Hi students! Today I want to talk about an invention. There have been some great inventions. Almost everything was an invention at one time, like the telephone and the car and the airplane. 今天我們來聊聊發明。世界上有很多大發明，像是電話、汽車，還有飛機。 Most inventions are made by adults. But today, I want to talk about a cool invention made by some kids in Canada. Their names are Liam and Fraser. 很多東西都是大人發明的，但是今天我要講兩個加拿大的小孩發明家，叫做 Liam 跟 Fraser。 One day, Liam was taking sailing lessons and fell into the sea. Luckily, he was wearing a life-jacket. He was safe because of the life jacket, but Liam was really cold in the water. Liam 在帆船課的時候掉進海裡，幸好他有穿救生衣，但是水裡好冷！ That freezing cold water gave Liam a great idea. He worked with his friend Fraser on an invention. What was their invention? They invented a heated life jacket. 這給了 Liam 一個好點子，他跟他的朋友 Fraser 發明了一個發熱救生衣。 They put a special chemical in the life jacket. When the chemical touches water, it gets hot. 救生衣裡面有化學物質，碰到水就會加熱。 To test their new life jacket, they jumped into the ocean. But they used too much of the chemical the first time, so they got a bit too hot. 為了測試他們的發明，他們跳進海裡面，結果因為化學物質太多，衣服變得太燙了。 So, now they don't use as much of the chemical in their life jackets. And they won a science award for their great invention! 他們減少了化學物質的用量，後來贏得了一個發明獎！ Maybe some of you smart kids will invent something great, too! Hi everyone! You guys know that pollution is a big problem around the world, right? It's in the air. It's on land, and it's in the water. That's bad! 環境污染到處都是，空氣、土地、河流都會被污染，很糟糕！ But, there is also some good news. Many people are working hard to clean up the environment. In England, scientists are helping to make a river called the River Mersey much cleaner. 但也有人努力清理環境。英國的科學家想讓一條叫做梅西河的河流變乾淨。 That river was famous for being one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. Scientists even said the river was "dead", because it had so much pollution. 梅西河是全歐洲最骯髒的河流之一，科學家甚至說這條河流已經死了。 Why was the River Mersey so polluted? For a long time, factories put dangerous chemicals into the River Mersey. 為什麼它污染這麼嚴重呢？因為工廠一直把廢棄化學物排進河裡。 Also, the river had a lot of sewage. So, it smelled really, really bad. People like to visit a mountain temple because it is peaceful. But to reach that place, they need to climb the mountain first. There's a big party in Brazil this week! Called the Rio Carnival. It happens every year, in a city called Rio de Janeiro. 里約嘉年華來了！它每年會在里約熱內盧這個城市舉辦。 The biggest dance in Brazil is the samba. So, at the Rio Carnival, everyone is samba dancing! 巴西最熱門的舞蹈是森巴舞，嘉年華的時候大家都在跳森巴！ Samba is all about the lower body. The legs move really fast, while the upper body stays still. Soccer, or "football", is the same. It's mostly played with the feet. Hi, students! Have you ever heard of the phrase, "busy as a bee?" If someone is "busy as a bee", it means he or she is really busy. 你們有聽過「跟蜜蜂一樣忙」這種講法嗎？意思是這個人非常忙。 Bees are busy insects. They go to many flowers and collect pollen. That's good for flowers. Bees also build hives. The hives are their homes. And, of course, bees make honey. Today is Valentine's Day! A day for love. Some people love chocolate, they want to eat it all the time! Some people love their pets… but they don't want to eat them! 愛有很多種，有人愛巧克力，有人愛寵物。 Some people love helping others. A great way to do that is to donate. That means giving your stuff away for free. 還有人愛幫助別人。這些人會去捐東西。 Charity shops are where you can donate your stuff. Today is World Radio Day! The first radios were made over 100 years ago! 今天是世界收音機日！世界上第一個收音機出現在一百多年前！ Radios meant that, for the first time, people could sit in their homes and listen to someone talk miles away. We're used to it now with TV and the internet, but at the time it was all cool and new! 有收音機代表大家可以坐在家，就可以聽到遠方的人們在講話，這在當時是很新奇的發明。 In the old days radio shows were kept on "tapes": long, thin lines of plastic. When they broke, the shows were gone forever. We can hear all about what they liked, where they went… all kinds of things! Happy New Year everyone! Next week will be the start of the Year of the Rabbit! 新年快樂！下星期就是兔年的開始。 Last year was the Year of the Tiger. Tigers are big, strong and brave! Rabbits are small, cute and fluffy! 老虎高大強壯而勇敢，兔子則嬌小可愛，還毛茸茸的。 In old Chinese stories, the tiger was the king of all the animals! So, in the Year of the Tiger, people are really brave! They make big choices in their lives.
