MES Research Talk - Dr. S. M. Ali, “Possibilities for Human-Centric U.S.-China Collaboration in Pakistan”
This lecture is part of the AY23 Middle East Studies (MES) Research Talks series.
The implications of great power competition are increasingly apparent across South Asia, especially within the Indian Subcontinent where the two largest nuclear armed nations in South Asia, Pakistan and India, are locked in a protracted rivalry. Rather than primarily relying on India’s simultaneous ability to engage in adversarial competition with China and to wean smaller South Asian states away from Chinese influence, the U.S. needs to invest in alternative strategies to contend with the growing Chinese footprint in South Asia. The U.S. is well placed to leverage its long-standing relationship with Pakistan to explore opportunities to promote human-centric security goals which are in the national interests of both the global powers and which can also have a positive impact on much needed regional stabilization within South Asia.
Dr. S. M. Ali is a Non-Resident Scholar at the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C. He has a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Melbourne. He has extensive on the ground experience working on development issues with government and non-government organizations. He teaches courses on South Asian security, human security, and different research methods at American University, Georgetown University, and Johns Hopkins University. He has previously taught courses on the same subjects at George Washington University, George Mason University, and in universities in Australia and Pakistan.

LtCol Brian Kerg & Maj Tyler Quinn, “Mental Agility: The Value of Realistic Open-Source #Wargaming”
The #BruteCast audience knows that we’ve had several episodes this year in which we asked the question: What will the next fight look like, and what changes must be made to compete and win? In the context of the institutional restructuring undertaken through Force Design 2030, these are important questions. Today, we look at the problem through the lens of another topic we’ve often focused on, and that is wargaming. In May 2022, the students of the School of Advanced Warfighting at Marine Corps University looked at the hard choices an institution must make to design a force capable of outperforming a committed adversary, and tested these choices in a series of open-source wargames; and recently, the US Naval Institute’s Proceedings journal published three articles that highlighted these games. LtCol Brian Kerg and Maj Tyler Quinn, both part of the student cadre that ran these games as well as contributors to the articles, are here today to talk about what they learned and how those lessons apply to the challenges that Force Design 2030 is trying to face.
The articles which our guests reference in this presentation can be found below:
The 'Agile' Wargames that Can Test Force Design, Part 1 (https://www.usni.org/magazines/proceedings/2022/november/agile-wargames-can-test-force-design-part-1)
