Developing Global Building Standards for Tiny Homes: Tiny House Alliance USA on the ASTM Opportunity

Janet and I have been talking for a while and we've decided that it's finally time to pull back the curtain on the efforts that she has been working on for the last several months and do an interview on the Tiny House Lifestyle Podcast. Janet is the Founder, President, and Treasurer of Tiny House Alliance USA and is currently leading an exploratory initiative to develop new global building standards with ASTM. Before your eyes glaze over, I encourage you to stick with this show because Janet does a great job of explaining what ASTM International is, what standards are, how they would impact the tiny house building industry, dwellers, DIYers, not just in the United States or North America, but in the entire world. It's a really exciting effort. I think there's a lot of potential here and we need more people to get involved. We need advocates and stakeholders to join the process and I'm excited about it!Full show notes and images at thetinyhouse.net/181In This Episode:What is ASTM and what do they do?Codes vs Standards and their effects on everythingHow ASTM works and who is involvedThe stakeholders that are involved in the global building standards effortMaking sure that codes and standards don't conflictThe ICC and their relationship with tiny homesCould tiny houses and cannabis have some things in common?About Janet's tiny home villageThis Week's Sponsor: Tiny House DecisionsTiny House Decisions is the guide that I wish I had when I was building my tiny house. Tiny Houses for Veterans with Veteran's Community Project

I love finding out about new ways that tiny homes are being used to help people that are in need and the Veterans Community Project is an incredibly impressive organization that has accomplished a ton in just a few short years, including 49 tiny homes for veterans on a piece of property that they now own! Vincent Morales has been there from the start and together we go through the organization's history, what they do, how they settled on tiny houses, and how everything works with the Veterans Community Project. How to Convert a Shed to a Tiny Home

Katy Zientek's tiny house caught my eye, when I learned that it was actually a shed that was converted into a tiny house. I have a very popular blog post about how to convert a shed to a tiny house, but I have never interviewed someone on the show who actually did it. Enter Katie, Katie and her husband took a shed that was built in the 1980s on their grandparents property, and turned it into a gorgeous Pinterest worthy tiny house. In this conversation, we go through all the basics, like how they did the floors, what they had to do to the walls, the ceilings, why they chose to add a porch, and all of the details that went into converting a shed into a tiny house. I Always Wanted to Build a Tiny House

As I record this today, I just got back from a week-long bicycle tour with my cousin on the coast of Maine and in a couple of days, I'm heading down to the New Jersey shore to spend a week with aunts, uncles, and cousins. Instead of bringing you a show where I interview someone, I thought it would be interesting to share a show that I was a guest on where somebody interviews me. Enter Liz Sumner and the I Always Wanted To Podcast. The I Always Wanted To Podcast is a podcast for people who long to break out of their comfort zone and try something bold but need some encouragement. Liz interviews people who are doing things (or teaching things) that others long to do. I was a guest on the show back in June and I really enjoyed being interviewed by Liz Sumner. I think you'll enjoy it, too! Designing Beyond Right Now

The first time I met Sean he was sketching tiny houses in a sketchbook at a speaker dinner after a tiny house conference. I'm so glad to have him on the podcast all these years later. Sean is an active member of Tiny House Engage, my online community, where he does monthly design reviews of various members' tiny house designs and he is a professional architect. In this interview, we talk about Sean's design philosophies and the tiny home he designed and is almost finished building. We also cover how to build affordably in 2021 and beyond, as well as some of the ways that tiny houses can go wrong. Are All Tiny House Dwellers Multipotentialites?

Have you ever struggled to figure out what you want to be when you grow up? Or maybe you're already grown up and you still balance multiple interests and don't feel like you can just fit into one box. Today's guest, Emilie Wapnick, has created a whole set of resources just for people like that - people like you and like me - and I actually have a hunch that there are a lot of us among tiny house dwellers. The word that Emilie uses is "multipotentialite" and in this conversation we're going to talk about what a multipotentialite is and what our unique needs are when it comes to finding work and feeling fulfilled in our pursuits, whether it's work, creativity, or more. It's a really interesting conversation and I think you'll learn some things about yourself and about how you can apply some tips and techniques to planning and building a tiny house.
