Within these markets there have been many companies fall much further than that - some more than 70%.It presents a good buying opportunity for those who are fortunate enough to have some cash to deploy into the markets, but the big question is what to buy? The economic impact of COVID-19 is likely to be significant, and the question we are asking ourselves is what companies are in a good position to survive this crisis, and then thrive afterwards? In this episode, we look at two key elements that help us to answer this question.Key Element #1: Strong Balance SheetKey Element #2: Stable EarningsWe unpack why it is important to have a strong balance sheet, what it actually means to have one, and where you need to look to find this information. We also share a number of stocks that are on our watchlist during this time, and companies that we believe will not only survive this period, but thrive when it is all over.Want more Equity Mates? Expert Investor: Economic Impact of Coronavirus with David Bassanese

There is one big topic on everyone's mind at the moment. The coronavirus is shutting down cities and requiring co-ordinated actions between Government's and its citizens in a way we haven't seen previously in our lifetime. Financial markets have lost about one-third of their value, and economists suggest that unemployment could get as high as 1-in-5 people. At this point, a recession seems inevitable. To help us understand what is happening in the economy, and how governments and central banks have responded, Alec (Ren) was joined by David Bassanese, the Chief Economist at Betashares - one of Australia's largest ETF providers. David has worked as an economist at the OECD, Treasury, Bankers Trust and Macquarie Bank, and comes with a wealth of experience and insight. In this episode, David makes clear that we must think about this as a health crisis first and an economic crisis second. As much as we can look at economic indicators to get a gauge of the economy's performance, the health indicators - testing numbers, infection rate, ICU capacity etc. - are ultimately going to be determinative for how the economy performs in 2020.We then chat about the response to this crisis - both from the Australian Government and the Reserve Bank of Australia - before finally discussing how individual investors can think about their personal investments at a time like this. For more information on David - check out his writing on the Betashares website here.Want more Equity Mates? Owen, like all of us, remains deeply concerned about the human side of this crisis). So we wanted to get Owen on the phone to hear what he was particularly excited about. In this bonus episode we pick his brain to understand how he's approaching investing at a time like this, and any particular companies he's watching.Want more? Bonus Ep: Hearing from Beginner Investors - Mates of Equity Mates

We've got plenty of time while self-isolated, so what better to do than make more bonus content. In this episode we call a few of our mates and hear their thoughts on what's happening in markets.First of all, we call our mate Alf - a fellow investor and the creator of the Equity Mates logo and theme song (get around him for that!) We hear how he's managing the recent market downturn and his thoughts about investing for the future. We then called our resident bond expert, Pete. We've had Pete on the show before, where he explained the basics of bonds to us (listen to that episode here). We gave him a call to hear how the bond market has been going over the past few weeks. One story he's had his eye on is the performance of Virgin Australia's listed bonds - a great illustration of how the bond market can offer insight into the market's thoughts on a company's future.Want more?
