A Doctors Mental Health and Managing Anxiety within Patients and Staff During the Pandemic

Today we wrestle with a complex, overwhelming subject and very personal material. Mental Health. More specifically, how can Physicians, Concierge Medicine Doctors and families access the right treatment and the best resources in a complex and emotionally charged field of healthcare? Our guest and good friend today is Arden O'Connor, CEO of the O'Connor Professional Group (www.oconnorpg.com). Arden founded the O'Connor Professional Group to address the needs of families and individuals struggling with an array of behavioral health issues, including addiction, mental health disorders, eating disorders, learning, and other developmental challenges. With several relatives in recovery, Arden is passionate about helping families and individuals navigate the highly fragmented treatment system in a way that creates positive outcomes and allows families to heal. Arden is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School. She remains heavily involved in community activities, as a board member of Winsor School Corporation, Collaboration for Family Flourishing, Massachusetts Association of Mental Health, and Attorneys for Family Held Enterprises. Previously, she served as a board member for the Justice Resource Institute (former chair), Harvard Club of Boston, Victory Programs, C4 Recovery Solutions and Harvard Business School Alumni Association of Boston. She maintains professional affiliations with the following organizations: Boston Estate Planning Council and Family Firm Institute. "O'Connor Professional Group is more than a business endeavor for me; it is a mission that I embarked on after my experience accessing resources for a family member in the treatment industry. My youngest brother struggled with addiction for many years, and finding the right treatment program or set of services for him was difficult, confusing, and often overwhelming. It created chaos within our family system and I knew there had to be a better way to manage the process. I founded the O'Connor Professional Group to help families like mine find high-quality resources and develop strong community-based supports, given that transitions often present challenges for individuals with behavioral health issues. With a strong team of experts, vast network of colleagues and continuum of services, we are able to tailor our approach to meet the holistic needs of clients and their support systems." Consulting Actuary at Milliman, Fritz Busch, Author of Society of Actuaries, 2020 DPC Study

The Society of Actuaries (SOA) commissioned Milliman to develop this report to provide health care stakeholders (patients, payers, policymakers and actuaries) with a comprehensive description of Direct Primary Care (DPC) as well as an objective actuarial evaluation of certain claims made about the DPC model of care. Today we sit down with one of the authors of the study, Fritz Busch, a consulting actuary at Milliman. Fritz's experience includes 27 years as an actuary and business leader in the insurance industry. Prior to starting at Milliman, he was with one of the larger Blue plans and had several consulting roles with McKinsey & Co. His commercial carrier experience includes a wide range of actuarial plan management functions that include reserving and annual statement work, trend analysis, commercial large group pricing, ACA individual and small group pricing, Medicare Supplement pricing, benefit plan design and product development. At Milliman, he has successfully worked with a variety of clients including regulators, insurance company executives, and others. He is a frequent speaker at industry and public policy meetings. Primary care is a vital and even foundational component of any health care system. Primary care physicians (PCPs) are the front line of health care and are often the entry point for patients needing care. How often a patient accesses primary care, and the quality of that care, can have significant impacts on downstream costs and patient health outcomes. However, while PCPs are almost universally acknowledged as essential to achieving the health care Triple Aim of providing high-quality care, at lower cost, with improved patient experience, many health care experts describe the current state of primary care as being in crisis. This crisis is characterized by physician burnout, large PCP patient panels, low pay for PCPs relative to other physician specialties, increased administrative burden, longer work hours without increased reimbursement, an increased risk of mental health conditions and suicide, and ultimately a PCP shortage relative to market demand. Meet Dr. Daniel Stock, founding DPC physician of PureHealth Functional Family Medicine

We sit down with Dr. Daniel Stock, the Founding Physician at PureHealth Functional Family Medicine. Dr. Stock's office is located in Noblesville, Indiana. After 18 years of being hospital-employed, Dr. Daniel Stock has opened the doors to his new functional family medicine practice. The practice is one of only two functional family medicine practices in the state of Indiana, but is the sole practice to provide care through Direct Primary Care (DPC), and without involving health insurance. As a DPC practice, PureHealth Functional Family Medicine enables patients to pay a flat, monthly fee for unlimited health care, while reserving their health insurance for specialty physician visits and hospitalizations. "I want to offer my patients all that Functional Family Medicine offers at a flat price, while also providing them care when they need it," said Dr. Daniel Stock, founding physician of PureHealth Functional Family Medicine. "The best part of functional medicine is tackling both common or acute diseases and chronic complex issues from lacerations and sore throats, to Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and even Parkinson's Disease." Despite practicing for three decades, Dr. Stock has most recently learned of an innovative way of reversing Alzheimer's Disease. He says he believes that finding out all the elements that cause a person to become ill is the best way to be able to treat a chronic disease. "Whether my patient is battling the common cold, or Alzheimer's Disease, my goal is to realize and achieve 'good healthcare,' and to that, I believe in spending more time with each patient to inform them of their options, make decisions and plan out the best, next steps" said Dr. Stock. "I firmly believe most issues can be solved by lifestyle changes if caught early enough, and in an economical way. And, DPC functional medicine allows for that to occur." Dr. Stock completed his undergraduate degree at Notre Dame University, his medical degree at Indiana University, and internship at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis. He began practicing primary care in 1989. A founding diplomate of the American Board of Clinical Lipidology, Dr. Stock is also a diplomate of the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. Meet Dr. Renee Dua, Founder, Chief Medical Officer and HEAL Telemedicine

Telemedicine has been popular for a long time and recently, we sat down with Heal's co-founder, Dr. Renee Dua to discuss the growth of her startup, HEAL. Heal is an on-demand service for doctor house calls. We talked a lot about how patients are interacting with the service, how insurance works and how technology is creating more personalized medical experiences for both Doctors and their Patients. "I created Heal after seven hours in an emergency room with my infant son," says Dr. Dua. "As a doctor and mother, I shared the frustration of anyone who's ever waited three weeks for a doctor's appointment, sat in a germ-filled waiting room, or rushed to the ER because they had no other choice. From day one, we decided three rules that we live by to this day. We had to accept insurance and keep prices affordable. Second, to fix medicine for patients, we had to fix it for doctors first. Third, to never sacrifice clinical quality for growth." 150,000 house calls in, and it seems hard to imagine a world without Heal. RESOURCES MENTIONED www.heal.com © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC.
