I was driven to ask myself in all seriousness: “What is the myth you are living?”I found no answer to this question, and had to admit that I was not living with a myth, or even in a myth, but rather in an uncertain cloud of theoretical possibilities which I was beginning to regard with increasing distrust. I did not know that I was living a myth, and even if I had known it, I would not have known what sort of myth was ordering my life without my knowledge. So, in the most natural way, I took it upon myself to get to know “my” myth, and I regarded this as the task of tasks…” — C.G. The Warrior as a Cultural and Psychological Necessity | Dylan Francisco PhD | HITW 181

Make a one-time contribution to http://paypal.me/brianjamessoul“The self-confidence of the warrior is not the self-confidence of the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlooker and calls that self-confidence. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and calls that humbleness.”― Carlos CastanedaThe world is increasingly at war—literally and metaphorically. To cope, many seek personal methods of gaining peace—through meditation, yoga, time in nature, exercise, even therapy. But these methods are often utilized to escape difficult emotions like fear and anger. Even developing emotional intelligence can be motivated by a desire to think about emotions rather than feel them. Because the world is engulfed by fear and anger, conscientious people are doing everything possible to eliminate them, which is not helping because it just enacts another kind of war. We are caught between the guru and the soldier and paradoxically enough, both must often kill their emotions to complete their mission, which can leave behind a trail of massacred lives in one form or another. We are suffering from the cultural and psychological absence of the Warrior. Indigenous cultures have always recognized the importance of the Warrior for the human community because the Warrior is experientially trained to honor fear and anger. Without the Warrior we lose what fear and anger can teach us. When we oppose these emotions, we put ourselves in conflict with the psyche itself and no one at war with themselves can live peacefully with others or the earth.DYLAN FRANCISCO, PhD, is co-chair and a core faculty member of the Jungian and Archetypal Studies MA/PhD program at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California. Dylan grounds his teaching in the depth psychology of C. G. Jung, decolonialism, and Mestizo/Mexican/Indigenous traditions that provide a primordial, holistic, and sacred worldview within which to understand the psyche, to embody its wholeness individually, and to live it relationally through honoring Spirit, the ancestors, and the land. Poetic Faiths embody soulful practice through ritual participation in mythopoetic art; they are ways of taking as profound that which may not be taken literally.Volume I includes:Aretéanism – a ritualistic path toward personal and communal excellence, inspired by ancient Greek philosophyCREATION – a queer, science-fiction-infused religious response to climate change, mourning the AnthropoceneThe First Church of David Bowie, Phonomancer – a psychedelic blend of role-playing, music and personal developmentThe Orphan Wisdom School – a redemptive practice rooted in knowing history, being claimed by ancestry and working for a time that we won’t live to seeThe Mysterium – an immersive experience of Deep Play guided by 'memento mori ergo carpe diem'—remember death, therefore seize the dayWith a foreword by Professor Carole Cusack and the provocative Cultpunk Manifesto, this collection explores the dynamic intersection of ceremony, art and philosophy in the search for metamodern meaning.Book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DV92J27NBlog: https://cultpunk.artTags: Howl in the Wilderness Brian James #podcast #brianjames #hitw #psychology #depthpsychology #spirituality #religion #philosophy Hosted on Acast. Faith Without Belief: Searching For Meaning In A Secular Age | Abi Millar | HITW 176
Howling about faith, belief and the quest for meaning in the modern world with journalist and author Abi Millar.Hosted by depth counselor, writer and cultural activist Brian James: http://brianjames.caCheck out my new book Traumadelic: Re-Visioning Psychedelic Therapy http://traumadelicbook.comIf you’d like to gain access to early release of full, ad-free episodes and support the podcast, consider becoming part of the pack over at patreon.com/howlinthewilderness. Make a one-time contribution to http://paypal.me/brianjamessoulAbi Millar is the author of The Spirituality Gap: Searching for Meaning in a Secular Age. A journalist living in London, she has long gravitated towards subjects with a scientific bent. But she is also a yoga teacher, psychedelics aficionado and tarot enthusiast, who is fascinated by the intersection of spirituality and critical thinking.Abi grew up in an evangelical church, but after losing her faith, she found herself searching for spirituality elsewhere. Torn between the logical part of her brain and the part that secretly believes in magic, she wondered whether her crisis of faith was part of a larger story: at a time when more and more people in the Western world are moving away from organised religion, what does spirituality look like?In The Spirituality Gap, she tries out 12 different practices ranging from ayahuasca to astrology, reiki to raves. Throughout, she asks how can we embrace ritual in our own lives even if we are wary of religion? And how can secular Westerners channel our spiritual impulses while avoiding the traps of pseudoscience or cultural appropriation?Check out Abi's work: https://linktr.ee/abimillarwritesTags: #psychedelic #therapy #psychology #spirituality Brian James Howl in the Wilderness Hosted on Acast.
