Originally introduced in 2022, the 'Kids Online Security Act' (KOSA) was cosponsored by Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) aims to create a “duty of care” which requires companies to take steps to prevent harm while using their products. In this case, social media platforms and other internet sites, would have to do a better job curbing their algorithms that end up targeting children. The bill, which past a cloture vote and now awaits final voting, has been supported by various non-profits and major tech companies but also opposed by certain groups.
