But this was not a furtive slaying in a dorm room, or a student love triangle gone wrong. This murder took place in the middle of the day, in the middle of a public school building, in the middle of a brawl. Student John Edward Roach was stabbed in the throat in a room full of brawling young men – yet no one saw his murderer strike. His last whispered words were heard by many – but his murderer went free. Episode 6 Half and Susanne Zantop In January 2001, the double murder of a couple, beloved professors at Dartmouth College, shocked everyone in the small college town of Hanover, New Hampshire. Half Zantop and his wife Susanne were found brutally stabbed to death in their own home. Police initially assumed the killer was a disgruntled student, a secret lover, a jealous colleague…and turned the Dartmouth community upside down trying to root out the killer. But evidence at the scene pointed in a different direction entirely. And led to a pair of killers who were never on police radar, and who no one expected would be capable of such a brutal crime. Episode 5 Jane Britton In January 1969, a brutal murder of a graduate student shocked Harvard University. Jane Britton was found raped and beaten to death in her apartment. The investigation rocked Harvard’s esteemed faculty when several anthropology professors came under investigation for the murder, who were under scrutiny because a red powder sprinkled at the murder scene paralleled an ancient burial rite. There were also whispers that Jane was involved in an affair with a professor, and her boyfriend, also a student, was interrogated several times. Episode 4 Pam Milam In this episode we discuss a truly devastating campus murder – the 1972 abduction, rape and slaying of college student Pam Milam. Pam was enjoying sorority rush week at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She attended some evening events with her friends, and left a party before midnight to go move her car closer to the dormitory suite. She never returned. The next day her father located her distinct vehicle parked in a different spot, and in the trunk was Pam, bound and strangled. Authorities looked at numerous suspects, including a fellow student who abducted and raped at least 2 women, but the case went cold. Forensic Genealogy conducted decades later pointed to a suspect no one had ever considered – multiple offender Jeffrey Lynn Hand. Episode 3 Robert Bechtel In 1955, there was a shocking murder at Swarthmore College, in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. A student, Francis Holmes Strozier, was shot in the head and killed as he slept in his dorm bed. The killer, 22 year old student Robert Bechtel, was the one who alerted others to his crime. But, Bechtel claimed that he was driven to kill others after being the victim of bullying, and at trial, used the insanity defense. Bechtel was institutionalized, but less than 5 years later was a free man. He went on to live a seemingly normal life – even becoming a professor at a college himself. But Bechtel would eventually confess all to his own students – and use his own actions as a call to action to fight campus bullying. Follow Campus Killings on Social Media. Episode 2 Yeardley Love At the University of Virginia, famously founded by Thomas Jefferson, no student had ever killed another. In 2010, that changed. Popular and athletic senior Yeardley Love was found in her bed by her roommate, bloodied and battered. A hole in her bedroom door told police that her killer had been very angry – and one man in Yeardley’s life was known for his violent rages. Her ex-boyfriend, fellow senior George Huguely, was arrested for her murder. Huguely stood trial and was convicted. Yeardley’s mother and sister sued both the school and Huguely, but the suit against UVA was dropped. Yeardley’s family won a large civil verdict against her killer, and as a result of Yeardley’s death, UVA now requires students to report arrests, and the Virginia General Assembly passed a law making it easier for people who are in a relationship to obtain a protection order against their abusive partner. The February 2010 shootings by Professor Amy Bishop of 6 of her University of Alabama colleagues at a biology staff meeting was shocking enough. But when police began to look into Professor Bishop’s past, two other incidents came to light that could have been seen as significant warning signs that something was not right. Episode 1 Jeanne Clery In April 1986, first year student Jeanne Clery, a bubbly member of the tennis team, was brutally slain in her dorm room bed. The crime was incredibly violent and disturbing. But it did not take authorities long to find her killer, as he had confessed – and to everyone’s shock, he was also a Lehigh student. Josoph Henry told his friends he had killed a girl and stolen some of her stuff. Henry was quickly tried for the crime and sentenced to death. His sentence was eventually pleaded down to life in prison. But Jeanne’s legacy lives on, thanks to her parents. The Clerys sued Lehigh for lax security, and initiated a sweeping legislative trend that engendered a federal law named after their daughter. As a result of the Clery Act, colleges and universities that receive federal funds must be accountable for reporting crimes on their campuses, and ensuring that their students stay safe. 'The Clery Act' requires colleges and universities to report campus crime data, support victims of violence, and publicly outline the policies and procedures they have put into place to improve campus safety.
