Retirement is more than golf, gardening and travel. Once someone finishes work, they enter a new phase of life. Philip Hayes (EV Church, Erina), a retired eye surgeon, thought about what would happen if we used this as a great opportunity for the gospel. The timeline for some people is that they meet their spouse, get married, and prepare to have kids. (It's not everyone and we love people who are single or kids is not an option for them!). The gospel reminds us that we are sinners, but also broken and fragile people. As people come to church they come with their various mental health issues. Keith and Sarah Condie discuss what is the role of the church in helping people. It is not our job to fix people. Church can be really good for people as they deal with the issues. The importance of watching and listening to people who might need help. Doing something is better than doing nothing. Don't be afraid to ask "Are you thinking of taking your life?" Good questions can be "Are you OK?", "What has helped in the past?", "Can I pray for you?" Encouraging healthy habits can be underestimated. Care for yourself while you are caring for others. What should we think about the 4th term? 1. Mission: Dust your mission calendar off. For summer it can be a big mission season, for others it is the slow season. For those who are prepping for that big mission, now is the time to get things going. Really important to have a next step for what will happen for people coming to Christmas NB Your mission calendar is where you mission funnel drives your diary.   2. Leadership: this is all about a season of transition.  Onboarding new leaders or training leaders. Talking with leaders and honouring those who are stepping off or those who have done a great job. Celebrating the team, give thanks to God for the things that he has done. 3. Christmas: This is a great place for people to create connections with people in the community but make sure you know what the next step is but you need to think about what is best for you. 4. Summer: On one hand you will get visitors but things will slow down and you will need to keep some momentum. You need to acknowledge with people this is a different season. 5. Rest: Gospel workers should try and be refreshed as you come into the Christmas/ summer season. Public bible reading is something people often take for granted. But hearing God speak to our community is the highlight of our church gatherings. How do we practically speaking, read the bible well?  Backyard Bard, Simon Camilleri gives us some pointers: Historically, when the people of God stop reading the bible, they go off the tracks.  The sermon is not just the ministry of the word and the bible reading is not the tick box at the start. When people expect less from the bible reading, the harder it is for the preacher. Like practising music, the bible reading is something that takes work and needs feedback.   The keys to a good bible reading is clarity done through how you read.
