National Park After Dark
Audioboom Studios
Hosted by two friends who share a passion for the wilderness and a fascination with what can go wrong there, each week hosts Danielle and Cassie explore the darker side of our National Parks and explore these treasured places in a whole new way - because behind the iconic arches and towering trees lie layered histories, grisly encounters, extraordinary stories of survival, tragic ends and so much more. But it isn’t always chills and thrills. By sharing inspiring tales and their desire for protecting our planet’s wild places, they hope the show will inspire listeners to lace up their own hiking boots and take a walk into the wild to create meaningful adventures of their own.

79: People of the Parks - Kathryn Miles
In May of 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams headed to Shenandoah National Park on a backpacking trip. They were two avid outdoor women who were in love and celebrating their relationship, new jobs, and moving in together. Several days into their trip they went missing and eventually park rangers found that they had been brutally murdered. To this day the case has still not been solved and investigations have slowed down, until now.
In this episode we speak to investigative journalist Kathryn Miles. Kathryn recently published her newest book, Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. She spent the past several years personally investigating this case discovering police cover ups, negligence in their investigations, lost records, and evidence that was never properly investigated. Today, she tells us about the evidence she has found, the likelihood of this cold case being solved, and how this horrific event has rocked the outdoor community.

78: Premonition. Olympic National Park.
This month we take a trip back to Olympic National Park and get to know Jane Constantino – a young woman who lived life to the fullest. Her adventures and subsequent brushes with death led her to Washington state, all in the hopes of checking off an item on her list. Perhaps driven by an ominous premonition, Jane explored the world and experienced life while she still had time. Time, that was cut short – just as she thought it would be.

76: Buried Alive in the Australian Outback.
Join us this week as we head into the Australian Outback. In 2006 Ricky Megee was offered a job on the opposite side of the country. He accepted and packed his bags for a 55 hour road trip to begin his new adventures. When he comes across a group of men broken down on the side of the road, inside Australia's most desolate countryside, he stops to help them. These men aren't broken down though and shortly after, he wakes up buried alive hundreds of miles from any civilization, in one of the most unrelenting deserts on the planet.

75: The Bone Collector. Effigy Mounds National Monument.
National Parks, as most places do, have rules. And for good reason. It is expected as visitors that we abide by them, and it is also expected that Park Rangers not only uphold them themselves, but enforce them. But what happens when they don’t? What happens when those whose objective is to preserve, protect and enhance - turn their back on those very commitments? Today we venture to Iowa, to Effigy Mounds National Monument – a place rich with cultural history. This monument is famous for its hundreds of burial mounds and notorious for a scandal that disrupted those who were laid to rest within them.

73: An Adventure Worth Dying For. Murchison Falls National Park.
Grab your lifejacket, a paddle, and your best dry-bag because this week we're heading to different countries throughout Africa to explore some of the best whitewater rapids in the world. We follow the extraordinary life of Hendrik Coetzee, an avid outdoorsman who finds his true love and passion on the white waters. Not only are these some of the best rapids in the world, they're also some of the most dangerous, and are filled with aggressive hippos and man-eating crocodiles. During his journey he experiences extreme challenges, faces cannibalistic tribes, has huge adrenaline rushes, parties hard, and falls in love. Someone who lives life on the edge like this though - can't sustain it forever.

72: A Martyr and a Murder. Everglades National Park.
In the late 1800's feathers were a huge fashion craze, to have them on your clothing was a signal of wealth and importance. To obtain these feathers, plume hunters decimated the fragile ecosystem and wading birds of the Everglades. The devastation caused an uproar and a call for conservation efforts to be put into place. Guy Bradley happily accepted the position as Game Warden and wildlife protector of the Everglades. He believed in the cause, and was willing to give his life for it. After his murder, the world finally took notice on what he was fighting so hard to protect.
