Both the U.S. national anthem and the flag that inspired the song are major legacies of the War of 1812 when the United States and its allies fought against the United Kingdom to preserve the young country. In September of 1814, British forces attacked Fort McHenry in Baltimore and failed. Watching the battle was Francis Scott Key who was so inspired by the defense of the city and a gigantic forty foot American flag draped over the garrison that he penned the lyrics to the nation's national anthem. Part of celebrating America's independence is remembering Americans who've made the ultimate sacrifice and the families they've left behind. One of the charities meant to help them out is Folds of Honor, named for the folded American flag at military funerals. Since 2007, the nonprofit has helped the families of fallen heroes, including giving out 52,000 scholarships to Gold Star spouses and children.
