2020 has been a volatile year. Using the American S&P 500, the market reached a high on 19 Feb, fell 34% (1,149 points) and then has risen 28% (637 points). While the market has not fully recovered, there is a sentiment amongst some commentators that 'the worst is over'.With the economy still in lockdown and the news on coronavirus still concerning, it got us thinking - can the worst really be over? That led us to research some previous market crashes, and introduced us to the idea of a 'bull trap'.We unpack what we learned in this episode. By going through some lessons from history, we see that previous market crashes have followed a similar pattern - an initial fall, a partial recovery (50% retracement) and then a further fall where the market tests (and often breaks) the previous low.It is important to note that this doesn't always happen in market falls. So this is not a foregone conclusion. However, it is in the range of possible outcomes.With this information in mind, we then talk about how we're positioning our portfolios. David James Koch nicknamed "Kochie" is an Australian television presenter best known as a host of the Seven Network's breakfast program Sunrise. From Adelaide, he began his media career as a financial journalist, writing for a number of different publications before eventually moving to television. At the time of releasing this, the ASX200 is down 32% from it's peak in February 2020, and the S&P500 in America is down 24.95%. There is one big topic on everyone's mind at the moment. The coronavirus is shutting down cities and requiring co-ordinated actions between Government's and its citizens in a way we haven't seen previously in our lifetime. Financial markets have lost about one-third of their value, and economists suggest that unemployment could get as high as 1-in-5 people. At this point, a recession seems inevitable.To help us understand what is happening in the economy, and how governments and central banks have responded, Alec (Ren) was joined by David Bassanese, the Chief Economist at Betashares - one of Australia's largest ETF providers. David has worked as an economist at the OECD, Treasury, Bankers Trust and Macquarie Bank, and comes with a wealth of experience and insight.In this episode, David makes clear that we must think about this as a health crisis first and an economic crisis second. We've got plenty of time while self-isolated, so what better to do than make more bonus content.
