"From the 1940s until the late 1980s, the majority view within the Labour Party was against joining (and, then, in favour of leaving) the European Economic Communities", later known as the European Union. Yet by the 2016 Brexit referendum, among Labour members, supporters and most MPs, Euroscepticism had become a byword for imperial nostalgia and racism.
