Stake know we sent you. Basics: Leverage - Increasing your risk and your returns
One of the biggest takeaways from our Sydney live show was the potential of investing with leverage. In a night where there was some healthy disagreement amongst the panel (in particular on investing v trading, and on short-selling) there was general agreement that leverage can be a useful tool for young people investing with a long time horizon. Leverage is simply the act of investing with someone else's money. It increases risk, but it also increases potential returns. The best example of investing with leverage, that most people are familiar with, is a mortgage. When buying a house you put down a deposit and then use the bank's money for the rest of the purchase. Using leverage in the share market follows the same principle. In this episode you will learn: • What leverage means in an investing context • The benefits of investing with leverage • The risks of leverage • Two different types of leverage - internal and external • Levered ETF's - what are they, and why isn't Ren a big fan • How you can invest with the bank's money and the risks and benefits Equity Mates Investing Podcast is a part of the Diamantina Media Network - the home of Australia's favourite podcasts. Trading Talk: Short Selling - Make money while everyone else is losing theirs
Short selling is the act of betting on the price of an asset to go down. It is very topical in Australia at the moment, with the controversy over short-seller J Capital Research releasing a report about software-company WiseTech Global (ASX: WTC). WiseTech is a market darling in Australia, up over 100% year-to-date, but fell 25% after J Capital released their report. Given short-selling is topical at the moment, we thought it was the perfect time to break down what short-selling is, how it is done and everything else you need to know. We finish off with some of our favourite short-selling stories, and may have started a feud with another investing podcast during the episode. In this episode you will learn: • The story behind WiseTech Global's recent price fall • What short selling is and how you make money • The two main ways short-selling is done • The key risks you need to understand • Our favourite stories about fraudulent companies and the investors that discovered them We had a great live show in Melbourne last week. Basics: Understanding Market Cap - A Company's Price Tag
One of the unique things about the stock market is that you are told the price of your asset every single day. Imagine if that was the same in other asset classes. Every day, a real estate agent calls you to tell you the value of your house or an online portal shows you the latest price someone got for your car. This price tag is the 'market cap' (which when it gets divided by the number of shares - becomes the share price). Market cap (aka market capitalisation) is the value that the market decides a particular company is worth. As well as a company's market cap, whole markets and indexes are also given measured for their market cap. This then allows for the comparison of the sizes of these different markets. In this episode you will learn: • What the term market cap means and how to calculate it • The difference between measures of value (i.e. market cap) and measures of size (i.e. revenue or assets) • The different categories (mega cap, large, medium, small, micro etc.) • Key ratios that use market cap • What market cap tells you about risk • Different ways to use market cap in your investing decisions If you are yet to register for our free live shows with Finimize - make sure you get onto it ASAP • Melbourne - Wednesday 23rd October @ 6pm: https://generalassemb.ly/education/finimizecommunity-presents-what-to-make-of-markets-in-2019/melbourne/87834 • Sydney - Tuesday 29th October @ 6pm: https://generalassemb.ly/education/finimizecommunity-presents-what-to-make-of-markets-in-2019/sydney/87839We're really excited for these events, and to meet more of our Equity Mates community. News: WeWork, Uber & the moment of reckoning in venture capital
WeWork has been front of mind over the past few weeks. The office space leasing company funded by Softbank's Vision Fund had expected a $47 billion value at IPO. Instead, the company had to pull its IPO as its expected value dropped to below $20 billion. Days later, the company dismissed the co-founder and CEO Adam Neumann. After pulling the IPO, questions have now arisen about WeWork's ability to stay solvent. Some estimates suggest WeWork may run out of cash within the year (for context: in 2018, WeWork lost $1.8 billion or $200k every hour). In this episode of Equity Mates, we make the case that WeWork is just the tip of a VC-fuelled, over-inflated iceberg. In fact, over the last few years a number of unprofitable unicorns (a unicorn is a private tech company valued at $1 billion or more) have gone public. It seems that public market investors are not as tolerant of companies that lose money, and this has been reflected in their share price. To give you an sense of what we're discussing, below is a list of a few companies mentioned in this episode and their share price movement since IPO (price as of recording date): • WeWork pulled IPO • Uber down 29% • Lyft down 50% • Slack down 33% • Spotify down 21% • Snapchat down 46% • Dropbox down 31% • Peloton down 19% In this episode you will learn: • How WeWork is just the tip of the iceberg of tech unicorns now struggling in public markets • What led to these inflated valuations in the first place • How the iPhone's release in 2007 sparked a decade-long, venture capital boom • What recent VC megadeals, including deals by Softbank, have meant for these companies • Why now is the time that this VC bubble is ending • How public market investors should think about these events Remember, our live show are coming up fast. Classic Ep: Jesse Felder - Clear Thinking On What's Happening In Markets
A while ago (and in response to our most common critique) we at Equity Mates made a commitment - to improve the quality of our audio. Unfortunately, Ren is moving house at the moment and with a poor internet connection comes patchy audio. So in the spirit of upholding our commitment, and improving our audio quality, we chose not to release that episode. Instead, we're re-releasing one of our favourites. An interview with someone who has been managing money for over twenty years, who founded his own hedge fund and now provides some of the clearest and most insightful market commentary going around. We hope you enjoy this interview with Jesse Felder. Original show notes below: We are so excited to bring you another episode in our Expert Investor series. Our guest this week is someone who we have been following for a couple of years now, and have longed to have on the show. His name is Jesse Felder. Jesse is an ex-Wall Street trader, starting his career at Bear Stearns (without even studying Business or Finance) - the largest investment bank on Wall Street at the time. He then went on co-found a multi-billion dollar hedge fund, before moving into financial media, and running 'The Felder Report'. Jesse's views resonate with us, and if you've listened to our episode 'The Buy-And-Hold Cult' then you will have heard Jesse speak before. In this episode you will learn: • Jesse's number one thing that beginners should understand better about markets • What Jesse's first investment was, and what lead him to that decision • The worst piece of advice he's ever received • Why all investors should be wary of recency bias • Jesse's current approach to investing, given equity valuations are at historic highs • Why Equity Mates might be wrong about the logic of index investing • Why Gold still has potential, and why it should be part of every investor's portfolio Stocks and resources discussed: • Reminiscences of a Stock Operator - Edwin Lefèvre • The Felder Report • Superinvestors And The Art Of Worldly Wisdom • Wall Street Journal Hosted on Acast.
