An alternative investment thesis for AI

In this episode of Equity Mates - we're looking at AI - and explore an alternative thesis. Cause while it's easy to focus on big names like Google and Microsoft, there are alternate pathways to consider. One approach involves the 'picks and shovels' method—companies like NVIDIA that provide the tools for AI development. Another strategy is to focus on businesses that leverage AI's capabilities. Ren and Bryce bring in insights from Cathie Wood and Andrew Page, who highlight how Tesla, with its vast driving data, and Volpara, with its breast imaging data, benefit from AI.So, then we brainstorm on a broad array of companies harnessing AI. The usual suspects—social media giants like Meta, Bytedance, Twitter, search engine titan Google, and device leader Apple—are on our list. But beyond these are myriad firms with unique datasets ripe for AI training. The report from McKinsey is here. Big announcement from us – we’ve written a new book! The investment case for Nelnet, Dropbox and Match Group | Arch Capital

We're chatting to Brett Schafer and Ryan Henderson from Arch Capital, a hedge fund based in Seattle. Brett and Ryan also host the Chit Chat Money podcast. We love that Brett and Ryan are super public about their holdings, which gives us plenty to chat about in this podcast. We’ve chosen three to unpack in more detail.First, the largest holding in the Arch Capital fund - Nelnet (NNI) and as they’ve written “Has this student loan company turned itself into the next Berkshire Hathaway?” Then it's to Dropbox (DBX) - which is just outside top 10 holding in Arch Capital fund, but an interesting one to unpack given the competitors and the share price movement (down 20% past 5 years). Then we turn to Match Group (MTCH)... cause money may not buy love, but love can make money. Match Group, owner of Tinder and dozens of other dating platforms, is the third largest holding in Arch Capital’s fund. Also, don't forget – we’ve written a new book! It’s coming out on 22 August and you can pre-order now from Amazon or Booktopia.
