The Spiritual Implications of Parapsychology with Charles T. Tart
Charles T. Tart, PhD, is emeritus professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, as well as the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He is a past-president of the Parapsychological Association. He has published over 100 scientific papers in parapsychology. He is editor of several anthologies including Altered States of Consciousness, Transpersonal Psychologies, Mind at Large, and Body Mind Spirit: Exploring the Parapsychology of Spirituality. Books that he has authored include Psi: Scientific Studies in the Psychic Realm, States of Consciousness, The End of Materialism, Learning to Use Extrasensory Perception, On Being Stoned, Waking Up: Overcoming the Obstacles to Human Potential, and Open Mind – Discriminating Mind. His website is https://www.paradigm-sys.com/.
Here he shares his thoughts on how the scientific method can be applied to provide better answers than we currently have regarding the effectiveness of various spiritual practices for particular individuals. He notes that the data of parapsychology point us toward the realization that consciousness is capable of receiving information across time and space, independent of the limitations of the human organism. Parapsychology also provides insights into the possibility of human survival after death.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is past-vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that association for his contributions to the study of consciousness.

The History of Remote Viewing with Paul H. Smith
Paul H. Smith, PhD, has served twice as president of the International Remote Viewing Association an organization of which he is a founder. A former Army intelligence officer, he served for seven years as part of the military’s top-secret remote viewing program. He is author of Reading the Enemy’s Mind and The Essential Guide to Remote Viewing. He currently serves as president and chief trainer for Remote Viewing Instructional Services. His website is https://rviewer.com/.
Here he reviews the history of what is now known as remote viewing. He describes early experiments in free-response clairvoyance. He also explains how he was recruited into the military unit at Fort Meade, Maryland, that was developed to employ remote viewing for intelligence purposes. He describes the evolution of that unit and the subsequent development of a variety of approaches to remote perception following the close of government funding in 1995.

The Erotic and Esoteric in Religion with Jeffrey Kripal
Jeffrey John Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Philosophy and Religious Thought and former chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas. His books include Kali’s Child, Esalen, Authors of the Impossible, The Serpent’s Gift, Mutants and Mystics, The Supernatural (with Whitley Strieber), and Secret Body.
Here he describes his intellectual journey starting with the study of eroticism in religion and leading him into the study and appreciation of the esoteric or paranormal. His early research focused on homoeroticism in the life of the nineteenth century Hindu saint, Ramakrishna. In India, he experienced a profound state of consciousness associated with the goddess Kali. Later he worked with Whitley Strieber, a UFO contactee, and describes a striking correspondence between Strieber’s experience of the Visitors — and his understanding of Hindu goddesses.

Magick and Politics with Gary Lachman
Gary Lachman is the author of twenty-one books on topics ranging from the evolution of consciousness to literary suicides, popular culture and the history of the occult. He has written a rock and roll memoir of the 1970s, biographies of Aleister Crowley, Rudolf Steiner, C. G. Jung, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, Emanuel Swedenborg, P. D. Ouspensky, and Colin Wilson, histories of Hermeticism and the Western Inner Tradition, studies in existentialism and the philosophy of consciousness, and about the influence of esotericism on politics and society.
Here he describes several threads of thought linking contemporary politics to the practice of influencing world events via parapsychological influence. In particular, he focuses on a movement known as “chaos magick”. He also describes Donald Trump’s longstanding interest in the work of Norman Vincent Peale and the Power of Positive Thinking. Additionally, he describes the theoretical foundations of the philosopher Julius Evola — as well as the Eurasian ambitions of Vladimir Putin and Alexander Dugin.

Metaphysical Idealism with Bernardo Kastrup
Bernardo Kastrup, PhD, is a computer scientist. He is author of Rationalist Spirituality, Why Materialism is Baloney, Dreamed Up Reality, Meaning in Absurdity, Brief Peeks Beyond, More Than Allegory, and The Idea of the World. He has published several papers in Scientific American arguing for metaphysical idealism.
Here he explains his own nuanced brand of philosophical idealism. He distinguishes his perspective from that of the British empiricist, Bishop George Berkeley, and notes that he draws inspiration from the German idealist, Arthur Schopenhauer. He claims that the logical contradictions ensuing from materialism can all be resolved. He also describes a series of findings in different areas of brain science that he finds consistent with an idealistic perspective.

Mind and Matter with Russell Targ
Russell Targ, a laser physicist, cofounded the remote viewing research program at SRI International. He is coauthor of Mind Reach, The Mind Race, Miracles of Mind, The Heart of the Mind, and The End of Suffering. He is author of Limitless Mind and The Reality of ESP: A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities. He is also coeditor of the anthology, Mind At Large.
Here he shares his personal involvement with Advaita Vedanta, a philosophy that maintains that there are no divisions. He reviews the impact of logical positivism and describes himself as a former positivist. Then he describes several examples of parapsychological phenomena he has observed. The implications of such observations is that mind or consciousness is efficacious in the world. He relates two personal stories suggesting survival of consciousness after death.

History of Ideas About The Paranormal with Terje Simonsen
Terje Simonsen, PhD, is the author of Our Secret Powers — Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Precognition — A Short History of (Nearly) Everything Paranormal. He is a philosopher and historian of ideas.
Here he reflects on ideas about the paranormal going back to ancient times. Topics include shamanism, Hermeticism, idealism, naturalism, materialism, and skepticism. He notes that, while there is nearly 150 years of scientific research in parapsychology, the field is still marginalized within academia. He also discusses the responses to the paranormal within the field of theoretical physics. He focuses on the practical applications of psi, and on the personal meaning of psi abilities.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. The Gnostics with Jason Reza Jorjani
Jason Reza Jorjani, PhD, is a philosopher and author of Prometheus and Atlas, World State of Emergency, Lovers of Sophia, and Novel Folklore: The Blind Owl of Sadegh Hedayat.
Here he points out that, while the term Gnosticism is very popular, few people really understand what it means. While it is a very loose religious movement, it does have certain common elements. Among these are the idea that our world is under the sway of a malevolent deity who is served by powers and principalities. He traces Gnostic movements such as Manicheism, Mazdakism, and the Cathars. He also discusses the rebirth of Gnosticism in our age, due to the rediscovery of the Nag Hammadi library.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness exploration.

The Psychic Seventies with Saul-Paul Sirag
Saul-Paul Sirag is author of ADEX Theory: How the ADE Coxeter Graphs Unify Mathematics and Physics. He is also author of an Appendix titled “Consciousness: A Hyperspace View” that was published in the 1993 edition of Jeffrey Mishlove’s book, The Roots of Consciousness.
Here he and Jeff reflect on their time together almost a half-century ago. Their memories include time exploring UFO phenomena, interacting with the famous Israeli psychic, Uri Geller, and living at the Institute for the Study of Consciousness in Berkeley, California. It was also a time of great ferment in the world of physics at Berkeley. Both Saul-Paul (mostly) and Jeff (slightly) were written about in historian of science David Kaiser’s book How the Hippies Saved Physics. The conversation also focuses on Jungian synchronicities.
