Humanity’s survival is at increasing risk of a global catastrophic nuclear event because the dominant strategy for preventing the use of nuclear weapons has not adapted to today’s threats. This talk with Joan Rohlfing and Carl Robichaud explores pathways to a better, safer nuclear future, one where humanity’s existence and flourishing no longer hangs in the balance, and one that relies on an effective system for managing nuclear technology into the long future – a new nuclear paradigm -- that can’t cause a civilizational catastrophe if it fails.  Finally, it makes the case for why the EA community should prioritize reducing global catastrophic nuclear risks and describes how it can contribute to safeguarding the long-term future.This talk was taken from EA Global: London 2021. William MacAskill is an Associate Professor in Philosophy at Oxford University and a senior research fellow at the Global Priorities Institute. He is also the director of the Forethought Foundation for Global Priorities Research and co-founder and President of the Centre for Effective Altruism. What career strategy should you follow if you’re aiming for impact? Holden Karnofsky recently wrote up his perspective on career choice for longtermists on the EA forum - focusing on building aptitudes. For many careers, individuals have to spend decades developing their expertise and influence. In this talk Joan claims that full time, post graduate opportunities in EA field building on university campuses may be an exception to this general principle. These opportunities provide outsized impact for individuals in their early twenties. A key concern of the effective altruism community is the risk that highly engaged community members lose interest in EA (value drift). This might be especially true for those who don’t work for EA-aligned organizations. EA workplace and professional groups might be a potential countermeasure. Promising paths for impact may be strategies to attract and retain highly engaged community members and to offer support for EA allies to continuously transition towards a high impact career.
